THFC NEWS 5 1 substitute Christian Eriksen scored the only goal of the game in the 91st minute to keep up our strong start to the season. FULHAM 1-2 SPURS - 20 JANUARY, 2019 Our 50th meeting with Fulham saw Harry Winks come to the rescue with a 93rd-minute winner at Craven Cottage. Without Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son in attack, Fernando Llorente was given his first league start of the season but unfortunately put us behind with an own goal in the first half. We responded well after the interval with Dele Alli’s pin-point header drawing us level on 51 minutes before Winks stooped to head in the stoppage-time winner from close range. We saved our most memorable late winner for Europe that season though, Lucas Moura the hat-trick hero with his 96th-minute winner against Ajax in May to see us through to the Champions League Final. 2016/17 SPURS 3-2 WEST HAM - 16 NOVEMBER, 2016 We continued our unbeaten start to the 2016/17 campaign amid high drama as Harry Kane netted a brace at the death in a pulsating encounter at White Hart Lane. The visitors twice led through Michail Antonio and Manuel Lanzini after Harry Winks had equalised just after the break, but a late show from Kane turned the contest on its head, first turning in Heung-Min Son’s cross on 89 minutes before converting from the penalty spot two minutes later. SWANSEA CITY 1-3 SPURS - 5 APRIL, 2017 As far as late comebacks go, this one is right up there as we scored three times from the 88th minute onwards to stage a remarkable turnaround at Swansea. Our former winger Wayne Routledge put the hosts in front on 11 minutes as the stubborn Swans defended diligently to protect their lead despite us dominating for long spells in the second half. Dele finally found the breakthrough with two minutes remaining before Heung-Min Son and Christian Eriksen scored in added time to complete the comeback in Wales. 2014/15 WEST HAM UNITED 0-1 SPURS - 16 AUGUST, 2014 In Mauricio Pochettino’s first season at the helm, our first win under the Argentine came in dramatic circumstances in the season opener against London rivals West Ham at Upton Park. Both sides finished the match with 10 men, first Kyle Naughton was sent off for a handball inside the box as Mark Noble missed the target from the resultant spot-kick, before James Collins was given his marching orders HARRY WINKS WINS IT AT FULHAM KANE HEROICS IN 2016

THFC NEWS 5 3 for a second bookable offence on 63 minutes. With the score locked goalless three minutes into stoppage time, up stepped debutant Eric Dier to fire home the winner to open his account for the Club and give Pochettino the perfect start to his tenure. ASTON VILLA 1-2 SPURS - 2 NOVEMBER, 2014 With six minutes of regulation time remaining at Villa Park, time was running out against 10-man Villa who led through Andreas Weimann’s 16th-minute strike despite having Christian Benteke sent off for a shove on Ryan Mason in the second half. But Nacer Chadli’s finish from a corner gave us hope in the closing stages before substitute Harry Kane earned all three points with a last-gasp deflected free-kick. HULL CITY 1-2 SPURS - 23 NOVEMBER, 2014 We travelled to Hull City looking for a much-needed boost after a patchy start to the campaign and it came in the form of another last-minute winner in November. Trailing 1-0 to Jake Livermore’s early strike, momentum shifted five minutes after half-time when Tigers midfielder Gaston Ramirez was sent off for an incident involving Jan Vertonghen before Harry Kane levelled just after the hour mark. As the clock ticked over into stoppage time, we left it late to make our numerical advantage count when Christian Eriksen fired in the winner from 20 yards to mark his 50th appearance in our colours in style. THFC WATC H YO U R L A N G UAG E 5 9 In a new series in this season’s matchday programme, we speak to a Spurs player either past or present to find out about the languages they speak and how that translates onto the pitch. In focus today, vice-captain CRISTIAN ROMERO… NAME: CRISTIAN ROMERO AGE: 25 BORN: CÓRDOBA, ARGENTINA LANGUAGES SPOKEN: SPANISH, ITALIAN, ENGLISH How and why did you learn your languages? “Spanish is my first language and then I learned Italian back in Argentina, before I went to Genoa. I had about a month of learning the language in Argentina before I went there, then when I moved over, I found it much easier to learn as I went along. Italian is quite similar to Spanish in some ways, so for me it was very easy to pick it up. “Since I came to Spurs I have been learning English. For me, nowadays, I understand everything my teammates say and I can relate with them, but of course when I have interviews I still prefer to do them in Spanish or Italian because I have a better grasp of those languages compared to English. Day to day, speaking with my team-mates is something I find comes naturally now, but I am still learning all the time.” Which other language do you wish you could speak? “I would choose to speak French if I could. I get on really well with Hugo (Lloris) – he is such a knowledgeable person as well as a player. So, if I could speak French with him, I think I’d be able to relate with him much more than I do now. I speak some French with him but it isn’t at a high enough level to get to know him more. So I’d say French if I could choose just one language to learn next.” Watch your language DEFENDER DEFENSA OFFSIDE POSICIÓN ADELANTADA CROSSBAR TRAVESAÑO STRIKER DELANTERO REFEREE ARBITRO AWAY KIT EQUIPACIÓN VISITANTE CLUB SHOP TIENDA OFICIAL SUBSTITUTE CAMBIO/VARIANTE FOOTBALL PHRASES IN SPANISH ‘PARLEZ-VOUS FRANCAIS, CRISTIAN?’ How does Spanish and Italian differ from English when you’re on the pitch? “Well, I think that the three languages are obviously quite different, but as soon as I get on the pitch it’s more or less all in English and, to be honest, I don’t find it much different when I play. “As players, we all communicate together in English. Of course, if one of my team-mates nearby is a Spanish speaker – like when Pedro is on my right– we speak Spanish together, but with the others, it’s always in English and there are no problems.” WITH CRISTIAN ROMERO

6 8 G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . THFC WELCOME TO THE CLUB Play Now
THFC G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . 6 9 WHO WHO KNOWS YOU BEST? I mean, I have to say my mum. It’s quite a cliché answer but it’s true! She’s known me the longest! I have a great relationship with her and my dad. They still live in Tottenham, close to the stadium, they can see it from their bathroom window! WHO HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR CAREER SO FAR? Perry Suckling has had a huge influence on me. When I was about six or seven, I was a mascot for the first team at a game away to West Ham, Perry was the goalkeeping coach at the time. He didn’t know me, but after the warm-ups he gave me a warm-up jumper which I took home. It was only a few years later that I came for a trial at the club and he was Head of Goalkeeping for the Academy. I ended up signing and he has basically coached me all the way through my career until last season really. Even when he went to QPR, we stayed in touch. He’s a very caring and selfless person, a lovely guy. W O R D S B Y J O N R AY N E R GETTING TO KNOW... alfie whiteman It’s time to find out a little bit more about our players in our new feature. Answering our questions in today’s issue is goalkeeper ALFIE WHITEMAN, a boyhood Spurs fan who has been with us since the age of 10. “Sonny has a great sense of humour and brings a lot of positive energy to the dressing room” WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO SEE IN CONCERT? I’d love to see Radiohead, I think they’d be great. But if I could choose anyone at all, I’d probably say Al Green. There are loads, it’s a long list and people like Nina Simone and Miles Davis at the height of the jazz scene would have been incredible. And I would rather have seen them perform at a small intimate club than a big venue. WHO IS THE BIGGEST JOKER IN THE SQUAD? Now that he’s our captain, maybe he’s calmed down a little but Sonny has a great sense of humour and brings a lot of positive energy to the dressing room, as everyone around the Club knows. MAURICIO POCHETTINO GAVE OLIVER HIS CHANCE ALFIE HAS BEEN WITH THE CLUB SINCE HE WAS A CHILD RADIOHEAD WOULD BE A DREAM LIVE PERFORMANCE
7 0 G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . THFC WHERE WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN YOU NEED TO RELAX? I like to go the cinema by myself and I did it just the other night. If I need to de-stress and just unwind, I’ll go out, maybe grab some food first and go to the cinema on a little solo date. WHERE DID YOU MAKE YOUR PROFESSIONAL DEBUT? I made my professional debut here at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a Europa League tie against Ludogorets in November 2020. Unfortunately it was during the pandemic but still great to make my debut for the club I’ve supported all my life. WHERE DO YOU PREFER TO GO – BEACH OR CITY? I’d have to say beach, or something sort of nature related because I’ve grown up in the city so it’s good to escape sometimes and go somewhere different. That’s what I really enjoyed when I was on loan in Sweden, because I spent time living in a cabin in the woods by a lake and really embraced that slower pace of life. “The training ground is a place where you can work on specific things but during a game is when it’s all put to the test” ALFIE COMES ON FOR HIS SENIOR DEBUT AGAINST LUDOGORETS IN 2020 WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU CAN MOST IMPROVE YOURSELF AS A PLAYER? It would probably have to be on the match pitch. The training ground is a place where you can work on specific things but during a game is when it’s all put to the test. That’s when you have to make those split-second decisions and you have added pressure of playing in front of fans and with points up for grabs. HOW HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR EGGS IN THE MORNING? I have the same breakfast every morning – a ham omelette with honey on it. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU PLAYED FOR YOUR COUNTRY AT ALL LEVELS? I made my debut when I was 15 for England Under-17s and I’ve played 17 times for various England youth teams since. HOW OFTEN DO YOU FALL ASLEEP IN FRONT OF THE TV? I’ve been doing a lot of rehab recently following
