THFCseason after that, I was playing for Spurs in the Premier League. Things were happening very fast for me.The challenge and intensity of the Premier League was different to the Portuguese league. It was a challenge I was really happy to take on.What were your respective Spurs head coaches, Jacques Santini and then Martin Jol, like for you?Frank Arnesen and Jacques Santini were the two individuals most responsible for me signing for Spurs, so I’ll always be grateful to them. Jacques was a fantastic person and a great manager, with good ideas. The language barrier was an issue for him though… he spoke via a translator and that always makes it difficult to get your ideas across directly. There was eventually a change and Martin Jol took over. Bringing in a new manager meant there was a different mentality, a different approach. Eventually, this led to my departure to Portsmouth because it got to the point where what I wanted from a footballing side of things wasn’t being fulfilled. I loved the club, the fans, and my family and I loved living in London. But eventually, it was the right time to move on.Who were your best friends during your time at Spurs?Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane were good friends, as were Mido and Noureddine Naybet. My room-mate was Fredi Kanoute, so I have to mention him too. I moved to Portsmouth and I went there with Noe Pamarot and Sean Davis, who I’d known from Spurs and again, people I had a good relationship with. Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been up to since retiring from playing?I have established my own football agency in my home town of Guimarães. It keeps me busy, it can be challenging at times. It keeps me in football without being a manager or a coach. I was always keen to stay in football after retiring from playing but not in coaching. Including first team and academy players, I look after between 30 and 40 players. Have you had the chance to visit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since its opening in 2019? I was invited to the Champions League match against Sporting a number of seasons ago when Antonio Conte was still the Spurs manager. It was incredible to see the stadium. It is unbelievable… a work of art. Every matchday, the supporters must be so happy to spend time in a stadium like that. The new stadium is practically on the same site as the old ground. That adds to what makes it so special. Finally, what were your thoughts seeing Spurs win the UEFA Europa League Final against today’s opponents, Manchester United, last season? I have an affection for all of my former clubs, so I look to watch Spurs matches whenever it is possible. I was delighted for the club to win a trophy last season. Spurs is a special club with a charismatic fan base. A European trophy for the fans was wonderful, after they waited a long time for silverware. “SADLY I CAN ONLY EVER CALL IT A ‘GREAT EFFORT’ BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY ‘THE GOAL’ WASN’T GIVEN!”

They have a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League going into this weekend, having won eight of their 10 Premier League matches to date, only dropping points in a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield before being held 1-1 by Manchester City at the Emirates. They’ve also scored the joint second highest amount of goals (18) and conceded the least (three) so far this season. Arsenal have shared those league goals out with 11 different players having already found the target and it’s new signing Viktor Gyokeres who leads the way with four strikes. Our recent form against the Gunners hasn’t been the best, we haven’t beaten them since a 3-0 win here in N17 in May 2022 and we’ve only taken a single point from games against them since – in a 2-2 draw at the Emirates in September 2023 when Heung-Min Son scored twice. But we have scored on each of our last seven trips to their enclosure and will be hoping to increase that run in a few weeks’ time and pick up points as well.

6 6THFCSpirited comeback sees win over RedsToko Koga and Bethany England were on target as we came from behind to defeat Liverpool 2-1 to return to winning ways in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday.Making her ninth consecutive start of the season, defender Koga was in the right place at the right time, following excellent work by Olivia Holdt, to net her first goal for the Club just eight minutes after Beata Olsson fired the away side into the lead at Brisbane Road.In a game of few chances, we needed to make the most of our opportunities and England did just that seven minutes after the break, firing us into the lead with a clinical finish from inside the box after a low cross from Amanda Nilden – her first goal in the WSL since our opening day victory over West Ham United.A professional display from then on saw us hold onto that lead and take all three points to secure our fifth win of the campaign - already matching our haul from the entirety of last season. The result also sees us leapfrog Arsenal and move into fourth.Toko sets new recordToko Koga became our youngest-ever goalscorer in the WSL after she opened her account for the Club in the 2-1 win over Liverpool. At 19 years and 300 days, Toko’s first goal for the Club last weekend meant she became our first-ever teenager to score in England's top flight and subsequently broke the record for our youngest goalscorer in the competition.TOKO KOGA IS ALL SMILES AFTER NETTING HER FIRST SPURS GOALOMENʼS TOKO KOGA
