Spurs v Sunderland

Spurs v Sunderland PL 2526

THFChave highlights of their careers… great goals, great bits of skill. And I have a throw in that I wasted some time taking and getting a yellow card! What prompted your move to Sunderland in the summer of 2008? It was a huge disappointment to leave the club I had dreamt about playing for. When Juande Ramos came in, I knew my game time would be limited. I could have stayed at Spurs longer, sat on the bench. But I’m not that kind of guy… I wanted to be playing. Sunderland came in for me and I travelled there to speak to Roy Keane, who was the head coach at the time. He really wanted to sign me and as someone who had such a great playing career playing in the same position as me, that meant a lot. How do you look back on your time there? We had a difficult first season when I was at Sunderland but we were able to stay in the Premier League. Going there, I saw how big a club Sunderland is. I think people only appreciate just how big they are when they go there. As someone who grew up supporting Spurs, I knew how massive the north London derby was. But my word, Sunderland-Newcastle… what a massive rivalry there is between those two and games between them are intense to say the least! Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been up to since retiring from playing? After I retired from playing, I actually did a year of scouting work for Spurs. I travelled for the club mainly across Scandinavia but also in other parts of Europe. Then I started to coach. I started with youth teams. I then went back to one of my former clubs, FC Haka. They were struggling a bit and I wanted to get them back to the top division in Finland. I became manager and we were able to get the club promoted back to the top flight with a record-breaking season. I stayed for five years and then it was time to try something new. My former colleague (Toni Koskela) became a manager in Cyprus (with AEL Limassol) and he asked me if I wanted to become his assistant and I said, ‘why not!’ We were only there for about four months unfortunately as there were a lot of problems. After that, I spent some time with the Finland national team as an assistant. I was in that role when we played against England at Wembley in September 2024 and Harry Kane got his 100th England cap.My most recent coaching job was in Estonia (with Tallinna Kalev). There has been some interest in me since, but I have wanted to calm things down and take a bit of time before taking my next coaching role. Finally, you played in Legends games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019 and 2025. What were those experiences like?Incredible. You’ll remember we played against an Inter Milan team in 2019 before the Spurs first team had played at the stadium. And I scored the first goal in that game, so that’s a very small piece of history I am very happy to have! It is always great to get back to Spurs. And in those Legends games, there are quite a few players from my era, so it’s always great to catch up. I’ve told the club, whenever they are looking to get a game organised, I’m there!“I’VE TOLD THE CLUB, WHENEVER THEY ARE LOOKING TO GET A GAME ORGANISED, I’M THERE!”

Andoni Iraola’s side had drawn the last three of those, including 0-0 at home to Chelsea and a crazy 4-4 draw at Old Trafford against Manchester United.Apart from one FA Cup tie in 1957, we’ve only ever played Bournemouth in Premier League fixtures. Of our 17 matches in the competition so far, we’ve won 10 and lost four although we haven’t beaten them since a 3-1 win in north London on 31 December 2023, when Pape Matar Sarr, Heung-Min Son and Richarlison all netted. We lost 1-0 on our last trip to the Vitality Stadium in December 2024 and our last victory at Bournemouth was a 2-0 win in August 2023, James Maddison scoring his first-ever Spurs goal with Dejan Kulusevski also on target.Kick-off on Wednesday is at 7.30pm, with the game live on Sky Sports.

6 6THFCLate strike ends cup hopesFridolina Rolfo's late goal consigned us to a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the Subway Women's League Cup.Just as in the Women's Super League encounter earlier in the month, we forged ahead at the Progress With Unity Stadium in Leigh, only to be pegged back by United. It means we bow out at the quarter-final stage for the fourth season on the trot after an unbeaten group phase in the competition.Drew Spence struck a picture-book volley to open the scoring on 16 minutes to capitalise on a strong first half but Jess Park equalised seven minutes after the restart before, four minutes from time, Rolfo was on hand to cause us heartbreak once again. Having scored the last-minute leveller in the 3-3 WSL draw, the Sweden international fired home the winning goal for United this time to secure their spot in the final four.Ho: “They gave me absolutely everything”Martin Ho was once again full of praise for his player’s efforts to go toe-to-toe with Manchester United, but he was left disappointed with the final result.Although our journey in the competition has come to an end at the quarter-final stage, our Head Coach was pleased with large spells of the performance – specifically taking the game to the home side in the first half.“The performance for large parts was good, I thought we were competitive,” Martin told us, reflecting on the game with SPURSPLAY. “We pushed right to the end, and I think it shows how far we’ve come. They were trying to wear down the clock DREW SPENCE CRACKS HOME A WONDERFUL VOLLEY TO OPEN THE SCORINGOMENʼS MARTIN HO

