The Opening Ceremony was held over lunch, with a great
performance by the Taiko Drummers group, and the opening

The afternoon was the 72-arrow round and ranking for match-
play. It was also the first attempt at electronic scoring for the
Nationals. There were some challenges for the archers, but
also some great benefits for the admin team. There were some
learnings for next year as it was the first time Archery NZ has
attempted to do something like this on such a scale. Thanks
to Peter Baker for his expertise in helping getting this up and
running.
January 8 dawned ready for the 1440 round – a gruelling day of
shooting for the archers. However, after the event the archers
were invited to a social catchup at Doolan Brothers, which was
a great time for the archers to hang out and chat and catch up
with their friends they hadn’t seen in a while.
The sixth day was the individual match-play out at Rongomai.

Distinguished Service
TONY EASTWOOD
Tony has contributed to club, regional and National level archery
through his service to coaching at all levels and held office at club
(President, Senior Coach), Regional (Chairman, Head Coach, WATT
Coach), and National level (coaching body). He is best known for
his coaching and been part of the “coaching” framework at all
levels. He is moving to Papamoa next year.
Therefore, we think it is timely that he be nominated for a service
award. Tony is unlikely to give up archery and Papamoa will gain
from our loss. One of his many achievements is the development
of the WAA600 Series which is held annually by all the WAA clubs
during the year. To this day Tony, who cannot resist coaching,
gives advice to all archers who require it.
At club level he often does not get to shoot on a club day due
to him helping some member or visiting archer from another
club seeking his advice and help. Tony, at 73, is still a competitive
archer and last year was one of the few New Zealanders to
become a World Master across three archery styles (Indoor, Target
and Field).
CHRISTINE RUSSELL
In recognition of outstanding service to Archery New Zealand.
Christine has worked for 20 years as Treasurer of the Auckland
Archery Club, and has been on the committee longer than that
time also.
She has been an Archery NZ coach for 12 years, and has always
put her hand up to take the beginner’s courses at the club,
getting hundreds of archers into the sport.
As well as coaching, Christine has been Director of Shooting
at many tournaments during the last two decades, and has
been on the local organising committees for local and national
tournaments.
She has been an integral part of the National Championships
and the WMG2017 Administration Team.
FRANCES ROSS
Frances has worked at a high level with commitment on behalf of
Archery NZ since 2011. The work completed has been integral to
the running of the Association and the National Championships.
Frances has been:
President of Archery NZ 2011-2012
Member of Archery NZ Outdoor National Championships
Administration Team from 2013 – 2016
Member of Archery NZ Outdoor National Championships Entry

Coaches of the Year 2018
“On behalf of the Coaches Commission, I would like to thank Colin and Dave for their outstanding coaching contributions in 2018. These
awards are well-deserved, and the communities they coach in are very appreciative of their efforts, experience and wisdom. Well done on
being the 2018 Coaches of the Year.”
Andrew Russell, Coaches Panel Representative
DAVE HENSHAW
David is the current president of the Christchurch Archery Club
and a life member of Archery NZ and Christchurch Archery Club.
Over his years in coaching he has trained and supported 2 NZ
Olympic archers, and has now trained and supported the first NZ
Youth Olympic archer: Rebecca Jones.
Given his wealth of knowledge and many years’ experience
in archery, his opinion is often sought regarding suggestions
for improvement. He is always prepared to speak up, debate
and challenge, such is his passion for wanting to see archery
progress.
Dave’s coaching is without doubt a great success. He is very
attuned to his athletes, quickly developing a rapport and
identifying their mode of learning. He has the ability to observe
and objectively identify areas for improvement, to then
formulate a coaching plan to achieve a long-term effective
archery technique, not a short-term fix.
Dave strives to keep up to date with all things archery, including
technology and equipment. He organises and presents coaching
workshops, both for those involved in archery and for himself.
He is very giving of his knowledge gained, for the benefit of
athletes and the sport in general.
Dave consistently and continually leads by example. He is highly
principled and is an excellent role model to all, and particularly
the younger archers. Whilst he takes his archery seriously, he also
maintains a sense of humour. In order to optimise the time spent
with those he coaches, he routinely arrives at the club early
on the designated days to set up the range. This is particularly
important during the week for the junior archers who attend
coaching after school. During the sessions, he spends most
of his time coaching each athlete on a one-to-one basis often
sacrificing his own shooting to give his time to others.
COLIN TUCKER
Colin is a supportive, helpful and approachable coach. Not just
for parents supporting their kids but for archers of all ages who
want to learn. Guidance is always given and is often in a form
that encourages the archer to think about their sport critically.
He is mindful of archers, especially of their ability to afford
equipment. He encourages archers to proceed at a pace that
families feel comfortable with.
He dedicates his time during the week to those who ask for help,
including maintaining equipment, and opens up his home to
help club members after club hours. He always finds time to
help those who want to learn.
He has coached Julia Harrison from the first day she picked
up a bow to her double Junior Women’s Recurve champion
titles, silver at 2018 Trans-Tasman and gold at the 2018 Oceania
championships.