THFC6 7 It was a record that was previously held by Angela Addison - at 20 years, two months and three days – after she netted in our 2-2 draw with Everton in February, 2019.Tapping home from close range after Olivia Holdt’s chipped cross into the box to net her first goal in the WSL, the Japan international also toppled a WSL record by becoming the youngest ever Asian player to score in the league.England creates WSL history once againThe WSL records keep reaching new heights for Bethany England after her second half strike in our win over Liverpool saw her create history once more. After Toko Koga’s first goal for the Club cancelled out Beata Olsson’s early opener for the away side, our captain was on hand to fire us into the lead eight minutes after the break with a clinical finish from inside the box – and that strike saw her become the first player in the WSL to net 50 home goals in the competition. Her goal against the Reds was her 11th goal at Brisbane Road since completing her move to north London in January, 2023 – netting 17 home goals in total for us, including six at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.Vinberg: “It all comes down to confidence”It has been a positive start to life under Martin Ho – and Matilda Vinberg spoke about the confidence in herself and the team so far.Now in her second full season at the Club, having joined us in January, 2024, ‘Tilly’ has pinpointed the reasons for her strong displays since her return to action.“I think it all comes down to confidence,” she explained, speaking on the sofa for Spurs Weekly. “If you have great confidence, everything just flows. You get that confidence from your coach and your team-mates.“I remember when we were in Spain and played one of my best games in a Spurs shirt - a lot of that came from the confidence from the coach.“Knowing that I have belief and support from both the coach and the girls gives me so much confidence. I feel like I have a role on the pitch that’s unique to me, the freedom to do what I know I need to do in certain spaces - it lets me shine naturally.”SEPTEMBERSUN 7 H WEST HAM 1-0SUN 14 A EVERTON 2-0FRI 19 H MANCHESTER CITY 1-5WED 24 H ASTON VILLA (LC) 0-0SUN 28 A LEICESTER CITY 2-1OCTOBERSUN 5 H BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 1-0SAT 12 A CHELSEA 0-1SUN 19 H BIRMINGHAM CITY (LC) 3-0NOVEMBERSUN 2 H LIVERPOOL 2-1SUN 9 A LONDON CITY LIONESSES 12PMSUN 16 H ARSENAL 2.30PMSUN 23 A BRISTOL CITY (LC) 3PMDECEMBERSUN 7 H ASTON VILLA 2PMSUN 14 A MANCHESTER UNITED 1PMJANUARYSUN 11 H LEICESTER CITY 2PMSUN 25 H LIVERPOOL 2PMFEBRUARYSUN 1 A WEST HAM UNITED 12PMSUN 8 H CHELSEA* 2PMSUN 15 A ASTON VILLA 2PMMARCHSUN 15 H EVERTON* 2PMSUN 22 A MANCHESTER CITY 12PMSUN 29 A ARSENAL 2PMAPRILSUN 26 H MANCHESTER UNITED* 2PMHOME GAMES AT BRISBANE ROAD UNLESS STATED* - AT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUMLC – SUBWAY WOMEN’S LEAGUE CUPFIXTURES & RESULTSWSL TABLE 2025/26(UP TO 02.11.25)BETHANY ENGLANDTeam GP W D L +/- PTSChelsea 7 6 1 0 14:3 19Man City 7 6 0 1 18:8 18Man Utd 7 5 2 0 19:5 17Spurs 7 5 0 2 9:8 15Arsenal 7 4 2 1 17:7 14London City 7 3 0 4 7:16 9Brighton 7 2 1 4 8:8 7Aston Villa 6 1 4 1 7:7 7Everton 7 1 2 4 10:14 5Leicester 7 1 2 4 4:12 5Liverpool 6 0 0 6 3:12 0West Ham 7 0 0 7 2:18 0
6 8THFCSaints take the spoilsOur Under-21s were left frustrated as Southampton escaped from Hotspur Way with maximum points in the Premier League 2 last Saturday.Despite controlling the game for long spells and missing a big chance to take the lead when Oli Irow blazed over the bar, we fell behind seven minutes before the break when Baylee Dipepa fired home from the right angle inside the box, with substitute Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh doubling the visitors’ lead on the hour with a pinpoint low shot into the bottom corner.Defender Pele Arganese-McDermott reduced the arrears when he headed home his first goal in our colours nine minutes later but despite Reiss Russell-Denny and James Rowswell going close and Yusuf Akhamrich hitting the bar in the latter stages, we couldn’t find an equaliser and slipped to a 2-1 defeat. We seemed to struggle to turn our good passages of play into goalscoring opportunities over the course of the game and by the end it was the Saints who’d enjoyed the better chances overall.Recognition for LeoLeo Black has won the club’s October Goal of the Month award after his volley in our UEFA Youth League victory at AS Monaco. 