THFC CLARETS IN THE CUP 5 1 never got the credit he deserved. He was immense in that final.” Victory was secured with nine minutes of the match remaining when a Terry Medwin shot was handled on the line by Clarets defender Tommy Cummings and Danny Blanchflower confidently stepped up to confirm our second FA Cup triumph in successive seasons. “It’s been described as ‘The Chessboard Final’ but when you’re playing, I don’t think you’re in a position to judge whether or not a match is a good watch,” explained Maurice. “All I would say is that it was a very even encounter and, on another day, the result could have been different. Despite us winning 3-1, there was little between the teams.” Burnley finally had their revenge in the 1962/63 season when they thumped us 3-0 at White Hart Lane – the holders knocked out in the third round. The match was postponed twice because of freezing conditions and when it finally went ahead, it was on a Wednesday afternoon. The playing surface had to be cleared following a snowstorm in the morning and kick-off was in the afternoon rather than the evening because of a restriction on electricity supplies. Nevertheless, 30,000 fans still turned out to unfortunately witness our first FA Cup defeat since February 1960. The match was even but turned either side of half-time when Gordon Harris put Burnley ahead and then Dave Mackay put through his own net. Andy Lochhead completed the scoring. “I try not to think too much about the defeats,” laughed Cliff. “I do remember the snow and the own goal, but otherwise it was one of those games to forget! “But Tottenham and Burnley was the match that people wanted to see,” he added. “They were always fantastic occasions.” DANNY BLANCHFLOWER HOLDS ALOFT THE FA CUP AFTER OUR 1962 WIN OVER BURNLEY “Tottenham and Burnley was the match that people wanted to see” — cliff jones SNOW IS CLEARED OFF THE WHITE HART LANE PITCH AHEAD OF OUR 1963 CLASH

THFC WATC H YO U R L A N G UAG E 5 9 In a new series in this season’s matchday programme, we speak to a Spurs player either past or present to find out about the languages they speak and how that translates onto the pitch. In focus tonight, defender EMERSON ROYAL… NAME: EMERSON ROYAL AGE: 24 BORN: SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL LANGUAGES SPOKEN: PORTUGUESE, SPANISH, ENGLISH How and why did you learn your languages? “Portuguese is my main language from back in Brazil and I have used that for my whole life. Because of the similarities, I was able to listen and pick up Spanish quite easily. I didn’t need to have lessons or use a tutor for Spanish, I just gradually learned it over time. “I began to speak Spanish more often when I joined Real Betis – that was about four-and-a-half years ago. It’s no problem for me to speak and understand Spanish. I am fluent. “I didn’t speak much English when I first came here to Spurs but I worked hard to learn it. I am still learning but I am lucky that I am able to communicate properly with all my team-mates and the staff, so I don’t have any problems.” Which other language do you wish you could speak? “French! I like the idea of being able to speak that language in the future. But Watch your language RIGHT-BACK: LATERAL DIREITO CENTRE-BACK: ZAGUEIRO TACKLE: CORTE PASS: PASSE PENALTY AREA: GRANDE ÁREA HIT THE POST: ACERTAR A TRAVE HEAD COACH: TREINADOR TOUCHLINE: LINHAS DO CAMPO FOOTBALL PHRASES IN PORTUGUESE for now I want to continue to work on my English.” How does Portuguese differ from English when you’re on the pitch in a game? “It’s not too different, because you can still describe everything during the game and communicate with your team-mates about positions and passes. I can speak Portuguese and Spanish with some of my team-mates on the pitch if I need to, but even in English there is no problem.” WITH E M E R S O N R OYA L

