MBA Student_Introductions_1

Meet members of the Class

entering in Sept. 2020
PART I

www.mba.ucy.ac.cy

INTRODUCTION

A new MBA class has just started at the University of Cyprus. The students admitted were chosen
through a competitive selection and join the proud UCYMBA community.

We are particularly pleased with the diversity of the incoming group in terms of gender,
nationality (11 different nationalities are represented), educational background and area of
professional work. We have students with educational backgrounds ranging from all fields of
Engineering (Civil & Environmental, Electrical & Computer, Industrial, Mechanical) to Law, from
Business (Accounting, Finance, Management Sciences) and Economics to Social Sciences
(Education, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology) and Sports Science, from Pure & Applied
Sciences (Actuarial Science, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics) to Humanities
(Philosophy, Literature and Foreign Languages) and Fine Arts. A sizable proportion, ~30%, of the
incoming students hold postgraduate degrees in their respective fields – in some cases multiple
degrees or additional professional diplomas. They work in a wide spectrum of fields that span all
sectors of the economy: banking and financial services, consulting, legal practice, information
technology, engineering and construction, logistics, commerce and trade, energy and utilities, as
well as in other public organizations. This very broad diversity enriches opportunities for lively
discussions in the classrooms and cross-fertilization of experiences and ideas through
collaborative work.

The members of the incoming class were invited to introduce themselves in their own words, if
they so wished, and share with the community their motivations for pursuing an MBA degree and
their aspirations from their studies at the University of Cyprus. This booklet presents personal
introductions contributed by members of the incoming class. The diversity of the class is reflected
in the personal profiles that the students contributed, as well as in the summary statistics in the
back of this booklet.

We extend a warm welcome to all students in the incoming class and wish each and every one
success in their studies and fulfillment of their aspirations for professional advancement and
personal development.

Meet the Class entering in Sept. 2020

NAME: Chrystalla Chistodoulou

NATIONALITY: Cypriot

EDUCATION:

• BSc in Education (2018), Primary School Education, University of Cyprus

CURRENT POSITION:

➢ Branch customer service manager, CookShop, Cyprus

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION

I graduated from the Department of Education - Primary School Teaching of the University of Cyprus, with a grade of
excellent. At the late stages of my studies, I worked in teaching and producing educational material for elementary
school students, and as a private tutor.

For the last 2 years I have been working at Cookshop – a company that markets kitchenware and home equipment. I
am in charge of one of the five branches that the company maintains in Cyprus. Through my work I have the
opportunity to collaborate with the sales and product promotion teams, so I developed the desire to further my
education in the fields of marketing, operations, organizations and management.

I was, of course, familiar with the University of Cyprus, as an academic institution, from my undergraduate studies. The
University of Cyprus was my first choice for my postgraduate studies to pursue my personal and professional goals.
After reviewing the curriculum of the UCYMBA program, I am convinced that it is most suitable for students who want
to develop and advance to managerial positions in the business world, as it offers an holistic coverage of all essential
business subfields with a practical orientation in instruction.

Through my postgraduate studies in the UCYMBA program, I seek to acquire practical knowledge and management
skills in order to become more effective in positions of responsibility, to evolve as a professional, and to build a
network of professional contacts. I also aim to strengthen my communication, strategic thinking, leadership,
collaboration, and negotiation skills that are essential tools for advancement in business careers. Coming from the field
of education, I also aim to strengthen my profile with a postgraduate degree in management so as to be more
competitive for senior positions related to educational administration and evaluation in educational institutions.

A unique experience that I would like to share is the distinction we achieved as the Nest Fold team in the global
competition "NASA Space Apps Challenge 2017". Our team’s proposal addressed a problem of providing protection in
times of natural disasters: https://2017.spaceappschallenge.org/challenges/warning-danger-ahead/and-you-can-help-
fight-fires/teams/nestfold. Our entry excelled in the "People's Choice" category. With our victory in the competition,
we received as a Prize an invitation from NASA to visit and tour NASA's facilities in the United States and to watch in
person a planned rocket launch. This opportunity was indeed a dream come true. Even though the rocket launch was
postponed, due to weather conditions, we had an amazing and inspiring experience as we toured NASA’s impressive
facilities and interacted with NASA scientists and administrators. For this victory, we were awarded the "Manolis
Christofidis 2018" prize by the Young Scientists Organization. This unique experience taught me that with persistence,
teamwork, and dedication, everything is possible.

Meet the Class entering in Sept. 2020

NAME: Evdokia Efthymiou

NATIONALITY: Cypriot

EDUCATION:
• BA, Fine Arts, University of Nicosia, Cyprus

CURRENT POSITION:
➢ Assistant of children with special needs, Apostolos Varnavas Special School, Nicosia

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION

I completed my undergraduate studies in Fine Arts at the University of Nicosia, a degree which enabled me to explore my
own artistic style. Since my primary professional goal is to eventually manage my own art studio and school, and possibly
a museum or gallery as well, I decided to apply to the MBA program. Museums and other visual and cultural centers
require dynamic managers with a forward vision and who can keep up with the demands of the times and technology,
helping the public to engage meaningfully with their activities.

Fine arts schools, museums and galleries not only help maintain the cultural identity and heritage of a nation, but they
also promote the self-expression of individuals, by presenting to them different artistic media, styles, and movements.
Such entities must be managed as businesses, as they operate within an increasingly competitive environment with many
financial, organisational and operational challenges. By attending the MBA at the University of Cyprus, I will have the
opportunity to acquire essential knowledge and skills in key business and management topics, e.g., by attending a diverse
range of relevant modules. Classes are delivered by academics with years of experience and, therefore, I am confident
that I will receive the best possible education and skills for venturing into the field of cultural and arts management.

My undergraduate studies encouraged me to develop analytical and critical thinking skills through the close examination
of art theory and practice. Working on projects alongside other students strengthened my collaborative skills, whereas
my own individual practice helped me learn how to also work effectively on my own initiative. Through my work
experience, much of which took place while also studying, I developed a robust work ethic and determination. Working in
the retail and customer service industry helped me to acquire excellent teamwork and communication skills, to
appreciate the value of attention to detail and, most importantly, to realize that customer care and interpersonal skills
are absolute necessities for any successful manager or any young professional who aspires to become one. My
volunteering activities have been instrumental in enabling me to give back to the community and develop the virtues of
patience, leadership and good organisational abilities, while helping me develop an awareness of financial issues through
my involvement in fundraising and fund management.