7 0THFCFirst European lossOur youngsters suffered their first UEFA Youth League defeat of the season on Tuesday afternoon, losing out 3-2 to FC Copenhagen at Hotspur Way.Missing a handful of regular starters due to international duty and injuries and having conceded to Gunnar Olsen and Dominik Sarapata in the closing stages of a disappointing first half, we improved after the restart and were thrown a lifeline four minutes into the second period when Callum Olusesi tapped home.Copenhagen, however, were able to fashion a third goal through Jonathan Moalem soon afterwards and although substitute Tynan Thompson reduced our arrears once more, we couldn’t find a way back as our 100 per cent record in the competition came to an end on matchday four.Challenging time for England’s youngstersA number of our young players have been in action for England’s youth set-up in recent days.Luca Williams-Barnett and Malachi Hardy are away in Qatar representing the Young Lions at the Under-17 World Cup.The duo both saw action on Tuesday in a 3-0 defeat to Venezuela. England were due to face Haiti yesterday before taking on Egypt in the final group stage game on Monday (3.45pm UK).Jun’ai Byfield, Tynan Thompson and Elijah Upson had been due to be involved for England, but unfortunately all had to withdraw at different stages in the lead-up to the tournament. In addition to the World Cup, England’s youngsters have also been in European Under-17 Championship qualifying action up in Scotland, but consecutive defeats against the host nation (1-0), Lithuania (1-0) and Sweden (5-3) meant they were eliminated from the competition.Oscar Sandiford and Oliver Boast were both on duty for the Young Lions, with the latter scoring a penalty against Sweden in their third game on Monday.Cup journey endsOur involvement in this season’s Under17 Premier League Cup came to an end with a 3-1 defeat at West Ham United last midweek (Tuesday 28 October).Victory in what was our third and final group stage game would have sent us through to the knockout stages of a competition we won last season. But the Hammers triumphed 3-1 in the end, Reiss Elliott-Parris with our goal.TYNAN THOMPSON FIRES HOME OUR SECOND DURING THE DEFEAT TO COPENHAGENNDER-18S

He makes a lot of saves and is someone I can learn IN PROFILE: BLAKE IROWa lot from. I grew up watching Hugo Lloris, who was a big inspiration to me. 74THFCFORM GUIDE A 3-0 away win for Egypt in Djibouti on 8 October saw the ‘Pharaohs’ seal their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Hossam Hassan’s side were unbeaten throughout their qualifying campaign, winning eight of their 10 Group A fixtures and drawing the other two. Egypt are currently on a 14-match unbeaten run, with their last defeat coming back on 26 March, 2024 as they were beaten 2-4 by Croatia in the ACUD International Football Cup (FIFA Series) Final. Their most recent game saw them win 1-0 against Guinea-Bissau in Cairo on 12 October in the last of their 2026 World Cup qualifiers.THE GAFFERAs a player, Hossam Hassan had an incredible international career. His 69 strikes in 177 matches for Egypt between 1985 and 2006 makes him his country’s top, all-time goalscorer. Hassan was a three-time Africa Cup of Nations winner as a player for Egypt while he was included in the Pharaohs’ 22-man squad for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.Born in Cairo on 10 August, 1966, Hassan has gone on to manage many clubs he previously played for, with no less than five spells in charge of Al Masry and two periods as boss of both Zamalek and Al Ittihad Alexandria. His first experience of national team management came between 2013 and 2014 when he was head coach of Jordan. He led the ‘Chivalrous Ones’ to the AFC–CONMEBOL Play-Off, where they took on Uruguay for a place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup after their then best-ever performance in a World Cup qualifying campaign. Alas, they were beaten 0-5 on aggregate by Uruguay in the Play-Offs. Hassan’s most recent job in club management came with Cairo-based side Modern Future (formerly known as Future FC and Coca-Cola FC). But just days after his appointment in February 2024, he was released in order to become manager of the Egypt national team. Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Andy Greeves offers the lowdown on various nations that will be appearing at the tournament and explores their Tottenham Hotspur connections. This afternoon’s featured nation is Egypt.World In Motion
7 5THFCKEY PLAYERMohamed Salah is closing in on his manager Hossam Hassan’s goalscoring record for Egypt, with the Liverpool frontman having netted 63 times in 108 senior international matches to date. Born in Nagrig on 15 June, 1992, Salah’s club career has seen him represent Al-Mokawloon, Basel, Chelsea and Fiorentina (loan) while he moved from Roma to Liverpool back in 2017. His honours during his time at Anfield so far include two Premier League titles, two EFL Cups, the FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Salah has twice been an Africa Cup of Nations runner-up with Egypt in 2017 and 2021. He spearheaded the Pharaohs’ run to the 2018 FIFA World Cup – the country’s first World Cup appearance in 28 years – with five goals in a successful qualification campaign. He scored two goals in two appearances at the 2018 finals. Salah once again proved his importance to the national team by scoring nine goals in the Pharaohs’ qualifying matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. SPURS CONNECTIONSFormer Zamalek, Gent, Ajax, Celta Vigo and Marseille striker Ahmed Hossam Hussein Abdelhamid - known simply as ‘Mido’ - joined us on an 18-month loan from Roma in January 2005. Scoring twice for us on his debut in 3-1 win over Portsmouth on 5 February that year, the Egypt international would eventually sign permanently for us in August, 2006. He scored a total of 19 goals in 61 appearances in all competitions before a move to