THFC HEART
AND MIND
At the start of a busy month for
us with 10 games in the next 31
days, PIERRE-EMILE HOJBJERG
discusses the requirement of
desire, the impact of Brentford
boss Thomas Frank on his
development and his love for the
festive period.
By Liam Carson
L ast time out here at Tottenham Hotspur
Stadium, a sheer desire to win saw us
home against Leeds United – a resolve
typified by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Having fallen behind to Marcelo Bielsa’s side
in a difficult first half, a renewed approach in the
second period – one of grit and determination –
saw us turn the game on its head come full time
to earn Antonio Conte his first Premier League
win as our Head Coach.
Pierre was the man to get us level, guiding
the ball home just short of the hour mark for his
third goal of the season already. Notably, though,
there were no celebrations from the Denmark
international after his strike, just a gesture to
his team-mates, instructing them to get the ball
back to the centre circle as quickly as possible so
they could go and finish the job in hand.
Just over 10 minutes later, we did just that,
with Sergio Reguilon finding the target – this
time, the Dane did celebrate, and the relief was
palpable.
After the game, our midfield general spoke
about the importance of desire. For Pierre, it
is a foundation in his mentality, something his
psyche is built on. He is an ambitious man, not
just on the pitch but off it, and that is what drives
him in his life. He also takes great care in his work,
going the extra mile on and off the pitch, putting
everything he has into all that he takes on.
Despite having only been with us in north

“I’ve always said it. I’m a very ambitious

which is the main target. Always try to give your
best and, with that, I have hope and I am confi-
dent that big things can be achieved.”
Someone who has clearly made an impact on
Pierre in his journey so far in his life is the man
who will oppose Antonio Conte in the dugout this
evening – Brentford boss Thomas Frank.
The Danish coach began his career as a
manager coaching the Danish youth teams, and
as Pierre rose through the ranks in Denmark’s
national sides, so did Frank, coaching our number
five at three different age groups.
“I’VE ALWAYS
BEEN PROUD
OF WHO I AM,
AND I ALWAYS
HAVE DONE
EVERYTHING
WITH GREAT
DESIRE”
The pair have crossed paths plenty of times
since, such as last January, when we hosted the
Bees for the Carabao Cup semi-final – the pair
catching up once more after the game.
That match marked a piece of history for the
south London side with it being the furthest they
had ever progressed in the competition. Later on
that season, they then went on to secure a place
in the Premier League for the first time with
victory over Swansea City in the 2021 Champion-
ship Play-Off Final.
It has been a stark rise for Brentford in just
three full seasons under Frank, but despite it
being the Dane’s first job in England, Pierre is not
surprised by the success his former coach has
enjoyed thus far. The midfielder is only expecting
even more to come from his former mentor.
“He was very important in my early days, in
growing up from a youth to be a senior player,”
the 26-year-old admitted. “I think I was about 14
when I had him for the first time as a coach in the
Under-16 national team and then the Under-17s
and Under-19s. For many years, we followed each
other and spoke together. When he took the jobs
at Brøndby and later Brentford, we stayed in
contact and followed each other’s paths a lot.
“I learned so much from him, especially from
his personality and the way he sees football,
20
THFC Pierre-Emile Højbjerg
and, also, the way he believed in me. For sure,
he played a big part in my football when I was
growing up.
“I think he is a very good coach. He’s a very
good analyst – he analyses the game very well.
He is also a good person with a good heart and
with this mixture in whatever you do in life and
the world, I think you can achieve a lot. Thomas
has that. I know he is still in the early days in
terms of proving himself on the international
stage and everything but, back in Denmark, he
has a fantastic reputation.”
“I’M A VERY
AMBITIOUS
PERSON. NOT
ONLY AS A
FOOTBALL
PLAYER BUT AS
A PERSON”
Tonight’s game against Brentford kick-starts
our festive period of fixtures – a run of 10 games
over the next 31 days.
With such a hectic schedule in front of us, it
can be a period that is dreaded by players with
fitness coming to the fore as the games come
thick and fast. But, with so many important
games to be played across the next month, it
can also prove a pivotal moment in the season
and have a significant impact on the direction of
your campaign.
Despite the physical challenge and potential
bearing of the next month, Pierre is someone who
loves this time of the year as he feels this period
is always a time for players to give something
back to our fans, who have supported them all
year.
“It comes down to giving something to the
people,” he revealed. “It is also what this festive
period is about. To be able to give some joy
and excitement through football, not only to
ourselves but to the people following us, that is
something exciting to be part of as a player.
“This is why I love English football, the English
set up, all the games, people excited about it at
Christmas time, we can eat salad while people
eat pudding and have a pint. No problem with
that! I think it’s very special these circumstances
in England, I enjoy it a lot, it’s exciting and
hopefully we’ll get a lot of wins.”
