Against Brentford, I was delighted with the 07
commitment, attention and intensity of the
players. We had chances to improve the score
but we were strong against a dangerous side,
and that was important.

When Norwich came here on Sunday, it would
have been easy to look at the table and take our
foot off the pedal against a team at the bottom.
We didn’t do that, however.

The players were professional, showed an
excellent mentality and scored three really good
goals.

There are always things to improve on but the
players have shown they want to work, learn and
fight for Tottenham, which means we are moving
in the right direction.

Our focus now turns to the Europa
Conference League and our final Group G fixture
tonight. I should like to welcome Bruno Genesio,

A
MOLTO
BENE!

As he looks forward to his first
Christmas in north London,
PIERLUIGI GOLLINI reflects on
his start to life as a Spur and
discusses the impact of the recent
appointments of his fellow Italians,
Head Coach Antonio Conte and
Goalkeeper Coach Marco Savorani.

By Liam Carson

D espite having only been with us since
July, Pierluigi Gollini admits that,
having settled so well in north London,
he feels like he has been with us for years.

A loan signing joining from Serie A side
Atalanta this summer, the goalkeeper swapped
Italy for England looking to challenge himself
and, in his own words, show that he can be ‘the
future of Tottenham’.

Of course, he came in knowing that he faced
an uphill battle for opportunities in our starting
XI with the number one jersey firmly in the hands
of our captain and World Cup winner Hugo Lloris.
Yet, while his chances in a Spurs shirt have been
somewhat limited so far, it has been an impor-
tant learning experience for the ambitious and
enthusiastic Italian.

A star of our pre-season games, especially on
his first appearance in our Mind Series clash with
Chelsea at Stamford Bridge where he produced
a commanding performance and a number
of top-drawer saves, he then delivered once
more as a second-half substitute in the same
competition four days later as we got the better
of Arsenal.

THFC is very important.

“It’s quite similar to how it is at Atalanta, that’s
why I like it – I find it quite familiar. In England,
I think it can be difficult to find a situation like
this. In Italy, the clubs are more like families.
Sometimes here it can be more like a job. So, I like
it here because of the atmosphere that I found
here, with this team and club.”

Having settled in with such ease, the
goalkeeper has made no secret of his desire to
learn and develop during his time with us – and

17

Pierluigi Gollini THFC
it is clear, with the staff and team-mates he has
around him, he will only grow.

In his first interview with the Club, as he put
pen to paper on his season-long loan, Pierluigi
remarked on the career and stature of his fellow
shot-stopper, our captain and record Premier
League appearance maker, Lloris. Stressing his
huge respect for our number one, the Italian
described it as a ‘privilege and honour to work
and train with him’ and someone he was keen to
learn from.

Add to that the appointments of his compatri-
ots Antonio Conte as our Head Coach and Marco
Savorani as our Goalkeeper Coach, our number
22 feels, under the tutelage of the renowned
coaches, he has even more to gain as he looks to
continue to develop and progress in N17.

“I LIKE IT HERE
BECAUSE
OF THE

ATMOSPHERE
THAT I FOUND
HERE, WITH

THIS TEAM
AND CLUB”

“Hugo’s very good. He helps me to improve
and, maybe for him, it’s good to have a young
guy like me that is always pushing him,” he began,
discussing our skipper as he described the
impact of the trio. “We push each other in the
same way. For me, he is obviously a great exam-
ple, and he is a guy I can learn a lot of things from.
He is very good and I try to take from him all the
lessons and things that can be helpful to me.

“For Marco, it is the first time that he has
coached and trained in England, so you have to
understand that it will be a little bit different
for him, especially in terms of what the league
requires – the Premier League is different
to Serie A. So, for certain things, there are
differences and he will have to adapt and learn
but I’m really happy to work with him because he
is a top goalkeeper coach. He really cares about
technique and is very focussed on every little
detail, which is very good. Against the opposition,
small details can make a big difference, so it is a
great opportunity for me to work with him.

“And, obviously with Antonio, I knew a bit
18

THFC Pierluigi Gollini
about him before he arrived through friends
in the national team. His impact here so far
has been very good. He is one of the few top
managers in the world so it is great that we
can work with him. I like the mentality that he is
bringing and obviously he is trying to give us his
culture, his footballing philosophy and everybody
has been very open to his work and methods.
The whole team had to do better, work harder
and everyone has embraced the culture and
the changes that he has brought. And it’s good
because we’re all pushing in the same direction
and that is the most important thing to achieving
results.”

“IT’S GOOD
BECAUSE
WE’RE ALL
PUSHING IN
THE SAME
DIRECTION”

With 10 games facing us across 31 days
between the start of December and New Year’s
Day, results during this festive period will
undoubtedly have a huge impact on the course of
our season. A time for teams to build momentum
ahead of the second half of the campaign, the
hectic schedule at Christmas is something which
is unique to English football, with most other
nations, such as Pierluigi’s homeland of Italy,
opting for a slight break to fixtures in the winter.

For many players, the first time they encoun-
ter this time of year here can be quite the shock
to the system. For Gollini though, who got his
first taste of our festive period during his 2016/17
loan spell with Aston Villa, he admits Christmas
in English football remains a very unusual expe-
rience for him.

“For me, it is a little bit strange to play in
the Christmas period because, in Italy, (the
celebration) it is a cultural thing – everybody
stops. It is not the time to think about football
or work, it is just time to spend with your family
and be grateful – it is just a different culture,” he
explained.

“Here, some people are looking forward to
Christmas for the Boxing Day match and so it
is just different. For me, it is a bit strange to be
training and playing in the Christmas period.
Every country has its culture though, so it will be
a good experience for me.”

scorching drive before he converted a penalty after
Dennis Bond had been brought down. In the 54th
minute, Lyon pulled a goal back from Fleury Di Nallo
but a minute later, a typically brave Jones dived in to
score the goal pictured.

Our French visitors responded again through
Angel Rambert to make it 3-2 on the night and
give them the advantage on away goals, but with
20 minutes left Alan Gilzean scored our fourth
and we were heading through 4-3 on aggregate.
Unfortunately though, in the 80th minute, Mohamed
Bouassa converted a cross past Pat Jennings to
make it advantage Lyon once more and this time we
were unable to reply, exiting on away goals after a
4-4 aggregate draw.