Middlesbrough in 2007. During his time at Boro, Mido was loaned to Wigan Athletic and West Ham United as well as former club Zamalek while he had permanent spells with his old teams Ajax and Zamalek thereafter. He retired from playing in 2013 after a brief spell with Barnsley. He scored 19 goals in 51 appearances for Egypt during his career. Hossam Ghaly joined us from Feyenoord in January, 2006 and made his debut against today’s opponents, Manchester United on 9 September that year. His first goal in our colours arrived a month later in a 2-0 away win over Besiktas in the UEFA Cup. He managed two other strikes for us in 34 competitive appearances against Chelsea in the FA Cup and Watford in the Premier League, both of which came in 2007.Ghaly was loaned to Derby County during the second part of the 2007/08 season while he was transferred permanently to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in 2009. A spell with Belgian club Lierse was sandwiched in between two periods at his first club, Al-Ahly. He returned to Al-Nassr in 2017 and Al Ahly once again in 2018 before hanging up his boots that same year. Ghaly scored three goals in 70 appearances for Egypt during his career and was part of the Pharaohs squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2010. In 2022, Ghaly was named as part of the CAF Champions League Team of the Decade (2010–2020). He won the CAF Champions League with Al-Ahly in 2012. WORLD CUP HISTORYEgypt were invited to compete at the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930 but a storm in the Mediterranean Sea meant they missed a connecting ship to Uruguay. The tournament went ahead with 13 teams rather than 16, following the Pharaohs’ absence and the withdrawal of both Japan and Siam.Egypt’s tournament debut came four years later, where they were beaten 2-4 by Hungary in Naples in their first match at the competition on 27 May, 1934 and thus, were eliminated at the round of 16 stage. Some 56 years on from their tournament debut, Egypt returned to the World Cup finals at Italia ’90. They finished bottom of Group F, having drawn two of their matches against the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland, while they were beaten by England. At their most recent FIFA World Cup appearance in Russia in 2018, Egypt finished bottom of Group A following defeats to Uruguay, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Joining us from Nottingham Forest in September 2023, the forward marked his century when stepping off the bench against Chelsea. Top scorer last season and our Europa League Final hero, he is also top scorer within our current squad with 27 goals in his 101 games, 18 of them in 75 Premier League games. DESTINY UDOGIE…returned from injury in last weekend’s defeat to Chelsea. Having missed a couple of matches at the start of the season with a knee injury, the Italian defender was again ruled out after picking up irritation on his knee while on international duty. But he was back last Sunday, making his 75th Spurs appearance off the bench against the Blues.

THFCIn a new feature for this season, Billy Shaw catches up with the players to remember the kits they wore on their first appearance for Spurs. Today, former midfielder David Howells looks back…David Howells can still vividly picture his first Spurs shirt in his mind’s eye – even if it wasn’t as clear to everyone else on the day he wore it!A product of our youth system, the midfielder was drafted in for his senior debut when we went to Sheffield Wednesday in the old First Division during February of 1986.A great day became even better when the then-18-yearold scored, helping us to a 2-1 victory. As he explains, though, large amounts of snow on the pitch made it difficult for team-mates and fans to pick him out as he trotted around in our iconic all-Lilywhite Hummel strip!“The trouble was, it snowed on my debut and the all-white kit just blended into the snow – you couldn’t see anyone!” he laughed.“It was the Hummel kit with the chevrons on the chest – a classic Spurs kit, glorious in all white. I scored that day – we played with an orange ball.”John Chiedozie was also on target as we came back from Sheffield with victory in the bag, although David wasn’t able to keep his shirt as a memento for two reasons – one, because it wasn’t the done thing in those days and two, for fear of feeling the wrath of one of our all-time greats.“We weren’t allowed to keep the kits then, although it wasn’t my shirt really – I think I was number 10 that day because Glenn Hoddle didn’t play, so I wasn’t going to be able to keep that one, was I?” he smiled. “Glenn was fit the next week so he got it back quite quickly!”MY DEBUT KITName: David HowellsPosition: MidfielderDebut: Sheffield Wednesday away, Division One (22 February, 1986)Age on debut: 18Debut kit: 1985/86 home kitIn detail: One of our classic kits from the 1980s, our home strip in 1985/86 – also used in 1986/87 – featured the trademark chevrons of manufacturers Hummel down the sides of the sleeves and in one horizontal strip across the front of the chest, with the logo of main sponsor Holsten displayed just below. Diagonal pinstripes occupied the space above the chevrons and below the neckline, with white shorts and socks making for a clean, resplendent look.Howells 1985/86
