THFCaway to the Africa Cup of Nations during my first season with Spurs. I really wanted to go to the tournament and represent Mali. But of course, the domestic season continues and Spurs had to carry on without me. I had started the season scoring in most matches I was playing in but after AFCON, the coach had to make other players a priority and played them ahead of me of course. So, I was fighting for much of the second half of the season for playing time and it was more shared amongst all the strikers. So, I couldn’t maintain the tally of scoring in most matches after that, as I wasn’t always starting. It was still a decent first season for me at Spurs though, especially the first half of it. What prompted your decision to leave Spurs for Sevilla in August, 2005?I was happy at Spurs but when Martin Jol arrived, I think maybe he wasn’t so keen on me as a player. I’m not the kind of guy to force a manager to play me if I’m not necessarily wanted. I could have stayed at Spurs but I did think it was better for me to leave. Sevilla were a very exciting team to join and things obviously went very well for me there.Funnily enough, when I was at Sevilla, we played against Spurs in two matches in the UEFA Cup. I can remember Martin Jol speaking to me and saying it possibly wasn’t the best move from him to let me leave Spurs. There were no hard feelings. I respect Martin and as I say, it was a fantastic move for me to Sevilla after a great time at Spurs. You mention the two-legged UEFA Cup quarter-final between ourselves and Sevilla in April, 2007. Did it feel strange playing against Spurs?Yes, it was slightly surreal. Across the two matches, it was very tight. Two games with a lot at stake for the two teams and you could sense the tension. Fortunately, from my perspective, we were able to come out on top. It was obviously a beautiful moment for me, coming back to White Hart Lane and scoring. Because I still had an attachment with London and friends there, I can remember my coach telling me before that game if we won, he was happy for me to stay in London for a few days after. Finally, can you tell us a bit about what you have been up to since retiring from playing in 2013?I am focused on youth development in Africa, mainly in two countries – Mali and Zambia. I’ve been doing that for the last 10 years. I am a consultant in youth development and I mentor young talents to help their journey in football. Some of the players I have worked with are now playing at the highest level. Mamadou Sangaré is playing for Lens and was at the Africa Cup of Nations recently. We’ve had players play in the Premier League – Patson Daka and Moussa Djenepo. And Ousmane Diakité is at West Bromwich Albion currently. It’s very rewarding for me to help these players. I have known them since they were kids and it’s incredible to see the careers they’ve gone on to have. I have passed my coaching badges and I coach both players and fellow coaches to make sure the training standards are as high as possible and the academies I am involved with are sustainable. The academies we work with are Yeelen Olympique in Mali and Kafue Celtic in Zambia. “THERE WERE SOME FANTASTIC PLAYERS AROUND ME AT SPURS, WHO MADE MY JOB EASIER.”

Our best Premier League win there was in September 2023 as we enjoyed a 5-2 success, Heung-Min Son the star of the show with a hat-trick.Burnley have found it tough going on their return to the top flight this season, currently sitting second from bottom on 13 points from 21 matches and are eight points from safety. They are without a win in 12 matches in the division, last tasting victory when they beat bottom club Wolves 3-2 at Molineux in late October. They did enjoy a 5-1 home win over Millwall in the FA Cup recently.Leading their league goalscoring charts this term are strikers Jaidon Anthony and Zian Flemming, with five goals apiece. Dutch forward Flemming has netted his five in just 15 appearances.Kick-off at Turf Moor next Saturday is at 3pm.

