Penned by: Leo Sandupama Edirisinghe Let pure smiles spread everywhere around you! Different cultures explain and see happiness in various perspectives. These dissimilar definitions and notions add colour to the term "happiness". In fine, happiness can be defined as a personal feeling which cherishes the inner soul of the particular person. Besides, most Americans feel happiness as an inalienable human right and it is commonly associated with positive experiences as well as personal achievements. To the Japanese people it is alluded to social harmony. On the other hand, Hong Kong Chinese have defined happiness through more low arousal positive states. Even though the scientific research and analysis depict above data, the concept of happiness is consistent across cultures to an important extent and encompasses both internal and external aspects. Happiness is taken as a major factor of development for both humans and countries. While Matthieu Ricard was declared to be the "happiest person on the planet", Finland ranked as the happiest country in the world for the seventh year in a row. Currently, happiness is celebrated internationally every year on March 20th to promote wellbeing and a compassionate world. The United Nations declared March 20th as the International Day of Happiness in 2012, recognizing the significance of happiness and wellbeing in promoting sustainable development and global peace. Let’s Make Every day, a Happy Day... Happiness is a happy word which gives us chills whenever we hear the word. However this cannot only be taken as a word, but also can be taken as an emotion or a feeling which leads us to a joyous life. Everything in this world has history. So, happiness has its own happy origin. This term happiness comes from the Old Norse term “happ” meaning "luck" or "chance". It is also related to the Old English word “haepic” meaning "equal". Later, Francis Hutcheson, an Irish reverend and philosopher brought a political interpretation of happiness to English speakers with his 1725 treatise, “An Inquiry into the Original of Our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue”. Apart from this political interpretation, the psychological and philosophical pursuit of happiness began in China, India and Greece with Confucius, Buddha, Socrates and Aristotle nearly 2500 years ago. Penned by: .Gayani Wijethunga Phase 03 of the project was held in the SOS Village Piliyandala. The project consisted of a dynamic leadership development programme, where studentswere immersed in a series of engaging activities and interactive sessions. Through team-building exercises, problem-solving challenges, and leadership workshops, students improved their communication skills, and learned the importance of collaboration and effective leadership. Moreover, this phase included interactive counselling sessions, where students received guidance and supportfrom an experienced counsellor. These sessions provided a safe space for students to explore their strengths and weaknesses, and provided the inspiration they needed to succeed in life. A journey through three phases of supportive education… In a world where academic excellence is paramount, providing students with the tools and supportthey need to succeed is essential. Over the past few months, a transformative project has been underway ,aimed at assisting students facing the Advanced Level Examination through a series of seminars and counselling sessions. Let’s take a journey through the phases 03, 04, 05 ofthe project, “Nenasara Athwela”, each designed to empower students and nurture their academic and personal growth. NENASARA ATHWELA PHASES 03, 04 & 05 Phase Four: Seminar Series and Continued Counselling Support Phase Five: Reinforcing Seminars and Counselling Sessions Phase Three : Leadership Development Programme and Interactive Counselling Session The project progressed into its fifth phase, through a series of seminars, and counselling sessions in another district. The phase 05 was held in Maliyadewa Boys’ College Kurunegalawith other seven invited schools. Meanwhile, the counselling sessions provided students the support they needed mentally to prepare for the exam. Whether providing last-minute exam tips, offering emotional support, the lecturer remained dedicated to help students with their academic journey confidently. As we reflect on the journey through these three phases of supportive education, one thing becomes abundantly clear: the impact of this project extends far beyond the confines of the classroom. By empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and supportthey need to succeed, we are not only shaping the future generation ofleaders but also fostering a communitywhere every individual has the opportunity to thrive. Phase 04 ofthe project consisted of a series ofinformative and engaging seminars. This was held in Ranwala Mahanaga Maha Vidyalaya, Kegalle with five other invited schools. Covering a range of topics from effective study techniques to time management and exam preparation strategies, these seminars provided students with valuable insights and practicaltips to succeed in their studies. Simultaneously, the counselling support continued, offering students guidance and encouragement to face the examination. The counsellor addressed academic concerns, career aspirations, to supportthe academic and personal development of students. 04