THFC6 7and waste time near the end, which shows they respect us. We’re very disappointed with the result, but the performance for large parts was very good.“If we’d just maintained our level a little more between maybe the 65th and 80th minutes, we could have pushed the game even further. But I can’t ask any more of them - they’ve done everything again this week. We’ve lifted our level, we’ve been more creative and more dominant, especially in the first half. In the second half, we had moments too, but they gave me absolutely everything and we should be proud of the team.”Hunt reflects on first half of seasonWhile there was a sense of frustration to suffer defeat to Manchester United in the Women’s League Cup, defender Clare Hunt feels the performance shows the progress in the squad over the last six months under Martin Ho.“Moving into the second half of the season, we know exactly what we need to work on,” Clare explained. “I think we’ve developed a lot over the last six months under Martin. Now it’s about continuing to move forward, realising our potential over the next six months and hopefully progressing in the league to see where we end up by the end of the season.“We just need to keep working on that and focus on finding ways to maintain wins in games. When we do have the lead, it’s about controlling possession and minimising chances defensively. It’s given us a lot to work on for the next six months, but overall it’s been a really positive first six months under Martin.“Everyone has put their head down and really put the work in. What we’ve developed so far has been great and there’s still plenty more to work on. There’s a lot of potential within this squad.”SEPTEMBERSUN 7 H WEST HAM 1-0SUN 14 A EVERTON 2-0FRI 19 H MANCHESTER CITY 1-5WED 24 H ASTON VILLA (LC) 0-0SUN 28 A LEICESTER CITY 2-1OCTOBERSUN 5 H BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 1-0SAT 12 A CHELSEA 0-1SUN 19 H BIRMINGHAM CITY (LC) 3-0NOVEMBERSUN 2 H LIVERPOOL 2-1SUN 9 A LONDON CITY LIONESSES 2-4SUN 16 H ARSENAL 0-0SUN 23 A BRISTOL CITY (LC) 1-0DECEMBERSUN 7 H ASTON VILLA 2-1SUN 14 A MANCHESTER UNITED 3-3SUN 21 A MANCHESTER UNITED (LC) 1-2JANUARYSUN 11 H LEICESTER CITY 12PMSUN 18 H LEICESTER CITY (FAC4) 1PMSUN 25 H LIVERPOOL 2PMFEBRUARYSUN 1 A WEST HAM UNITED 12PMSUN 8 H CHELSEA* 2PMSUN 15 A ASTON VILLA 2PMMARCHSUN 15 H EVERTON* 2PMSUN 22 A MANCHESTER CITY 12PMSUN 29 A ARSENAL 2PMAPRILSUN 26 H MANCHESTER UNITED* 2PMHOME GAMES AT BRISBANE ROAD UNLESS STATED* - AT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUMLC – SUBWAY WOMEN’S LEAGUE CUPFIXTURES & RESULTSWSL TABLE 2025/26(UP TO 14.12.25)CLARE HUNTTeam GP W D L +/- PTSMan City 11 10 0 1 32:10 30Chelsea 11 7 3 1 19:6 24Arsenal 11 6 4 1 23:10 22Man Utd 11 6 3 2 24:13 21spurs 11 6 2 3 16:16 20London City 11 5 0 6 14:21 15Brighton 11 4 2 5 14:13 14Aston Villa 11 3 4 4 14:18 13Leicester 11 2 3 6 7:20 9Everton 11 2 2 7 14:22 8West Ham 11 1 2 8 9:24 5Liverpool 11 0 3 8 8:21 3