He went his way and I went mine, but when I came back from America he was doing corporate hospitality at the stadium and he got hold of me and asked if I would come along and join him. We built up a big friendship. Sometimes when I would be heading back down south to where I live, he and his wife Julia would invite me to stay at their place and go home the next day. He’d shout out: ‘Julia, would you come to the door? The lodger is here!’“As a player, he was the type of person who could still take criticism on the field. I’ll always remember a little thing when we played the European final against Wolves, the STEVE PERRYMAN“I’m going to use a Martin word, because he did about four or five years of punditry and the word he would always use was ‘wonderful’. He’d say ‘that was a wonderful pass’ or ‘that was a wonderful moment.’ And Martin was a wonderful player. He scored on his debut but after a while he got injured and he suffered with that – he found it very difficult to get back to where he was. But with Bill Nicholson and Eddie Baily, they were always pushing you for more. They pushed and pushed Chiv. I think in a way he reared up against it, he was a very quiet and studious man, but eventually they saw some light, he recovered his career and I’d say he became the best centre-forward in Europe for two years. In the end, I think Martin TRIBUTES TO BIG CHIVfirst leg. Bill Nicholson and Eddie Baily had a quiet word with Mart about pulling his weight. We heard that and when we went back out for the second half – Chiv always brought this up – he was in the middle, I was on one side and Mike England was on the other. We both said ‘come on Chiv, just get on and show what you can do’ and he did by scoring two goals! If we felt he wasn’t on top form, we could say ‘come on Chiv’ and he used to put his hand up in acknowledgement and say ‘yes, alright’ because he knew. You’ve always got to take criticism as well as praise and he did that brilliantly. He would always say we were like a family and that’s why we were successful. Everybody got on with each other and I think that was proven over the years.”OUR 1971 LEAGUE CUP FINAL TEAM WITH CHIV (CENTRE) ALONG WITH STEVE PERRYMAN, PHIL BEAL, PAT JENNINGS AND ALAN MULLERYThe Spurs family lost one of the all-time greats recently with the sad news of the passing of legendary former striker Martin Chivers. We spoke to some of his former team-mates to hear their memories of a ‘wonderful player’ and a ‘gentle giant’...
THFC“Another big night was when we needed to beat Leeds to stay in the First Division. Martin had just come back from a terrible knee injury, he came back into that game and scored a goal that night.“He was one of the first to do what we all now do with the legends at the stadium, the meet and greets on matchdays. He’s been doing it all these years, right the way back to near when he retired. We’re all so close because we’ve been together for so many years, we’re just like a family.”JOHN PRATT“My memory of Martin is of a gentle giant who had phenomenal pace and two great feet. I don’t know whether he really liked heading the ball but he scored a lot of good goals with his head – put all that into one and you’ve got an extremely good player. He subsequently did the hospitality at the club and he was as he was – a gentle giant.“The goal I’ll always remember is from the Wolves game, the UEFA Cup final at Molineux, his second goal. I saw his leg come back, we were near the half-way line, I thought ‘he’s not going to hit that!’ and as he did, I said ‘flipping heck!’. The ball went egg-shaped, he hit it that hard! I’d just made a tackle so I was picking myself up but the ball went to him and it was a great goal from Chiv – something that happened many times. He was predominantly right-footed but he was enormously good with his left and that was a problem for every defender he came up against because you couldn’t show him one way or the other. For a man of six feet-plus, he had phenomenal pace as well.”ALAN MULLERY“There’s one story I’d like to mention and it’s from when we became a bit older. I saw Martin was coming towards the end of his career, he’d got a bad knee, he wasn’t playing so I said ‘come to Brighton’. He came down, I said ‘how’s the leg?’ and he replied ‘still bad!’“I said ‘you’re playing!’ and within no time he’d scored a goal. He was obviously known for scoring goals, he was a goalscorer… and a very good one!“As a person, he was a very nice man. We had a few goes around on the circuit, doing the talks with supporters and he was always good. The last time we got together was in London, a big dinner and everything. He was great. He knew everything about Tottenham and about Southampton, where he’d signed from. I can’t believe he’s gone, I thought when I heard the news that it just couldn’t be right.”MARTIN WITH BILL NICHOLSON, ALAN MULLERY AND THE LEAGUE CUP TROPHY IN 1971appreciated the fact that he was pushed, cajoled and driven to get back fit.“He had such a large frame that those two teachers of his game (Bill and Eddie) thought he didn’t use it enough, they wanted him to use it more. He was so big but very light-footed, he covered the ground and was so powerfully quick, and that’s what came to the forefront in those special two years. He helped to get us two League Cups and the UEFA Cup and I’ll always be grateful to him for that. When you think of the European final against Wolves, the two goals that he got and the two goals at Wembley against Aston Villa to win the League Cup in 1971, he was almost unplayable.”PAT JENNINGS“He was such a lovely fellow. He was like a brother. We thought the world of each other and then, wow, what a player. The whole team was really close. Just the goals he scored in so many matches… and in the big, important games as well. He scored two goals and won the match for us in the League Cup Final in 1971 and then the unbelievable goal that he scored in the UEFA Cup final, first leg against Wolves away. The second goal was an unbelievable strike from distance and that’s what Martin was capable of.

