Spurs v Luton March 2024

Spurs v Luton March 2024

THFC WATC H YO U R L A N G UAG E 5 1 In a new series in this season’s matchday programme, we speak to a Spurs player either past or present to find out about the languages they speak and how that translates onto the pitch. In focus today, forward MANOR SOLOMON. NAME: MANOR SOLOMON AGE: 24 BORN: KFAR SABA, ISRAEL LANGUAGES SPOKEN: HEBREW, ENGLISH, PORTUGUESE How and why did you learn your languages? “My first language is Hebrew, my second is English and my third is Portuguese – I also understand a bit of Spanish because of my knowledge of Portuguese and I understand a bit of Russian as well, but not too much. “For English, we start to learn it as a second language in school, maybe from second grade, then you just keep learning as you use it. As a footballer, when you play abroad you get used to it even more. “When I arrived in Ukraine to play for Shakhtar Donetsk, in the team there were Brazilians and Ukrainians and the technical staff were Portuguese… in the beginning I spoke English but then I started to learn Portuguese so I could better understand everyone – also because a lot of the attackers were Brazilian, they spoke Portuguese so it was helpful for me to learn. I had some lessons and then with time I got better. I was there for three years so I was able to speak Portuguese more and more, and now I can speak Portuguese here with Emerson and Richy.” Which other language do you wish you could speak? “Maybe Spanish, because I would like to know it better. As I said, I can understand it quite a bit already but it would be great to learn it properly. Watch your language FOOTBALL: KADUREGEL MANAGER: ME’AMEN STADIUM: ITSTADION OFFSIDE: NIVDAL CENTRE CIRCLE: EGOL HA’EMTZA YELLOW CARD: KARTIS TZAHOV ATTACKING MIDFIELDER: KASHAR HATKAFA INJURY: P’TZIYAH FOOTBALL PHRASES IN HEBREW If not, maybe French, because I don’t speak that language yet.” How does Hebrew differ from English when you’re on the pitch in a game? “There are some differences. If you have an opponent behind you coming to close you down, instead of a warning like ‘man on’, you would tell your teammate to ‘give a touch’, so you’d tell them to pass it rather than warning them that someone was coming. Sometimes you’d say ‘be careful’ in that situation as well.” WITH MANOR SOLOMON

VILLA’S WINNER... Ricky Villa rifles home a stunning goal to give us a narrow victory over Luton Town when the two teams met in the fourth round of the Milk Cup back in December 1982. The Argentine struck 20 minutes into the second half, hitting a magnificent 30-yard screamer which gave Hatters goalkeeper Jake Findlay no chance, although it was Findlay and our own number one Ray Clemence who were the stars of the show as they made a string of top stops throughout the night at White Hart Lane. Findlay denied Graham Roberts, Steve Archibald, Gary O’Reilly and Villa while Clem produced a wonderful save to claw away David Moss’s fierce freekick before tipping over Brian Stein’s effort just before half-time. Luton, managed by our future boss David Pleat at the time, were enjoying their first season back in the English top flight since 1974/75 and went on to establish themselves in the First Division before relegation in 1991/92 – the last season before the Premier League was formed. They certainly gave us a tough game in this clash but ultimately it was Villa who decided the outcome. On the front cover of the matchday programme for the game and named captain on the night in the absence of Steve Perryman, he led by example with his wonderful winner. THFC FROM THE ARCHIVES 5 3

6 8 G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . THFC

THFC G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . 6 9 WHO WHO WAS YOUR FOOTBALL IDOL GROWING UP? I started playing at Stuttgart when I was young and so my idol then was Mario Gomez, who was the striker there at the time. Stuttgart won the league with him up front and he scored a lot of goals to help them be successful. WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE ACTOR? That is quite difficult. I like the new generation like Tom Holland but also the older guys like The Rock and Kevin Hart. It is tough as there are a lot of good actors out there. W O R D S B Y J O N R AY N E R GETTING TO KNOW... timo werner Continuing our feature where we find out more about our players on and off the pitch. This week, we’re getting to know our German forward TIMO WERNER… WHO IS THE MOST STYLISH PLAYER AT SPURS? A lot of players here have a good style but Madders would definitely be up there! WHO MAKES YOU LAUGH? Fraser is a funny guy, he’s a real joker. I think we have a lot of guys who are sometimes loud and like to have a laugh but Fraser is the main one. WHERE WHERE IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO VISIT? I like America a lot, I’ve been three or four times to Los Angeles and New York, both very nice. But somewhere I would like to go is Australia and New Zealand. It’s difficult when you go to places as a footballer, you don’t get to see and do much so I would like to go to these places as a tourist. MAURICIO POCHETTINO THE ROCK IS A TIMO FAVOURITE GAVE OLIVER HIS CHANCE

