THFC 5 9 SPURS ON FILM LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT – PART II Our ‘Spurs On Film’ feature in our Aston Villa programme earlier this season focused on appearances made by our players and managers on light entertainment shows such as Noel’s House Party, You Bet!, The Masked Singer and The Masked Dancer. Today, we look at some more programmes of a similar genre that have featured Spurs players and managers. Spanning 19 regular series and broadcast on BBC One between 1995 and 2006, They Think It’s All Over was a comedy panel show with a sporting theme. The show’s title used Kenneth Wolstenholme’s famous commentary line to describe Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick goal in England’s 1966 FIFA World Cup Final victory over West Germany; “they think it’s all over… it is now!” Originally recorded as a radio show, which was hosted by Des Lynam between 1992 and 1994, the television version was first broadcast on 14 September, 1995. Hosted by Nick Hancock, the two team captains were David Gower and former Spurs striker Gary Lineker. Lee Hurst was a regular guest up until the end of the fifth series, and accompanied Gower on each With the 2022/23 season marking the launch of SPURSPLAY – the Club’s new home of exclusive live and on-demand video - ANDY GREEVES takes a look at the ways in which Tottenham Hotspur, our players and managers have featured in television, film and advertising over the years. The series continues today with a look at light entertainment television shows that our players and managers have featured on over the years. 6 0 THFC SPURS ON FILM show while Rory McGrath appeared alongside Lineker through until the end of series 15. After Lineker’s departure, McGrath remained on the show until the end of its final series, which was first broadcast between 24 October and 12 December, 2005. The show featured a number of rounds such as ‘Excuses’ – in which the panel were asked what excuse a team or individual gave for a particular misdemeanour – and ‘Celebrations’, where explanations were offered for a particularly sporting celebration. Plenty of guests with a Spurs connection joined the They Think It’s All Over panel over the years, with our former striker Teddy Sheringham joining Gower and Hurst’s team for an episode (Series 2 Episode 6) in April, 1996. Ian Walker and Chris Waddle both teamed up with the same duo during Series 3 while Brad Friedel appeared on Series 14 Episode 1. Neil Ruddock and the legendary Jimmy Greaves joined a newly-formed team of Gower and McGrath during Series 16 (Episodes 2 and 5 respectively) to take on new captain Phil Tufnell and regular guest Jonathan Ross. Spurs-supporting chef Antony Worrall Thompson and athlete Iwan Thomas also took part in Series 16. Paul Robinson, Jermain Defoe and Les Ferdinand were amongst other former Spurs players to take part in the show while a 2006 special – first broadcast on 2 June that year – pitted our former midfielder and coach Steffen Freund up against ex-player CHRIS WADDLE ON THEY THINK IT’S ALL OVER ERIC DIER WITH PRESENTER ROMESH RANGANATHAN ON A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN DAVID GINOLA ON DANCE AVEC LES STARS TH20_58-61_Spurs_on_Film 170 2.indd 60 04/04/2023 14:58

First broadcast on Sky One (now Sky Max) on 11 March, 2000, ALOTO will be in its 18th series when it returns this autumn. Our former skipper Jamie Redknapp has been a team captain for all previous 17 series while opposing captains have been Georgie Thompson, John Bishop, Freddie Flintoff, Jack Whitehall and, currently, Micah Richards. Originally hosted by James Corden, Romesh Ranganathan replaced him in 2020. Like They Think It’s All Over, there have been a large number of ex/ current-Spurs players and managers on the ALOTO panel including Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Graeme Souness, Joe Hart, Harry Redknapp, Edgar Davids, Andros Townsend, Dele Alli, Robbie Keane, David Ginola, Jermaine Jenas, Eric Dier, Teddy Sheringham and Kyle Walker. First broadcast on BBC One on 15 May, 2004, the celebrity dance talent show Strictly Come Dancing is one of the most viewed series currently on British television and will be in its 21th series when it returns later this year. Originally hosted by Spurs supporter Sir Bruce Forsyth up to and including the 13th series, the show has featured a number of ex-footballers including Peter Shilton, Peter Schmeichel, Tony Adams, David James, John Barnes, Alex Scott and Robbie Savage but is yet to included an individual with a playing connection to us. However, the format of ‘Strictly’ (as it is often referred to and which is a continuation of the long-running series Come Dancing broadcast between 1949 and 1998) has been exported to 60 