Take Charge of Risk Factors Impacting Heart Health

You likely know exercise is good for you, but an Oxford University
study revealed simply swapping 30 minutes of sitting with low-in-

chicken!” After he said that, I began to look at myself and
my life so far and thought he was right.

The thought of becoming older made me so gloomy!! So
since then, that phrase, spring chicken, has been stuck in
my head. I turned 45 last December, and it’s finally hit-
ting me, this midlife crisis or whatever you want to call it.
Also, my knee is sending me pain messages that are not
great either. I was upset. I’m doing everything I can to beat
aging, and my knee has started bothering me. Was this a
sign of changing something in my life?

I’m learning more and more every day about the impor-
tance of eating well, exercising, sleeping, and less stress.
So far, so good! I do need to sleep more and have to let
go of stress. Connecting with my son and my husband has
been good de-stressors in nature.

Walking around in nature has been proven to help your
overall health. The exercise you’ll be getting with your
new nature habit; physical activity improves sleep qual-
ity and increases sleep duration. Sunlight regulates your
body’s melatonin production, which will help you get
a better night’s sleep. Besides melatonin, when you are
walking in nature, you’ll also start to release more happy
hormones giving you a natural high. Endorphins can help
reduce pain and increase feelings of wellness.

Above all, walking in nature will reduce feelings of stress
and anxiety and improve your overall health and happi-
ness – from personal experience, it’s a win/win situation!

Bio:
Monic Reyes is a self-taught fine art, contemporary artist born and raised in San
Antonio, Texas. Monic would spend her time drawing, sewing clothing for her
dolls, and creating school art projects from a young age. She loved anything where
she could share her self-expression and creativity. She holds an intensive back-
ground in fashion as she has co-designed alongside her mother for several years for
their fashion design company Malen Reyes Couture. She discovered and explored
her creativity through time, which led her to have many other interests like pho-
tography, interior design, and art. It wasn’t until 2015, in search of paintings for
her mother’s home, that Monic picked up a paintbrush, and at that moment, she
knew that she found her true passion. Monic believes her talent and eye for cre-
ativity owed to her mother, who has always encouraged and inspired her to create.

We are named to honor the memory
and legacy of a hero, Geronimo Pratt,
who spent his life fighting on behalf of
Black Americans.

The Elmer Geronimo Pratt Pistol and Rifle Gun Club fully affirm the right and duty of Black people to
protect ourselves, our families and our communities and we embody that belief by leading by example.
Our members and leaders never fail to rise to the occasion- from training those with the genuine desire to
learn and serving the unhoused, to working with those with like-minded goals and making the political
push needed to change unjust laws and influence the political landscape; all of these actions are sorely
needed to improve the quality of life for our community. We will never stop fighting for justice for Black
America. Founder Nick Bezzel.

Message from Member: “I love this gun club. They are all about training and helping the community by
providing food every week, I am so proud to be a member”