THFC OPPOSITION VIEW 6 9 back in 1957, when then Third Division Bournemouth & Boscombe – as they were known – humbled us 3-1 at Dean Court. Terry Medwin netted our goal to make it 2-1 after Ollie Norris and Stan Newsham had scored for the home side, who wrapped up the famous win thanks to a Nelson Stiffle goal shortly after the interval. BRENTFORD 10.01.46 Third Round Brentford 2-0 Spurs The return of the FA Cup following the end of the Second World War didn’t last long for us as we lost to Brentford. For the only time in the competition’s history, all matches from the first round to the sixth round were played over two legs. After a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane, with Ron Burgess and Albert Hall on target, we lost 2-0 at Griffin Park to exit 4-2 on aggregate. BRIGHTON 05.04.22 Fourth Round Spurs 3-1 Brighton Harry Kane netted twice as we defeated fellow ARSENAL 04.01.14 Third Round Arsenal 2-0 Spurs A rare north London derby in the FA Cup ended in defeat at the Emirates 10 years ago, as goals from Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky gave the Gunners the win. ASTON VILLA 08.01.17 Third Round Spurs 2-0 Aston Villa Aston Villa were in the Championship when we last met in the FA Cup during our last season at White Hart Lane. Ben Davies scored his first goal in our colours and Heung-Min Son added a second to see us through to round four. 7 0 OPPOSITION VIEW THFC Premier League outfit Brighton here just two years ago at the fourth round stage. Our current midfielder Yves Bissouma pulled one back for the Seagulls before Solly March put through his own net. BURNLEY 14.01.15 Third Round Spurs 4-2 Burnley We last met Burnley in the competition at this stage nine years ago, progressing after a replay. We drew 1-1 at Turf Moor before recovering from a nightmare start to win 4-2 at the Lane. The Clarets led 2-0 after eight minutes through Marvin Sordell and Ross Wallace before goals from Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Vlad Chiriches and Danny Rose saw us through. CHELSEA 22.04.17 Semi-Final Chelsea 4-2 Spurs Semi-final disappointment at Wembley Stadium in our last FA Cup meeting with Chelsea. Harry Kane cancelled out Willian’s earlier opener and Dele Alli netted after Willian scored again before goals from Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic ended our hopes of reaching the final. CRYSTAL PALACE 27.01.19 Fourth Round Crystal Palace 2-0 Spurs We suffered an early FA Cup exit five years ago with this defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park as firsthalf goals from Connor Wickham and former Spur Andros Townsend gave the Eagles the win. EVERTON 10.02.21 Fifth Round Everton 5-4 Spurs Our last FA Cup tie with Everton was a crazy ninegoal affair with the Toffees edging us out. Davinson Sanchez put us ahead but we were 3-1 down after Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson all scored. We drew level through Erik Lamela and Sanchez’s second while Richarlison and Harry Kane traded goals to make it 4-4 and send it to extra time, where Bernard netted the winner for the hosts. FULHAM 19.02.17 Fifth Round Fulham 0-3 Spurs Harry Kane’s fifth hat-trick for Spurs and his second of the 2016/17 season saw us reach the quarter-finals with a comfortable win over then-Championship side Fulham at Craven Cottage. LIVERPOOL Sixth Round 11.03.95 Liverpool 1-2 Spurs A famous victory at Anfield as Gerry Francis’ side book their place in the last four. Robbie Fowler fired the home side ahead before Teddy Sheringham scored an exquisite equaliser and we recorded a rare away win over the Reds when Jurgen Klinsmann danced through to fire home with just 90 seconds remaining. HARRY KANE HIT A BRACE AGAINST BRIGHTON IN 2022