other countries under the title Dancing With The Stars). Allan Nielsen, who scored our winning goal in the 1999 Football League Cup Final, appeared on Series 7 of ‘Vild Med Dans’ in his native Denmark in 2010. Dancing with Vickie Jo Ringgaard, Nielsen was eliminated in the show’s fourth week. David Ginola meanwhile appeared in the first series broadcast in France called ‘Dance Avec Les Stars’ and finished third in the contest dancing with Silvia Notargiacomo. Television talent shows are nothing new to Ginola, who appeared on a celebrity version of Stars In Their Eyes in 2000. Broadcast on ITV between 1990 and 2006 - with a brief reprieve in 2015 – Stars In Their Eyes gave contestants the chance to appear and perform as a famous singer. Ginola’s appearance saw him perform as Sacha Distel singing the Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic ‘Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head’. 6 8 THFC ENGLAND’S TOP SCORER TH20_68-71_Kanes_Crown.indd 68 04/04/2023 15:09

THFC 6 9 ENGLAND’S TOP SCORER Harry Kane continued to send records tumbling when he became England’s all-time top goalscorer during the recent international break. Our talismanic striker had already climbed to the top of our own goalscoring charts this season, over-taking the legendary Jimmy Greaves when he scored his 267th Spurs goal in our 1-0 win here against Manchester City in February. With the club record under his belt, Harry went into England’s Euro 2024 qualify against Italy in Naples last month with his country’s record in his sights. Already level with Wayne Rooney on 53 England goals, our Academy graduate captained his nation against Italy for his 81st cap and, after Declan Rice had given the Three Lions the lead, Kane stepped up to drill home a penalty for his 54th England goal and move outright at the top of the charts. England won the game 2-1. A glance at England’s all-time goalscoring list reveals that seven of the 23 players to score 20-plus goals have Spurs links, including four in the all-time top 10. Here they are... HARRY KANE 54 goals in 81 caps at Spurs Harry made the dream debut when he scored 79 seconds after coming off the bench against Lithuania in March 2015. Named captain in 2017, he has since led the Three Lions to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, where he claimed the tournament’s Golden Boot, the Euro 2020 Final – netting four goals in three games, and the last eight of the 2022 World Cup. His goal against Italy last month now sees him top scorer for club and country. GARY LINEKER 48 goals in 80 caps/19 goals in 38 caps at Spurs Gary fell one goal short of Bobby Charlton’s record when he finished his England career in 1992 with 48 in 80 appearances. He made his international debut as a Leicester City player in 1984 KANE’S CROWN TH20_68-71_Kanes_Crown.indd 69 04/04/2023 15:09

7 0 THFC ENGLAND’S TOP SCORER but it was in the following three years that he really hit the heights, scoring 23 goals in 26 matches. He joined us from Barcelona in July 1989 and finished his first campaign as the top scorer in the old First Division. He became the first England player to win the World Cup Golden Boot when he scored six times at the 1986 finals and helped England reach the semi-finals at Italia 90. JIMMY GREAVES 44 goals in 57 caps/28 goals in 42 caps at Spurs One of the greatest strikers of all time, Greavsie scored his 44 goals for England in only 57 matches. He made his international debut in 1959 and had already struck 16 times in 15 games before he joined us in December 1961. He scored four times in a game twice for England, the second time coming just a couple of weeks before the start of the 1966 World Cup. Though he started the tournament up front for Sir Alf Ramsey’s side, an injury in the final group game gave Geoff Hurst the chance to stake his claim and create his own piece of history in England’s triumph over West Germany. VIVIAN WOODWARD 29 goals in 23 caps/27 goals in 21 caps at Spurs One of the game’s earliest stars, Great Britain’s victorious captain at both the 1908 and 1912 Olympic Games, Vivian Woodward’s record of 29 goals in 23 internationals between 1903-11 gives him the highest goals-to-game ratio of any of the strikers in England’s top 10, and all bar three of his efforts came during his time with us. His tally was England’s record for 47 years until Tom Finney surpassed him in 1958. PETER CROUCH 22 goals in 42 caps/6 goals in 8 caps at Spurs Having come through the ranks at White Hart Lane but never made a first-team appearance, Peter was prolific for QPR, Portsmouth and Southampton before getting the call from England in 2005. He was in scintillating form in 2006, scoring 11 goals in 12 internationals and famously celebrating with