6 8THFCBig win over CottagersReiss Elliott-Parris bagged his first Under18s hat-trick as our youngsters secured a superb 5-0 victory at Fulham last time out on 20 December. The forward opened his account from the penalty spot with Oliver Boast and Tye Hall joining him on the scoresheet as we dominated the first half-an-hour at Motspur Park, before adding two more after the break to take home the match ball.Fulham improved in the second period and substitutes William Sutton-Bangura and Brodie Dair forced Blake Irow into impressive saves to preserve his clean sheet, but we were worthy winners overall in our final fixture of 2025 at this level.Jamie encouraged by performanceUnder-18s Coach Jamie Carr was delighted with the manner of our victory at Fulham just before Christmas, especially in the wake of our FA Youth Cup exit at the hands of Brighton a few days earlier.“It's not easy coming off the back of a tough result and a lot of the lads had to go again and play significant minutes, so I’m pleased for them from that point of view,” he said. “I was pleased with the application – everyone worked really hard to defend our goal, which was a key focus, and we got our reward in the end.“We’ve been working towards making progress in a couple of areas in particular and I thought the lads bought into it really well and executed some of the things we’ve been asking of them in terms of controlling the middle of the pitch – I think you could see that we created a number of chances from that. Obviously we saw a team that was willing to defend – we’ve spoken a lot about that in terms of making sure we don’t ship poor goals – so I was really pleased with that as well.”Fixture changes and cup dateWe have been drawn away to Bristol City in the quarter-finals of the Under-18 Premier League Cup.The tie has been confirmed to take place on Thursday 29 January, kick-off 7pm at the Robins High Performance Centre.Due to the scheduling of the Bristol City trip, our Under-18 Premier League fixture away to Reading on Saturday 31 January has been postponed, with a new date to be confirmed in due course. In addition, our home Under-18 Premier League match against Aston Villa, postponed last month, will now take place on Wednesday 14 January, kick-off 12pm at Hotspur Way.Furthermore, our away league fixture against Arsenal at Under-18 level has been brought forward from its initial date of Saturday 11 April and will now be played on Tuesday 17 February, kick-off 11am at the Gunners’ London Colney training centre.HAT-TRICK HERO REISS ELLIOTT-PARRIS WITH FELLOW SCORERS TYE HALL (LEFT) AND OLIVER BOAST (RIGHT)NDER-18S

THFCputs things into perspective – it is great that the Club is so involved in its community.”Molly Bartrip, Eveliina Summanen, Luana Buhler and Araya Dennis visited Whipps Cross Hospital. “It’s important that we show our presence in the community”, Molly commented. “It’s about giving back – all we want is for them to have a smile on their face this Christmas, and hopefully we played a small part in that.”Matilda Vinberg, Lize Kop and Amanda Nilden were joined by women’s head coach Martin Ho at Whittington Hospital in Archway.Martin said: “It absolutely puts things into perspective, and that is why as a playing group and a staffing group we have come to show our love and support to these families. We have a wonderful job in what we do, and we want to show as a Club and as a team that we are here for these families during a difficult time in their lives.”And the visits were rounded off with James Maddison, Brandon Players and coaches across our Men’s and Women’s First Team united in a show of support for our local hospitals around the Christmas period. Our players spent time at five hospitals, personally delivering gifts to young patients on the children’s wards. Ben Davies, Cristian Romero, Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson visited Barnet, while Xavi Simons and Joao Palhinha headed to North Middlesex, the Club’s local hospital, surprising a young Spurs fan who was moved to tears at their arrival.Ben said: “We’re incredibly lucky to be in the position that we’re in, so it’s important that we try to do what we can to put some smiles on the faces of the families that are currently facing a difficult festive period.”Joao added: “For me personally it is important as a player to have these appearances, not just for myself but also for my team-mates who have joined in other visits. It is a special moment for us, and it always SPREADINGFESTIVE CHEER!Austin and Archie Gray dropping by the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow.Madders said: “It’s always nice to have that moment with the kids and their parents, especially at this time of year, and to be able to lift their day.”The Club sits within one of London’s most deprived areas and has long recognised its responsibility to support vulnerable people in its communities during the Christmas period.Members of our women’s team recently spent time with residents at a local elderly care home to help combat the onset of loneliness during the Christmas period, while we have also made our traditional delivery of Club-donated items to foodbanks this week.To continue the spirit of spreading festive cheer to children at hospitals, our mascots Chirpy and Lily visited one of Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Christmas parties to spend time with families around the festive period.JOAO PALHINHA AND XAVI SIMONS

