Meet the Class

that started in Fall 2019

www.mba.ucy.ac.cy

INTRODUCTION

A new MBA class has just started at the University of Cyprus. The students admitted were chosen
through a competitive selection and join the proud UCYMBA community.

We are particularly excited with the diversity of the incoming group in terms of gender, age,
nationality (13 different nationalities are represented), educational background and area of
professional work. We have students with educational backgrounds ranging from all fields of
Engineering (Civil, Electrical & Computer, Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial) to Law, from Business
(Accounting, Finance, Marketing) and Economics to Architecture, from Social Sciences
(Psychology, Sociology, Political Science) to Sports Science, from Pure & Applied Sciences
(Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology) to Humanities (Philosophy, Literature and
Foreign Languages) and Arts. A sizable proportion, ~30%, of the incoming students hold
postgraduate degrees in their respective fields – in some cases multiple degrees or additional
professional diplomas. They work in a wide spectrum of fields that span all sectors of the
economy: banking and financial services, legal practice, industrial production,
telecommunications and information technology, construction, shipping, logistics, commerce and
trade, energy and pharmaceutical sectors, research, etc., as well as in public organizations. This
very broad diversity enriches opportunities for lively discussions in the classrooms and cross-
fertilization of experiences and ideas through collaborative work.

The members of the incoming class were invited to introduce themselves in their own words, if
they so wished, and share with the community their motivations for pursuing an MBA degree and
their aspirations from their studies at the University of Cyprus. This booklet presents personal
introductions contributed by members of the incoming class.

We extend a warm welcome to all students in the incoming class and wish each and every one
success in their studies and fulfillment of their aspirations for professional advancement and
personal development.

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION

In my career so far, I have gained valuable experience in spheres of financial advisory, capital markets,
compliance and project management.

Last May, I joined a business consulting company, Exerte Partners Ltd, as Project Manager, being responsible
for the coordination of internal resources and third parties for the flawless execution mainly of startup
projects. Prior to that, I worked for the investment banking group, AXIA Ventures Group Ltd, for about six
years where I gained vital experience in the financial industry by working next to high-caliber professionals.
Due to the size of the firm, I had the chance to work in various positions and lead diverse projects.

I prefer to use my free time constructively and therefore, I am actively involved in various committees and
non-profit organizations including the AML Committee of CIFA, the Cyprus Economic Society and Rotaract.

I have decided that now is the right time in my career to further build on my diverse experience and
knowledge by completing an MBA which will enable me to achieve my log-term goals. Having the knowledge
from the MBA program will allow me to better understand management principles. With all the uncertainty
and changes in the world, political, economic, and technological, I believe that effective management of a

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION

I have been a part of a creative and artistic industry for seven years, from higher education through to
employment. I very recently moved back to Cyprus from the UK.
Over the course of the last three years, I had the privilege to work for BDG, an award-winning London-based
company, which is part of one of the largest multinational advertising companies, WPP. I was very fortunate to
be part of BDG and witness the company evolve rapidly and successfully, as we took on remarkable
international projects, including WPP hubs in Amsterdam and Madrid.

• MSc in Shipping, Trade and Finance (1989), Cass Business School, UK

CURRENT POSITION:
➢ Managing Director, Uniteam Marine Ltd, Cyprus

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION

I am part of the management team of a multinational ship-management organisation and represent my company in
various industry bodies.
I am not looking for new career opportunities or career advancement, but I am strong believer in unceasing learning
and ongoing personal and professional development.
Having no contact with academia for almost 3 decades, this program will give me the opportunity to come across
new ideas and topics in the forefront of academic research and formally study areas which I have encountered in
my professional life and for which I lack the theoretical background (e.g., change management, multicultural issues,
CSR, etc.) It will refresh my knowledge in many areas and improve my soft skills.
I also wish to send a signal to younger colleagues and to my children that they should never stop learning and
always strive to become firstly well-respected people, as well as highly competent professionals.
Why this MBA?
For years I have been looking for a good part-time MBA at reputable universities abroad. Participation in such
programs needed a commitment to spend substantial time periods abroad, which is not possible for me due to
family obligations and extensive business travelling.
I had not considered doing an MBA at UCY until last year; but when I saw the curriculum and the qualifications of
the academic staff on the faculty, it literally took me only 5 minutes to decide to apply.
I am on skype, Viber, WhatsApp; I have FB and LinkedIn accounts but rarely use them.