his robotic dancing. He returned to us in 2009 after stints at Liverpool and Portsmouth and played in his second World Cup the following year. THFC 7 1 ENGLAND’S TOP SCORER MARTIN PETERS 20 goals in 67 caps/9 goals in 34 caps at Spurs Always revered as a member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning team, Martin did not arrive at White Hart Lane until March 1970, but won over half of his caps during his time with us. He went to the 1970 World Cup shortly after and scored in the quarter-final against West Germany, only for the reigning champions to go out having led 2-0 – team-mate Alan Mullery also on target that day. Martin scored his final international goal when England beat Scotland 1-0 at Wembley Stadium in May 1973. JERMAIN DEFOE 20 goals in 57 caps/16 goals in 49 caps at Spurs Signed for us in February 2004, and made his England debut the following month, though he was strangely overlooked for both Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup. He did go to the 2010 World Cup, at which point he was in the middle of his second spell at White Hart Lane, and scored the only goal in England’s final group game against Slovenia to ensure progress to the last 16. An interesting note – Jermain’s final England cap was Harry Kane’s first as skipper, a 2-2 draw against Scotland on 10 June 2017. THFC 8 1 T H E D A LY C O L U M N 03/04/19 – SPURS 2-0 CRYSTAL PALACE Roy Hodgson felt Spurs players may be “anxious” in pursuit of a win on the night of the new stadium’s grand opening, but nerves were eased when Heung-Min Son’s shot earned him the honour of being the first men’s goalscorer here. Christian Eriksen sealed it. 09/04/19 – SPURS 1-0 MAN CITY Hugo Lloris’ penalty save to deny Sergio Aguero only added to a deafening atmosphere in the stadium’s first European fixture. Spurs claimed a key victory in the run to a Champions League final, despite Harry Kane picking up an ankle injury. Son’s goal was a fitting reward for extreme perseverance. 26/11/19 – SPURS 4-2 OLYMPIAKOS Jose Mourinho’s first home game in charge started disastrously with Spurs 2-0 down by the 19th minute, but tactical tweaks and a buoyant crowd inspired the comeback. Ball boy Callum Hynes showed his sharp thinking too, to help get Spurs going quickly, in a move that resulted in Harry Kane scoring for 2-2. 07/12/19 – SPURS 5-0 BURNLEY Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was completely in awe of Heung-Min Son after his incredible 70-yard run and finish, breaking beyond a cluster of bemused Burnley defenders to score what would be the FIFA Puskas Award winning goal. 02/02/20 – SPURS 2-0 MAN CITY Debut strikes don’t get much better than Steven Bergwijn’s against Manchester City. The Dutchman brought down Lucas Moura’s hanging pass with his chest and thumped the ball past Ederson without allowing it to touch the ground – prompting a South Stand roar I’ll never forget. 06/12/20 – SPURS 2-0 ARSENAL The 2,000 fans back at Spurs’ stadium were a welcome sight after countless games in front of empty seats due to COVID. The (brief) return of supporters was perfectly timed for a north London derby. Prime Son and Kane set each other up for superb goals. 02/05/21 – SPURS 4-0 SHEFFIELD UNITED It’s hard to imagine just how loud the appreciation would have been for Gareth Bale’s insanely good hat-trick against the Blades, had Spurs fans been in attendance. The attack of Bale, Kane and Son – three club legends in one team – was a joy to watch too. 12/05/22 – SPURS 3-0 ARSENAL Had Arsenal won that night, Champions League qualification was theirs. But two goals for Kane, one for Son and the Rob Holding red card were the game’s flashpoints as Spurs ultimately finished in the top four. 17/09/22 – SPURS 6-2 LEICESTER Having failed to score yet this season, Heung-Min Son was brought off the bench (an unusual sight itself) around the hour mark. A dipping, long range stunner ended the drought. Emotional and static, he was mobbed by teammates before going on to score a hat-trick. 05/02/22 – SPURS 1-0 MAN CITY The day Harry Kane became Spurs’ greatest-ever scorer. Goal number 267 wasn’t his cleanest strike but was extremely precise to win the match on 15 minutes. Fans stayed behind for his post-match words with Paul Coyte on the pitch – a truly memorable afternoon and win. 26/02/22 – SPURS 2-0 CHELSEA Oliver Skipp lived out every Spurs’ fan’s dream in this season’s win over Chelsea. A supporter of the club himself, Skipp unleashed a magical strike past Kepa in front of the South Stand to kickstart a superb second half performance. It’s been four years since Tottenham Hotspur Stadium opened its doors - so SPURSPLAY’s ROB DALY thought he’d look back at his favourite men’s first team games since the return to N17.