History:
The iconic Vegas Shoot is the world’s largest indoor archery
tournament.
In 2019, the Vegas Shoot hit another milestone in entries,
breaking 3700 for the first time at its 53rd edition.
The largest indoor archery tournament in the world has
doubled in size over the past six years. It’s grown exponentially
since it was born more than half-a-century ago.
It was in 1991 that the now iconic Vegas shoot downs were
introduced. The format pitted the archers with a perfect score
at the end of the round against each other in sudden death
competition to decide the winner.
Then, in 1993, the official three-spot Vegas target was used and
the targets set at 20 yards. At the 1999 event, it was announced
that the National Field Archery Association would take
ownership of the Vegas Shoot beginning in 2000.
In 2012 the event moved to the South Point Hotel and Casino.
In 2014, the event saw 2000 archers register for the first time.
That same year, Dutchman Mike Schloesser became the first
shooter from outside of North America to win the main event,
beating out 10 other men in the shootdown.
The championship compound open division – open to both
men and women – was introduced in 2016 and Sergio Pagni
became the first lucky dog to win the shoot, taking home USD
50,000 at the event’s 50th edition.
The Future:
The Vegas Shoot is arguably the most popular fixture on the
international archery calendar. It’s grown to include categories
for almost every conceivable competition bowstyle, the Indoor
Archery World Series Final, and special events for school kids,
initiatives like Break the Barriers and a comprehensive seminar

Profiles of Awesome
ELIZABETH RANDLE
I have now been shooting for 16 years. I’m really looking
forward to the Australian open- I have been trying to get to
this event for the past 4- 5 years but the dates have always
clashed with work or another event so I am looking forward to
adventuring down to South Australia this year for it.
I also want to be a part of the Australian National Matchplay
finals- If I make the cut for it. I still have one more leg to
compete in and hopefully get enough points to be selected for
the final. It looked like a very cool event last year and would be
an awesome experience to compete in it this year.
And of course i want to do well at the World Archery World cup
2- Shanghai, World Cup 4- Berlin and World Championships
– Netherlands. I’m excited to experience more international
events and compete in more countries.
When I’m away from the archery range, I do find myself:
- Working
- Fletching or fixing arrows
- Hanging out with friends and family
- Completing University work
- Doing something outdoors, walking on the beach, road
cycling or off on a road trip.
My favourite archery club is one that isn’t windy! Top two so far
are Mt Green Archery Club in Auckland and Coast Archers in
New South Wales, Australia.
LISA WALKER
I’ve been shooting for 5 years now. I have loved being on the
shooting line with all of the top archers from across the world
the last time I was at Shanghai. Of all the events I’ve been to, it
was also the one that had the biggest sense of occasion. It was
very cool even if I probably looked like a deer caught in the
headlights the whole time.
I am inspired by so many people so this is just a very short list:
In archery – Sara Lopez, Crystal Gauvin, and my awesome team
mates, in other sports - Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer
In life – Richard Branson, JK Rowling, Maya Angelou, and my
husband
I’m really looking forward to the World Championships in the
Netherlands in June. It is a realisation of a dream to be chosen
to compete in a World Archery Championship. We have a great
team of archers who are great shooters and fun to be around.
And after the tournament I get to visit my bestie in the UK who
is having a baby!
Away from the archery range I’m either working or shooting.
If I’m not then I’m either spending time with family, reading,
watching movies or planning my next travel adventure.
Aim to improve 1% every day; imagine where you’ll be in a
year.

CHLOE UNDERDOWN
Way back when I was at Gisborne Intermediate, they had
an initiative where on a Friday morning you went to a non-
common sport for so many weeks to ‘have a go’. I was lucky
enough on my second attempt to have my name accepted for
archery. There were only 2 girls in our group of 15 and I seemed
to do ok. I remember shooting from the 10m line and being
so proud when I could hit the gold. My dad encouraged me to
join the Gisborne Archery Club and he did too. I started with
recurve for several years before converting to compound.
I have already exceeded my expectation this year at
Nationals, making the NZ team and qualifying for the World
Championships. It is going to be one-heck of a trip this year
and I am very lucky to be travelling with experienced archers
Liz and Lisa in my team. They already know I will be firing a
million questions their way (sorry in advance team!) and the
rest of the NZ crew no doubt.
World Archery World Cup (Stage 2 – Shanghai) will be the
biggest learning curve as it is the first long-haul flight for me
as I have only been as far as Melbourne and Gold Coast in
Australia.
Away from the archery range, I am a Civil Engineering
Technician for GHD. There are always roads and realignments
to design, flood damage to correct, dropouts to fill and bridges
to check. Outside of work, I support my partner Bryce with his
love of motorsport.
I love my club. GISBORNE! We are extremely privileged to
have a 30m indoor range that can cater to 30 archers with an
outdoor range to suit. You can never count on the weather
though as we had sunshine, rain, hail and fog all in the same
day but it makes for a great challenge.
My parents have always told me and my sister that you should
always try your best, even if you know its not your best and
never give up. Always give what you want to receive.