THFC G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . 7 1 my injury which has involved a lot of swimming, gym sessions, bike sessions and I’ve been getting home exhausted. So when I get in and sit down, I almost instantly fall asleep – TV on or not! HOW MANY PETS DO YOU HAVE? I’m moving into a new place soon and I’ve actually just got two kittens which will be coming with me, although they’re still too young at the moment. At the family home, there are two cats – Stanley and Oscar – and a dog called Benji as well. WHAT WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ICE CREAM FLAVOUR? I might go a bit niche here – Little Moons mochi ice cream is amazing, especially the passionfruit flavour. And I also really like the dark chocolate sorbet made by a company called Hackney Gelato. WHAT WAS THE FIRST FOOTBALL SHIRT YOU OWNED? That would have been a Kappa Spurs kit, the stretchy one from 2005/06, royal blue with a yellow collar, yellow sleeve cuffs and yellow trim down the side. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TV SERIES OF ALL-TIME? I’d have to say The Sopranos, a superb series. Tony Soprano is such a fantastic character. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST POSITION IN FOOTBALL? To be honest I started playing in goal from a very young age. Maybe I played outfield when I was six or seven and it was six-a-side football, but from about the age of eight I was in goal as I realised I was a better keeper than I was an outfield player! I just enjoyed it more as well and as soon as I came here at about 10, that was it – I was a goalkeeper. WHEN WHEN DID YOU LAST GET YOUR HAIRCUT? I’m cutting my own hair at the moment and it was two days ago. A buzz cut all over and I probably do it every week and a half right now. WHEN WAS YOUR BIGGEST SETBACK? There have been a few down the years but it was pretty tough getting injured this pre-season. I broke my ankle, tore the ligaments and needed surgery and it’s been the most significant injury of my career. It’s never nice to get injured just when a new manager has come in and you’ve done a lot of hard work in pre-season as you try to impress and then have to start again from scratch, so this has probably been my biggest setback. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WORE A TIE? I’ve been to a couple of weddings over the last few years but didn’t wear a tie, so I think the last time was probably when I was at secondary school, which I left in 2015! WHEN DOES YOUR ALARM GO OFF IN THE MORNING? It goes off at 6.50am and I have a Lumie alarm which gradually lights up the room. I might snooze it a few times and then get up around 7.15. TONY SOPRANO IS A FAVOURITE THE 2005/06 KAPPA KIT WAS THE FIRST ALFIE OWNED

THFC my favourite... M Y FAVO U R I T E , , , 8 1 Continuing our new feature for the new season, as we ask our supporters about some of their favourite memories of following Spurs. Today’s fan in the hotseat has been supporting us since 1958 and is attending this afternoon’s game against Liverpool… MY FAVOURITE GAME When we beat Liverpool 4-1 at Wembley in October 2017, with goals from Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Dele Alli. Even when they play badly, Liverpool nearly always seem to do enough to get a result, but not that day. MY FAVOURITE PLAYER Jimmy Greaves, although unfortunately I never managed to see him play live as I lived in Northern Ireland. Who could forget the day he beat five Manchester United defenders and slotted the ball home in a 5-1 home win on 16 October 1965. NAME: KEN BREAKEY AGE: 70 MY FAVOURITE GOAL Back in December 2019, I managed to get a ticket on the ticket exchange and was sat behind the Burnley dugout across from where Heung-Min Son picked up the ball and scored the goal of the season in a 5-0 home win. MY FAVOURITE SPURS KIT It’s hard to beat our traditional white jersey with either white or navy shorts. MY FAVOURITE AWAY DAY I did manage to live near London before I returned home but we always had a bad record whenever I attended a game at Everton until we beat them 6-2 on 23 December 2018, which was one of my favourite away games. That is closely followed by the 3-1 victory at Swansea City on 5 April 2017, with three very late goals from Dele, Son and Christian Eriksen. Want to feature on this page? Just send us your detailed answers to the five questions above and we’ll do our best to include you!
