Spurs v Man City

Spurs v Man City FA Cup 23/24

THFC CITY IN THE CUP 5 1 After a sixth round defeat against City at Maine Road on 1 March 1969 – Francis Lee with the only goal of the game – our next meetings were the most significant of our 14 clashes to date, coming in the 100th FA Cup Final of 1981. In front of a sold out crowd of 100,000 at Wembley Stadium on 5 May 1981, we played out a fairly drab 1-1 draw in which Tommy Hutchinson – the oldest player on the pitch at 33 – put City ahead after half an hour only to then deflect a Glenn Hoddle free-kick into his own net with 11 minutes left. One of the most poignant moments of the game was seeing Ricky Villa trudge around the pitch after being subbed off in the 68th minute following a disappointing performance from our Argentine midfielder. Redemption was to come around quickly for Villa though. In the replay back at Wembley four days later, he slalomed his way through the Manchester City defence to score one of the finest FA Cup Final goals of all time and one voted Wembley Stadium’s ‘Goal of the Century’. Not only that, but it won us the trophy for the seventh time in our history. Villa had put us ahead early on after great work from compatriot Ossie Ardiles before City levelled soon after thanks to a truly wonderful volley from Steve Mackenzie. They then took the lead five minutes into the second half when Chris Hughton and Paul Miller combined to bring down Dave Bennett and Kevin Reeves converted the penalty past Milija Aleksic. We’d never lost an FA Cup Final at this stage and ensured that run continued with two goals in six minutes to turn the game in our favour. First, Garth Crooks made it 2-2 in the 70th minute before Villa took centre stage, weaving his way past three City defenders and rolling the ball into the net beneath Joe Corrigan, sparking wild scenes of celebration among Spurs players and fans alike. We held on for the win and captain Steve Perryman climbed the famous Wembley steps to lift the trophy aloft. Twelve years later, we headed to Maine Road for a sixth round fixture and enjoyed a 4-2 win in another thriller. Star of the show was attacking midfielder Nayim, who scored a hat-trick as we booked our place in the semi-finals. Mike Sheron put the home side ahead in the 10th minute, but we took total control after that with four goals as Nayim levelled, Steve Sedgley put us ahead just before half-time and Nayim netted twice more in the 48th and 85th minutes. City scored a late consolation through Terry Phelan. Our most recent FA Cup encounter came at the same fourth round stage 20 years ago. After a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium, in which Nicolas Anelka scored for City and Gary Doherty equalised, the dramatic replay at White Hart Lane saw us go 3-0 ahead only to lose 4-3. This game is explored in more detail on pages 43-45 of tonight’s programme. GLENN HODDLE SHIELDS THE BALL DURING THE 1981 FINAL AT WEMBLEY

THFC THE SPURS SHIRT 5 7 FA CUP FINAL REPLAY 1981 A new edition of The Spurs Shirt book, which chronicles the history of the iconic Tottenham Hotspur jersey, is now on sale in the Spurs Shop. This highly-acclaimed official publication tells the club’s story through an incredible collection of historic match worn jerseys and this new, fully revised and updated edition, includes arguably the greatest Spurs shirt of them all. Worn by Ricky Villa as he went on his famous mazy run through the Manchester City defence during the 1981 FA Cup final replay before slotting the ball under keeper Joe Corrigan to score the greatest-ever Wembley cup final goal, this shirt is perhaps the most famous Tottenham Hotspur jersey of them all. Villa had been extremely disappointed with his performance in the first game, miserably trudging round the Wembley pitch in his unfamiliar No 6 shirt after being substituted in the second half. Traditionally, and throughout that season, Steve Perryman had worn No 6, but for the 1981 occasion he led the team out in an unfamiliar No 5 jersey. “It was all because of a mistake in the programme,” explains Perryman. “When we got to Wembley, kit man Johnny Wallis pointed out that I was listed as No 5, which was usually Ricky Villa’s number, with Ricky at No 6, which was mine. I had a quick chat with Ricky and as captain, I made the decision that we’d go with what was in the programme. “After things didn’t go right in the first game, especially for Ricky, I decided that for the replay we’d go back  to our usual numbers even though the programme still had me listed at 5 and him at 6.” However, the actual shirts they wore for the dramatic 3-2 victory – one of the most famous Spurs nights of them all – were not the same ones they’d worn in the first match. Those had been gathered up by Wallis after the game and sent straight back to White Hart Lane to be washed and prepared for the replay, scheduled for five days later. But when laundry lady Sylvie Webb removed them from the wash the following day she noticed straight away there was a  problem – the new-style ‘shadow block’ Le Coq Sportif numbers, which had been introduced for the final, had spoiled. “They were damaged – cracked and badly faded in places,” she remembered. “There’s no way a Spurs team could have run out at Wembley in them.” Webb alerted Keith Burkinshaw to the issue and the Spurs manager immediately phoned  Le Coq Sportif head Robbie Brightwell, who was preparing to go on holiday. Brightwell arranged for two new sets of FA Cup final shirts to be produced before the Thursday replay – this time with the cloth stich-applied numbers that had been worn all season up to the final. And the rest, as they say, is history… THE STORY OF THE SHIRT The Spurs Shirt: The Official History of the Tottenham Hotspur Jersey is available now from The Spurs Shop, price £40.

