POST PAUL STALTERI
German Links
Canadian international full-back Paul
BACK Stalteri had a good grounding in the
Bundesliga and returned there when he
left Spurs in December 2008.
Born in Ontario, he had just started
out as a professional with Toronto Lynx
when spotted by Werder Bremen, joining
the club in November 1997, and helping
them to the League and Cup double in
2004.
He moved to Spurs the following July,
making his debut at Portsmouth. He is
best remembered by Spurs fans for his
late winner at West Ham in 2007, going
on as substitute to earn us a thrilling
4-3 triumph. He left us for Borussia
Monchengladbach the following year.
Stalteri won a then record 84 full caps
for Canada, many as captain of the side.
2 MARTIN PETERS
England international midfielder Martin Peters was a regular goalscorer as we
battled our way to the 1974 UEFA Cup Final.
Our World Cup winner – also on target against West Germany in that 1966 Wembley
triumph – netted twice for Spurs in the first round as we beat Swiss side Grasshoppers
9-2 on aggregate.
He scored at the Lane when we knocked out Aberdeen and then bagged a double with
trademark headers at home to Dinamo Tbilisi before we took on FC Cologne in the
quarter-finals.
Peters and Chris McGrath shared the goals as we returned from Cologne with a 2-1
advantage and Martin ghosted in to hit the net again as we triumphed 3-0 in the return.
That set up a semi-final with Lokomotive Leipzig where 74,000 fans looked on as
Peters helped us to a 2-1 away advantage that we turned into a 4-1 aggregate at the
Lane.
Unfortunately, he lost that goalscoring touch in the final as Feyenoord grabbed a 2-2
draw in the first leg in N17 and completed the job by a 2-0 margin in Rotterdam.

BERT MIDDLEMISS
Winger Bert Middlemiss scored a hat-trick when we kicked off our 1914 tour of
Germany, Italy and Switzerland with a 6-3 triumph at Hanover. We remained unbeaten
on the nine-match trip, scoring 34 goals, including six without reply against tonight’s
opponents Bayern Munich, this time Harry Sparrow bagging three.
We failed to win at Nuremberg where Sparrow netted in the 1-1 draw before a brace
from Bert Bliss saw us tie 2-2 at Furth in Bavaria.
6 STEFFEN IVERSEN
Despite a slender lead provided by Steffen Iversen’s penalty, we travelled to 1FC
Kaiserslautern in confidence for the return leg of our UEFA Cup second round tie in
November 1999.
We had forced numerous chances to increase that margin at the Lane but had to settle
for Iversen’s 33rd minute spot kick after goalkeeper Andreas Reinke felled David Ginola
who had been excellent on the night.
Manager George Graham subsequently left out Ginola for the reunion where two very
late goals saw us lose 2-0.
7
PAUL MILLER
We also faced German opposition in season 1981-82 when we met Eintracht Frankfurt in
the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Having hit top form in the first round against Ajax, we struggled against Dundalk with
Garth Crooks scoring home and away as we scraped through with a single goal advantage.
We knew that Eintracht would be more formidable and so they proved at the Lane where
young reserve goalkeeper Joachim Juriens kept us at bay. That was until the hour mark when
Paul Miller moved into attack and fired home from 20 yards.
Micky Hazard added a second ahead of a 2-1 defeat in the return where Glenn Hoddle hit our
decisive reply. Barcelona narrowly beat us in the subsequent semi and, when we returned to
the competition the following season, Bayern Munich knocked us out in the second round.