EDUCATION:
• MEng, Electrical Engineering (2015), University of Southampton, UK

CURRENT POSITION:
➢ Electrical Engineer, Electricity Authority of Cyprus

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION

I graduated from the University of Southampton in 2015 with a MEng degree in Electrical Engineering. I found
the course to be highly challenging but also rewarding, and I had the chance to develop a set of skills and a
background that would greatly support me in my career. I do, however, believe that continuous development
has become increasingly important and this belief has strengthened after I started my professional experience
in London, in 2016.
After working for two years in a global Engineering Consultancy in London, I was appointed by my current
employer, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. I soon realised that my new role requires not only solid
engineering and technical knowledge, but also a set of other skills and personality traits as it involves
managing projects and people, coordinating departments and comes with high responsibilities but also with
very promising advancement prospects to directorship positions. These are in line with my career aspirations –
however, I realise that in order to excel and achieve my goals, I would require relevant training and education
of the highest standard, in a broad spectrum of topics including, leadership, strategy, management and
economics.
I decided to apply to the MBA program not only for the above-mentioned reasons but also because I believe it
will be an especially rewarding experience. It will be an excellent opportunity to study a challenging and
intense program in a very reputable institution as the University of Cyprus. I will have the chance to improve
my communication skills, expand my professional network and hone my personal and professional skills in
order to be able to confront the problems and challenges I face in my current job, as well as in the broader
business environment.
My objective is to become a highly qualified, respectful leader and manager and to be an inspiration to my co-
workers. The completion of this program will be a great step towards making a difference in my organization
and in the society in general.

Dear All,
Let me please introduce myself; my name is Thomas, I am 26 years old and I live in Belgium on the outskirts of
Liège, my lovely province. Since graduating from the university, I have been working for a Belgian company
called “John Cockerill” which specializes in the engineering industry.
During my studies, my Erasmus Coordinator offered me the opportunity to study abroad and suggested a

My Erasmus experience in Cyprus took place in the fall of 2016. I lived in Nicosia and studied for a semester at
Frederick University. In the spring of 2017, I interned in Luxembourg in the company BCO Marking Aviation.
My internship work helped me to write my final thesis on the topic of “How to develop the economic activity
of a startup in the European aviation industry.” After graduation I joined John Cockerill.

EDUCATION:

• Human Resource Management, (2015), Harbin University of Science and

Technology, China
CURRENT / RECENT POSITIONS:
➢ Senior China Relation Officer, TP ServGlobal Ltd, Cyprus
➢ Account Manager, Iron FX, Cyprus

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION

I am a young lady who is ready to face any challenges in my life. When I chose university in China, I selected one
very far away from my hometown because I wanted to go away to take on challenges and opportunities. During my
studies in China, I had set the goals to achieve excellent performance in my studies while fully experiencing college
life. I was the top student in my academy. At the same time, I volunteered in university library services and led the
university runner club. I placed 4th in the 10Km race and 8th in 5Km at the Heilongjiang Province university running
competition.

After two and half years of study in HUST, I came to Cyprus, a totally new country, to accept a new challenge and
learn more things. With the aim to develop myself, I changed my major from human resource management to
accounting and then finished my second degree in two and half years. Following my BBA degree, I am pursuing the
ACCA certification.

Apart from studies, I also try to enrich my life in my free time. When I was student, I periodically held part-time jobs
to generated money for traveling. I traveled to most cities in the north provinces of China, and also to some
countries around Europe.

At my work in TP ServGlobal Ltd, I am regularly praised by my line manager. After one and half year with the firm, I
was promoted to senior China relation officer and team leader of Chinese Business Development Coordinator.

I like movies. One of my favorites is Forrest Gump. From Gump’s life, I learned that many smarts are not an absolute
requirement in our life. An important message that I remember from from this movie is that life is like a box of
chocolate – you never know what piece you’re going to get next. So, we shouldn’t dwell in the past, but rather draw
the courage to move on. Run and run.

I applied to the UCY MBA Program in order to complete my goals and improve my professional skills, as UCY is the
best university in Cyprus and the best choice for me to do further study.