THFC WATC H YO U R L A N G UAG E 5 9 In a new series in this season’s matchday programme, we speak to a Spurs player either past or present to find out about the languages they speak and how that translates onto the pitch. In focus tonight, left-back RYAN SESSEGNON… NAME: RYAN SESSEGNON AGE: 23 BORN: ROEHAMPTON, ENGLAND LANGUAGES SPOKEN: FRENCH, ENGLISH How and why did you learn your languages? “Obviously I was born in this country but French is my first language. My mum and dad come from Ivory Coast where they had a French-speaking background, so naturally it comes from them. “I learned English from an early age at school – I think I’d have been in the reception class when I started learning, so maybe four or five years old, but from when I was born until the time I started to learn English in school, my parents only spoke to me in French. “It’s a language that has always been quite familiar to me – I’m fortunate to be able to speak both French and English. It’s not something that I use very much now in football – it’s just mainly English – but it can be very useful.” Which other language do you wish you could speak? “I’d probably say Spanish. I didn’t really manage to get much of a grasp on German when I played for Hoffenheim as I wasn’t there for too long, but if I had to pick Watch your language LEFT-BACK: ARRIERE GAUCHE DEFENDER: DEFENSEUR WINGER: AILIER SUBSTITUTE: REMPLACANT STADIUM: STADE HOME KIT: KIT A DOMICILE REFEREE: ARBITRE TACKLE: TACLER FOOTBALL PHRASES IN FRENCH another language now, I’d say Spanish.” How does French differ from English when you’re on the pitch in a game? “There’s not much of a difference, really. I use English on the pitch now, of course, but I guess if you’re playing and communicating in French during a game, you might hear something like ‘sa vient’, which means something like ‘the pressure is coming’. It’s like the French version of ‘man on’ when someone gives you the shout that an opponent is closing you down.” WITH RYA N S E S S E G N O N

For me he is a fantastic sportsman and I am curious about his mentality, I would like to learn something from him. WHO IS THE MOST SKILFUL IN THE TEAM? Maybe Yves Bissouma. Sometimes he does control and skills with the ball that makes people just go ‘wow’! WHO DO YOU MESSAGE MOST ON WHATSAPP – APART FROM YOUR GIRLFRIEND/WIFE? It’s probably a group of friends of mine from back home. We try to stay in touch every day and speak about everything - football, life, work. W O R D S B Y J O N R AY N E R GETTING TO KNOW... Guglielmo Vicario Continuing our new feature as we find out a little bit more about our players. Answering our questions in this evening’s programme is Italian goalkeeper GUGLIELMO VICARIO… WHO MAKES YOU LAUGH? Madders! He is always telling jokes and making people laugh in the dressing room, he’s a funny guy. WHERE WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? I grew up in Italy, in Udine – that’s my hometown. I love it very much, all my family and my friends are still there and I try to go back as often as I can, although it’s been a while now. WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT? My favourite is in London. I love Italian cuisine of course and there is an old school Italian-style restaurant called Cipriani in central London where the food is amazing, definitely my favourite. MAURICIO POCHETTINO GAVE OLIVER HIS CHANCE JAMES MADDISON

7 0 G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . THFC WHERE DO YOU PREFER TO GO – BEACH OR CITY? I definitely prefer the beach, whenever I have the opportunity to go away I try to go to the beach. It’s always a nice place to go and relax. HOW HOW DO YOU SPEND ANY FREE TIME THAT YOU GET? I like to just stay with my family, maybe sometimes we’ll go for a walk or maybe just stay at home and relax, talk about life and football, whatever we feel like. HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR EGGS IN THE MORNING? I like eggs although I don’t have them every day. And when I do have eggs, I like to change how I have them – sometimes boiled or poached, sometimes I’ll have an omelette. It depends how I feel! HOW MANY PETS DO YOU HAVE? I used to have a dog called Poppy – a setter – but at the moment I don’t have any pets. WHAT WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ICE CREAM FLAVOUR? It’s just vanilla for me! WHAT WAS THE FIRST FOOTBALL SHIRT YOU OWNED? I think in about 2001, my mum came over to the UK and she bought me a David Beckham England shirt, I think that was my first one. I was about four or five and always playing football at that time so when she came over here, she decided to bring me back one of those. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TV SERIES OF ALL-TIME? I really enjoyed the drama Suburra, an Italian TV series which was all about the society and complexity of the city of Rome. It covered every aspect of the city such as politics, economics etc, very interesting. FORMER ENGLAND CAPTAIN DAVID BECKHAM “I grew up in Italy, in Udine – that’s my hometown. I love it very much”

