back of a couple of difficult seasons. It’s early
days, there’s a lot of work to be done, relation-
ships to be built, but I’m positive about where
things are at, positive about the work we’ve put
in so far.

“Everyone is just at the beginning of this new
journey with the manager, and we are still trying
to build. We are constantly trying to improve,
trying to build ourselves more and more into
what he sees his team as and obviously that
takes time. In the league, we have got off to
a great start and now we just need to try to
maintain that momentum and do as well as we
can. Obviously, we are trying our best to win
every game and constantly trying to improve our
performances and the way we play.

“The changes breed new ideas and new ways
of working and then on top of that, I think the
massive difference and something that has

really energised everyone as well is having the THFC
fans back.”

For Eric, the return of supporters powered us
over the line in our opening day Premier League
triumph over Manchester City. After playing
the vast majority of our games over the last 18
months behind closed doors, to have over 58,000
fans back inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was
so important for the players – and something
that had a real impact on the team.
18

Eric Dier

THFC “It was the moment that everybody had been
waiting for – to have a full stadium again – and
I think for us, as players, you saw that in the
performance, what it meant, and you saw what it
meant to the fans,” he smiled. “It was an amazing
experience against City, to win and play the way
we did. For that to be the first game with fans
back was a great moment for everyone.

“I think my favourite moment of the whole day
was actually leaving the stadium in the car after
the game. Obviously, we’re not quite yet back to
normal, but there was a real sense of normality
about it where you could see fans and families all
walking home after the match.

“That kind of atmosphere before and after the
game, just seeing things happen outside of the
stadium like programmes being sold again, food
being bought, the atmosphere. It was just really
nice to see. As a player, seeing that on the streets
around the stadium before and after the game, it
definitely affects you whereas, over the last 18
months, we haven’t had that influence.”

The 1-0 victory over Manchester City marked
the perfect start to Nuno Espirito Santo’s tenure
as our Head Coach – we then followed that up
with a second Premier League win in as many
games as we overcame his former club Wolves
via the same scoreline on Sunday afternoon. It
is still of course early days under Nuno, but Eric
admits working under the man from Sao Tome
and Principe has been very enjoyable so far.

“We had a small idea (of what to expect from
Nuno) having played against his Wolves side
many times over the last few years, so we defi-
nitely had an idea about his teams and certain
things about them,” the England international
explained. “But he has had a very positive impact
on me. I’ve really enjoyed working with him and all
of his coaching staff, having a full pre-season and
getting to know him and what he wants in that
time. He is definitely bringing his ideas of what he
wants his team to be and is trying to implement
them. I’m really enjoying the way he does that and
the way we are working on a day-to-day basis
with all of his staff. It has been great so far.”

Tonight, our journey under Nuno continues
with the second leg of our Europa Conference
League play-off tie against Pacos de Ferreira – a
side Eric faced in his time in Portugal playing
for Sporting Lisbon. And we have it all to do
against the Primeira Liga outfit this evening at
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a 1-0 deficit
needing to be overturned following last week’s
defeat in Portugal.

“Our ambition is to always try to win,” the
27-year-old stated. “Every team is difficult
for different reasons and there are always
obstacles to overcome in every match and, with
Pacos tonight, it will be no different. They are a
side which has changed a lot since I last played
them – it’s been a long time. We just have to do
our best to win every game.”

UNDER THE
RAINBOW

On this day in 2009, our players ran out to
this stunning scene as we prepared to take on
Doncaster Rovers at their Keepmoat Stadium in
the second round of the Carling Cup.

It was the last time that we played a game on
26 August and the omens are promising as we ran
out 5-1 victors in south Yorkshire to continue our
bright start to the 2009/10 campaign.

We’d already beaten Liverpool, Hull City and
West Ham United in our opening three Premier
League matches so travelled to Doncaster full
of confidence and that was not misplaced as we
progressed thanks to a convincing win.

Two goals in the opening 11 minutes got the ball
rolling, Tom Huddlestone opening the scoring before
Jamie O’Hara doubled our lead, with Peter Crouch
adding a third before half-time. David Bentley
made it 4-0 on 52 minutes before Doncaster pulled
one back through a Martin Woods penalty, while
Roman Pavlyuchenko sealed the win with our fifth on
69 minutes.

Three minutes later, Doncaster-born Danny Rose
came off the bench for his Spurs debut and with 18
minutes remaining, young goalkeeper David Button –
currently with West Brom - replaced Carlo Cudicini in
goal for what would be his only taste of competitive
first-team football in our colours.