7 0 G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . THFC WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN YOU NEED TO RELAX? Good question. I like to just relax at home but also it’s nice sometimes to go out and play a bit of golf. If I go on holiday, I like to go to Majorca. WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO VISIT IN LONDON? I like Battersea Park a lot and also the centre of the city, areas like Kensington and Mayfair. WHERE DO YOU KEEP YOUR MEDALS/SHIRTS/ MEMORABILIA? When I was a child, I had all my stuff in my room, but these days I don’t really have much out on display, only the important pieces. I have got a duplicate of the Champions League trophy in my house and the medal as well. I have shirts too but not on the walls, maybe later when my house is finished I will put them up. HOW HOW DO YOU OVERCOME PERSONAL SETBACKS IN YOUR CAREER? There have been so many! In the end you do get used to dealing with setbacks and you have your way of coping with them. I think it’s important to not look at the media too much if you are going through a tough time and also don’t blame yourself too much. In our business it is usual to have ups and downs and this is something you have to try to deal with. HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR EGGS IN THE MORNING? I like an omelette with ham, peppers and sometimes onions. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU PLAYED FOR YOUR COUNTRY’S SENIOR SIDE? I have played for Germany 57 times. It is always a proud moment and a pleasure to play for your country. It’s something that only happens a few times each season which makes it more special as well. HOW WOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR PAST, IF YOU COULD? Honestly, I would leave it like this. I’ve had good moments and bad moments and you can only learn from the bad times. A life with only good moments would make it even worse if you did have a bad spell. I think ups and downs help you to grow as a person, that’s why I wouldn’t change anything. TIMO DURING ONE OF HIS 57 APPEARANCES FOR GERMANY “I have got a duplicate of the Champions League trophy in my house”

THFC G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . 7 1 WHAT WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO LEARN? Probably languages. I’m a bit better at English now and I think my teachers at school would be proud of me, but I would love to learn Spanish as well as it is a language that you could use a lot around the world. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL? For me it would be schnitzel with fries. WHAT WERE YOUR FIRST PAIR OF FOOTBALL BOOTS? I think it was a pair of the Nike Total 90s but it was a long time ago! WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR SPURS DEBUT? It was a very good moment for me, in a big stadium at Old Trafford against Manchester United. It was really nice, I enjoyed it a lot and it’s always great when you can pull on the new jersey for the first time and play with your new team-mates. WHEN WHEN DID YOU LAST GET YOUR HAIRCUT? Two weeks ago now I think – I have to go and get it done this week! WHEN DID YOU LAST VISIT YOUR HOME TOWN? Quite a long time ago now, a few months probably since I was last in Stuttgart. My parents have come to visit me the last few times so I didn’t need to go and my friends there are all working so if I did go, there wouldn’t be too much for me to do, so it has been a while. WHEN ARE YOU AT YOUR HAPPIEST? When I’m out there on the pitch playing football and when I am with my family and friends. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WORE A TIE? I’m not sure if I have ever worn a tie! We didn’t wear them at school because we didn’t have uniforms, we could go in casual clothes, and when I have been at weddings and things, I just left my shirt open at the neck. So, never! MAKING HIS SPURS DEBUT IN THE 2-2 DRAW AT OLD TRAFFORD IN JANUARY “it’s always great when you can pull on the new jersey for the first time and play with your new team-mates”

THFC my favourite... M Y FAVO U R I T E . . . 8 1 Continuing our new feature for this season, as we ask our supporters to pick out their Spurs favourites on a variety of subjects… MY FAVOURITE GAME It’s not often you get to see your team score nine goals in a Premier League match, so when it happens it tends to stick in the memory! That 9-1 win against Wigan in 2009 is my favourite game, helped by the fact I was in the South Stand that day where most of the goals were scored. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many goals scored in such a short space of time and Jermain Defoe’s five goals just added to the craziness of the game! MY FAVOURITE PLAYER It has to be Gareth Bale. One of the few players Spurs have had during my time as a fan who could genuinely win a game on his own. When he got on the ball, it always felt like he was going to do something special and some of his goals were just outstanding. Hard to believe he had such a shocking record in those early days with us! MY FAVOURITE GOAL I’m going to choose a Bale goal and there are plenty to pick from. His first from his hat-trick away to Inter Milan is incredible by the way, just go back NAME: SAM MEADS  AGE: 34 and watch it again, a ridiculously good run and even better finish. But for me, the winner against West Ham at Upton Park is my favourite – what a strike and what a feeling when it flew in! MY FAVOURITE SPURS KIT I have such fond memories of our first Champions League campaign in 2010/11 and my favourite shirt is the home one from that season, the one with the navy blue across the top of the chest and shoulders. It just reminds me of Bale, Modric, Crouch, Rafa and that Champions League adventure. MY FAVOURITE AWAY DAY Away trips are few and far between for me but I was there at Old Trafford back in 2012 when we finally beat Manchester United away! I think it was 22 or 23 years since we’d beaten them there so I didn’t have too much hope that we were going to win that day, which made it all the more sweeter when we did. My mates were desperate for me to go away to Liverpool and Chelsea that season too! Want to feature on this page? Just send us your detailed answers to the five questions above and we’ll do our best to include you!