THFC G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . 7 1 WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR SPURS DEBUT? A lot of emotions and feelings all rolled in together. It was a day I will never forget, I was a bit nervous as it was my first game with a new team and you have to adapt to a new situation. It was a good day, we didn’t win even though we probably deserved it but it was my first game and I will always remember it. WHEN WHEN DID YOU LAST COOK AND WHAT WAS IT? I am not very good at all at cooking so I don’t cook very often. I think maybe the last time was something simple like a chicken breast with some vegetables on the side. WHEN DID YOU LAST GET YOUR HAIRCUT? Just three days ago, I always get my haircut once a week. WHEN DID YOU LAST VISIT YOUR HOME TOWN? It was last July when I left there to come to London, I haven’t been back since yet. We have a lot of games, we’re always busy so I haven’t had the opportunity to go back and visit since then. WHEN DID YOU LAST GO TO THE CINEMA? A long, long time ago. I don’t think people go as much anymore because of all the TV channels we have available at home these days and we can just watch so much at home. I honestly can’t remember my last time at the cinema, it could be as long as 10 years ago. VICARIO IN PRE-SEASON ACTION AGAINST WEST HAM LAST SUMMER, SHORTLY AFTER JOINING SPURS “It was a good day, we didn’t win even though we probably deserved it but it was my first game and I will always remember it”

THFC my favourite... M Y FAVO U R I T E , , , 8 1 Continuing our new feature for this season, as we ask our supporters to pick out their Spurs favourites on a variety of subjects… MY FAVOURITE GAME Certainly has to be that game at the City of Manchester Stadium, a mustwin game to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in our history and boy did we enjoy it! Younes Kaboul running up and down the right hand side of that pitch and after probing for a long time, Marton Fulop parried his cross into the path of Peter Crouch to nod home for the win. That was an unforgettable night for me as a Spurs fan in Ghana and to top it off, David Bentley pouring that bucket full of water on Harry Redknapp during his post-game interview. Happy days. MY FAVOURITE PLAYER  Jermaine Jenas – the main reason for which I call myself a Spurs fan today. As a kid I enjoyed watching players glide past their opponents with ease through the middle of the pitch and living in Ghana, most of the games we watched were international tournaments or highlights of Real Madrid and Barcelona where you saw the likes of Guti, Iniesta, Kaka, Cambiasso. So to watch highlights of a Premier League game where a player from Spurs did those things with such elegance caught my attention and made me want to watch him every week. NAME: KENNETH LIGI AGE: 32 MY FAVOURITE GOAL Gareth Bale at the Hawthorns on 3 February 2013. After a tight first half which saw the team go into the break having been shut out by a resolute West Brom defence, in came Gareth Bale! After receiving a pass from Kyle Walker on the edge of the box, he took a touch and went past his marker before rifling a rocket into the top corner from 20 yards to put us 1-0 up and eventually win the game for us. This is my favourite because it was the first of many of that style from him that season. MY FAVOURITE SPURS KIT It has to be the 2009/10 kit – the design with the yellow on the sides and the kit sponsor on the front made it the best I’ve seen. Fans of other teams enjoyed wearing it and I even saw a group of guys at the beach here in Ghana wearing them with their names on the back. It was massive here in Ghana and for me, I’m still yet to see a better Spurs kit. FAVOURITE AWAY DAY Amsterdam. What a game. Two-nil down at half time and 3-0 in the tie, we finally woke up. Dele Alli found spaces that were created by Fernando Llorente. The players finally understood what was at stake and wanted to get there. Lucas Moura went into beast mode and scored a hat-trick to level the tie and send us through on away goals. Nothing beats the countdown from the Ajax fans for the last 10 seconds of the game. Just the perfect time for the ball to end up in the back of their net. They were distraught. Their players fell to the ground in agony. I immediately lost my voice and couldn’t sleep that night because I wanted everyone to know that my Tottenham were finally in the final of the Champions League. Want to feature on this page?