THFCThe North Enfield Foodbank opened in 2012 to help support those in the community facing a sudden crisis with food support.Tottenham Foodbank first opened its doors almost six years ago and since then has been providing emergency food parcels for those in crisis across our community. Last winter, Tottenham Foodbank saw 20 per cent more people seeking such help — an additional 166 parcels – with this winter expected to be even busier. The charity, which also provides essential items such as toiletries, has seen donations fall by 75 per cent since their peak during lockdown, forcing the Foodbank to spend over Kevin Danso and Lucas Bergvall made a Club-led delivery of essential items to our local Foodbanks – North Enfield and Tottenham – continuing our proud annual tradition.Foodbanks provide emergency food parcels containing at least three days’ worth of nutritionally balanced meals to individuals and families within the community. The Club is a long-term supporter of its local Foodbanks and makes a donation ahead of Christmas every year, in addition to year-round support, to assist those living in crisis.CLUB MAKES CHRISTMAS DONATION TO LOCAL FOODBANKS£5,000 every month on essential supplies to keep shelves stocked.Kevin also visited Tottenham Foodbank in November and helped volunteers prepare for an evening shift, continuing his work as an ambassador for homelessness charity The Passage. He said: “This is the second time I have been to the local Foodbank, and I have really enjoyed both visits. There are volunteers who are here every day, making sure families in our community are fed, so it is a privilege that as a Club and as individuals we can do our little bit to help at this time of year.” BEN DAVIES, CRISTIAN ROMERO, RODRIGO BENTANCUR AND BRENNAN JOHNSON

74THFCFORM GUIDE England boasted a 100 per cent record in qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, winning all eight of their UEFA Group K fixtures without conceding a single goal. The Three Lions sealed their place with a 5-0 win in Latvia in October and completed their faultless campaign with a 2-0 win over Serbia at Wembley Stadium and a 2-0 triumph in Albania in November.England face Croatia in Arlington in their opening 2026 World Cup Group L fixture on 17 June. Thomas Tuchel’s side then take on Ghana in Foxborough on 23 June and Panama in East Rutherford on 27 June.THE GAFFERFormer Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel was appointed as England head coach in October 2024, taking up the role in January 2025. Tuchel has a glittering CV, with major honours including a DFB-Pokal at Dortmund, two Ligue 1 titles with PSG, the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea and a Bundesliga success in 2022/23 with Bayern Munich.Including friendlies, Tuchel has overseen 10 matches as England head coach so far with nine victories and just one defeat - which came against Senegal on 10 June, 2025. That was England’s first-ever loss to an African side.Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Andy Greeves offers the lowdown on various nations that will be appearing at the tournament and explores their Tottenham Hotspur connections. 7 5THFCKEY PLAYEROur record goalscorer with 280 strikes in 435 appearances between 2011 and 2023, Harry Kane is also England’s leading marksman of all-time with his tally currently standing at 78 goals in 112 internationals. England’s top scorer in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, Kane netted eight times in as many appearances. The national team captain scored eight goals in 11 matches in his first two World Cup finals appearances in 2018 and 2022 and won the Golden Boot at the former tournament with six in six games. SPURS CONNECTIONSWe have supplied 80 players to the England national team over the years – more than any other club. Djed Spencebecame our 80th player to represent the Three Lions when he made his senior international debut against Serbia on 9 September, 2025. Our first player to represent the Three Lions was Vivian Woodward, who scored twice on his international debut in a 4-0 win for England over Ireland at Molineux on 14 February, 1903. Eddie Baily, Ted Ditchburn, Bill Nicholson and Alf Ramsey were our first players to be included in an England squad for a major tournament, as they were part of Walter Winterbottom’s 21-man party that travelled to Brazil for the 1950 FIFA World Cup. For quite some time, Jimmy Greaves was our highest goalscorer for England with 28 of his 44 goals for the Three Lions coming as a Spurs player. But Harry Kane surpassed that record with the first of his three strikes against Montenegro on 14 November, 2019 and ultimately scored 58 England goals in 84 appearances as a Spurs player. Kane is also our most capped England player, with Jermain Defoe second on the list with 49 of his 57 caps won to date coinciding with his two spells here in N17.The other players to win one or more senior caps for England while under contract with us – and not mentioned above – are:Clive Allen, Dele Alli, Wally Alsford, Darren Anderton, Nick Barmby, Darren Bent, David Bentley, Bert Bliss, Johnny Brooks, Sol Campbell, Michael Carrick, Steven Caulker, Martin Chivers, Harry Clarke, Tommy Clay, Ray Clemence, Ralph Coates, Peter Crouch, Michael Dawson, Eric Dier, Jimmy Dimmock, Terry Fenwick, Les Ferdinand, Anthony Gardner, Paul Gascoigne, Arthur Grimsdell, Willie Hall, Ron Henry, Glenn Hoddle, Steve Hodge, Tom Huddlestone, George Hunt, Jermaine Jenas, Ledley King, Cyril Knowles, Aaron Lennon, Gary Lineker, Jake Livermore, James Maddison, Gary Mabbutt, Ryan Mason, Les Medley, Alan Mullery, Maurice Norman, Frank Osbourne Scott Parker, Steve Perryman, Martin Peters, George Robb, Graham Roberts, Paul Robinson, Danny Rose, Arthur Rowe, Jimmy Seed, Teddy Sheringham, Tim Sherwood, Bert Smith, Bobby Smith, Dominic Solanke, Bert Sproston, Gary Stevens, Paul Stewart, Andros Townsend, Kieran Trippier, Chris Waddle, Fanny Walden, Ian Walker, Kyle Walker, Arthur Willis, Harry Winks and Jonathan Woodgate. WORLD CUP HISTORYEngland will be making their 17th World Cup finals appearance at the 2026 tournament, having first featured in the competition back in 1950.The Three Lions’ greatest World Cup moment came on 30 July, 1966 when our former player and then-England manager Sir Alf Ramsey guided his side to a 4-2 extra-time victory over West Germany in the final at Wembley Stadium. Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick in the game while future Spurs player, Martin Peters, was also on target.Since 1966, England have since reached the World Cup quarter-finals on seven occasions, progressing to the semi-finals in 1990 and 2018.