THFC OPPOSITION VIEW 7 1 LUTON TOWN 28.01.33 Fourth Round Luton 2-0 Spurs We have to go back 91 years for the last time we faced Luton in an FA Cup tie! Incredibly this was the first time we’d played the Hatters in any senior competition and remains our only FA Cup clash against them. We lost the game 2-0 against the then Division Three South side at Kenilworth Road, in a season when we won promotion from Division Two. MANCHESTER CITY 04.02.04 Fourth Round Replay Spurs 3-4 Manchester City One of our most disappointing FA Cup ties in recent memory, as we threw away a three-goal lead against 10-men City to exit the competition. Goals from Ledley King, Robbie Keane and Christian Ziege put us in control at the break, with Joey Barton receiving a red card as the teams left the pitch. But City stormed back, scoring four unanswered goals to achieve what had seemed an unlikely win. MANCHESTER UNITED 21.04.18 Semi-Final Manchester Utd 2-1 Spurs Our last appearance at the semi-final stage ended in defeat to Manchester United at Wembley Stadium. The national venue was our temporary home at the time and we’d beaten the Red Devils 2-0 there in the league three months earlier. In the cup clash, Dele Alli put us ahead but goals from Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera saw United reach the final. NEWCASTLE UNITED 13.03.05 Sixth Round Newcastle United 1-0 Spurs A fifth-minute strike from Patrick Kluivert was enough to give Newcastle the win the last time we met the Magpies in the FA Cup in 2005. We created a host of chances but found goalkeeper Shay Given in inspired form at St James’ Park. NOTTINGHAM FOREST 02.03.05 Fifth Round Replay Nottm Forest 0-3 Spurs The round before our exit to Newcastle (opposite) saw us progress past Nottingham Forest, our last meeting with Forest in the competition. The Championship side held us to a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane but there was no slip up in the replay at the City Ground as goals from Noe Pamarot, Robbie Keane and Mido saw us safely through. SHEFFIELD UNITED 01.03.23 Fifth Round Sheffield Utd 1-0 Spurs Our last FA Cup clash with the Blades came just last season, as they caused an upset to reach the quarter-finals. United, who were chasing promotion from the Championship at the time, broke the deadlock through Iliman Ndiaye with 11 minutes left and held on to progress. WEST HAM UNITED 11.03.01 Sixth Round West Ham 2-3 Spurs A derby thriller saw us reach the semi-finals in our last FA Cup clash with West Ham United back in 2001. Sergei Rebrov netted twice and Gary Doherty was also on target at Upton Park, with Stuart Pearce and Svetoslav Todorov scoring for the home side, with our goalkeeper Neil Sullivan making a string of saves to keep the Hammers at bay. WOLVES 07.02.96 Fourth Round Replay Wolves 0-2 Spurs We needed a replay to overcome Wolves in the fourth round of the 1995/95 FA Cup campaign. The second tier side, then managed by the late Graham Taylor, drew 1-1 at White Hart Lane but we finished the job at Molineux as goals from Ronny Rosenthal and Teddy Sheringham ensured a safe passage to the round five for Gerry Francis’ team. THFC my favourite... M Y FAVO U R I T E , , , 8 1 Continuing our new feature for this season, as we ask our supporters to pick out their Spurs favourites on a variety of subjects. Tonight’s fan has been a supporter for the last 18 years… MY FAVOURITE GAME It was on May 5, 2010 – our fixture against Manchester City at the Etihad. Peter Crouch scoring that late header, bringing Champions League football to White Hart Lane for the first time. I was so excited that night, I broke my ankle celebrating that goal. MY FAVOURITE PLAYER Jermain Defoe, he is my hero. He was one of the reasons I started supporting this great club. Absolute legend. He used to light up White Hart Lane with his magic feet and some breathtaking finishing. I will always be grateful for his service to my club. NAME: NITHIN PRASAD AGE: 30 MY FAVOURITE GOAL My favourite goal has to be Crouch scoring that late header against Manchester City in 2010, which took us into the Champions League. I get goosebumps when I revisit that night. MY FAVOURITE SPURS KIT As a kit collector, I have around 100 jerseys, but my favourite has to be the 1997 home kit made by Pony, such a beautiful jersey which captured the essence of our club. MY FAVOURITE AWAY DAY My favourite away day was the trip to Chelsea back in 2016, the Battle of the Bridge. The tension before the game, the long anticipation, singing my heart out, pure adrenaline.