74THFCFORM GUIDE France won five of their six 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches and drew the other to finish top of UEFA Group D. Didier Deschamps’ team beat Ukraine and Azerbaijan home and away while they triumphed 2-1 over Iceland in Paris in September, 2025 and drew 2-2 with them in Reykjavík in October.Les Bleus will compete in Group I at this summer’s World Cup, with their opening fixture seeing them take on Senegal in East Rutherford on 16 June while they face fellow European opposition in the shape of Norway in Foxborough 10 days later. In between, they will face the winner of ‘inter-confederation play-off two’ in Philadelphia on 22 June. Their opponents will be either Iraq, Bolivia or Suriname. THE GAFFERDidier Deschamps won 103 caps for France during his playing career and was part of Les Bleus’ squads that won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. The Bayonne-born midfielder represented Nantes, Marseille, Bordeaux (loan), Juventus, Chelsea and Valencia before hanging up his boots in 2001.Deschamps’ first managerial appointment came at Monaco, whom he guided to the Coupe de la Ligue in 2003 and the club’s first-ever UEFA Champions League Final a year later. He was in charge of former club Juventus during the 2006/07 season, when La Vecchia Signora won the Serie B title and then enjoyed a hugely successful period as Marseille manager between 2009 and 2012. During that time, they won the Ligue 1 title in 2009/10 and the Coupe de la Ligue in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Appointed as France manager in July 2012, Deschamps’ Les Bleus were knocked out of the 2014 World Cup at the quarter-final stage by eventual winners, Germany. Two years later, his side finished as European Championship runners-up before he oversaw their triumph at the 2018 World Cup. France’s success in Russia saw Deschamps become just the third person to win the World Cup as a player and a manager after Brazil’s Mário Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer.Deschamps’ team won the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League and were runners-up at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Andy Greeves offers the lowdown on various nations that will be appearing at the tournament and explores their Tottenham Hotspur connections. The Paris-born forward has since gone on to score 55 goals in 94 appearances for Les Bleus.Mbappé played in all seven of France’s matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, as Les Bleus won the competition for the second time in their history. He scored four times in the tournament, including a strike in the 4-2 victory over Croatia in the final as he became just the second teenager after Pelé to net in a World Cup Final. Mbappé won both the Golden Boot and Silver Ball at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His hat-trick in the final against Argentina saw him become just the second player to have scored in two consecutive World Cup finals after Brazil’s Vavá (in 1958 and 1962). Mbappé was a Ligue 1 winner with Monaco in 2016/17 prior to his move to Paris Saint-Germain in August 2017 for a reported €180m fee. THFCIn a new feature for this season, Billy Shaw catches up with the players to remember the kits they wore on their first appearance for Spurs. Today, legendary former striker Jermain Defoe looks back…Jermain Defoe had a knack of scoring on his debuts for various clubs throughout his career – and we were no different. The iconic marksman, who would go on to establish himself as one of our all-time greats, was just 21 years of age when he graced White Hart Lane as a Spurs player for the first time, starting in a Premier League fixture against Portsmouth in February, 2004, swiftly after joining us from today’s visitors, West Ham United. And he needed just 13 minutes to make his mark, breaking the deadlock in what turned out to be a seven-goal thriller, Gus Poyet ultimately securing a 4-3 victory for us shortly before the end.Rightly proud of his many achievements in the game, ‘JD’ can recall countless career milestones in impressive detail, but it’s for an off-field reason that he mainly remembers the kit he wore on his debut.“It fit really well but it was a nightmare to sign!” he smiled, recalling the stretchy, tight-fitting material the shirts were made out of.“The Kappa one… of course I remember it. I’ve still got it at home! I’ve got most of my shirts to be honest.“That game against Portsmouth was a special moment for me because I’d just signed and all I wanted to do was make an impact. Thankfully I did that in that shirt, so it holds great memories for me.”The England forward went on to play for Pompey before returning to the Lane for another memorable stint in our colours between 2009 and 2014.Following his retirement as a player at Sunderland in 2022, he’s had spells as a youth coach and television pundit. He remains a popular figure at the club whenever he stops by.MY DEBUT KITName: Jermain DefoePosition: StrikerDebut: Portsmouth at home, Premier League (7 February, 2004)Age on debut: 21Debut kit: 2003/04 home kitIn detail: Our home strip from 2003/04 represents the most recent outfit to be used as our first-choice apparel in two consecutive seasons, having also been worn throughout 2002/03. The simplistic white shirts, made from tight-fitting material, featured navy blue detailing on the collar and sleeve cuffs, plus piping of the same colour down the sides of the torso. The club logo appeared in the style frequently used in that period, one which has been revived on our current third kit range from Nike. The outfit was completed by navy blue shorts and white socks.Defoe2003/04