THFCIn a new feature for this season, Billy Shaw catches up with the players to remember the kits they wore on their first appearance for Spurs. Today, it’s on-loan striker Will Lankshear looking back…Our dark green third kit from last season was commonly associated with our successful UEFA Europa League run, memorably being used in the away legs of the quarter- and semi-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt and Bodo/Glimt.Few will forget Dominic Solanke’s ice-cool penalty in Germany or Pedro Porro’s cross-shot from out on the right flank in the arctic circle that made absolutely sure we were heading to Bilbao. But for Will Lankshear, it was an earlier game in the tournament that this strip is most recognisable for.A free-scoring centre-forward in our Under-21s’ Premier League 2 title-winning campaign the previous season, the youngster was elevated into the senior picture at the beginning of 2024/25 and made his competitive debut from the start as we went to Budapest to take on Ferencvaros on matchday two of the new-look league stage of the Europa League in October, 2024. Needless to say, the strip he wore that night holds happy memories for the striker, who has been on loan at Oxford United since the start of the current campaign.“I liked the colour of the kit, to be fair – I thought it was nice!” he smiled.“I remember us winning the game 2-1 and it being a really proud day for me and my family. I also remember I should have had a couple of goals that night!“I got the shirt signed by all the players in the matchday squad afterwards and it’s now in a frame in my house.”Will’s fellow Academy graduate Mikey Moore made his first start in that game, while Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall’s presence in the starting line-up meant it was the first time we’d started four teenagers in Europe since our UEFA Cup tie against Shakhtar Donetsk in February, 2009.MY DEBUT KITName: Will LankshearPosition: StrikerDebut: Ferencvaros away, Europa League (3 October, 2024)Age on debut: 19Debut kit: 2024/25 third kitIn detail: An all-dark green number, our third kit from last season featured a unique pattern on the shirts, which was inspired by our local heritage. This included subtle references to the ‘Seven Sisters’, a ring of seven trees that have stood in south Tottenham for hundreds of years. The crest saw our modern emblem positioned on top of a green shield that was something of a throwback to one of our retro logos, while the Nike swoosh was positioned vertically, in line with many third kit ranges the manufacturers produced for their clubs in 2024/25.Lankshear2024/25