The Education and Literacy Avenue aimed to provide quality education and literacy for the country's future through the project “Sanhinda” which has three main phases aimed at spreading quality education among students in the country. The First Phase of the project, initiated as Akura, focused on seminars for Ordinary Level students in probation centers. As these students often lack exposure to the outside world and lack opportunities for extra classes or seminars. The Organizing Committee collaborated with probation centers in the Western Province to organize seminars for Sinhala and Mathematics. The seminars were held on January 19th and 28th, with contributions of Avenue members. The Second Phase of the project was initiated as “Saviya”. It was a career guidance workshop for youth, particularly school leavers in rural areas, to provide a broader perspective on the modern world and new opportunities for starting businesses and achieving financial stability, as they lack the opportunity to access latest trends and opportunities. This workshop on career guidance and motivation was held at Aliwanguwa Vidyalaya, Anuradhapura, on March 2, 2024. Penned by: Leo Buddhini Embuldeniya The most important phase of the project was the Third Phase, which was computer donation. As the world moves into a technological era, school students must be equipped with computer literacy. but some schools in rural areas do not have computer facilities. Hence, the OC members, with the help of the Directors and the LB members, organized a programme to donate computer sets to a school where they do not have computers for the learning activities. With donations and sponsorships, OC got four full-set computers. The donation was made to Bandaranayaka Maha Vidyalaya, Balangoda, on March 13, 2024. Students welcomed Leos warmly to their school and the school academic staff and the students had organized a programme including dancing items and drama. These students suffered for years without a computer to complete their education. Therefore, this brought them much happiness and strength to continue their learning in a more productive way. With all these main three phases, the Education and Literacy Avenue has made a memorable remark on the quality of education in the country. This effort was successful in creating a better educated society in the future. SANHINDA 06

I did not know who I wanted to be when I grew up but I was sure that it would definitely be something to do with the arts because I don’t think I would ever do a 9-5 job. I had different phases in my life; I sometimes wanted to be an actress, an artist, a teacher or get into the fashion industry but overtime, things changed. When I was a child, I was very shy to dance, mostly because our traditional costumes reveal the core area. I was a very reserved child; neither did I like to go to classes nor was I comfortable wearing them but eventually with age and the knowledge that I received, I fell in love with dancing. I think I’ve fallen into the right place, to a place where I belong because everything that I wanted to be when I was a child now incorporates what I do. I act on stage, I sketch, I teach and I also design and wear different costumes. I wouldn’t have done better in another industry, so I’m truly blessed to have chosen this path. What did you want to be when you grow up? If you hadn’t been who you are today, who could you have been? Aseka is a very family-oriented girl, who loves to have a very simple lifestyle. She also loves to spend time with people , with all her loved ones, her family and her friends. She just loves being around people and is very peoplefriendly. Apart from dance, she loves music and cinema. Also, she likes to live in the moment, which is also her motto in life because one can stress about tomorrow later but one needs to cherish whatever one has now. Every second of this day is a moment to be happy without regret. Who is Aseka? Apart from being a renowned figure, the dancer and the actress that we know, can you brief us an introduction to yourself? “It's lovely to see how people still find time to grow the traditions within themselves, to make oneself a proud Sri Lankan.” The most influential are my parents. It was not easy for them to reach these heights. They had gone through so much to get to where they are now and for us to be who we are today. They inspire me every day because I learn new things every time I spend time with them. I wouldn’t have had achievements without them. So, I’m truly blessed to have them as my Gurus. Especially, my mom, I love her patience and how talented she is in multi-tasking. It’s actually very convenient to be with her as she can do anything and everything. Well, my father is full of knowledge. I believe he is extraordinary and is far beyond a normal human being! I’m truly honoured and extremely blessed for their influence. Having been raised in a family of dancers, who do you consider to be the mostinfluential on your career today? “Every second of a day is a moment to be happy, without regret.” 08

Working towards being a professional has been hard for me, but I’m right on track now. It has not been easy for me, so I ‘m extremely content of what I have been moulded into within the last 10 years. I should say I’m content with where I am today and the span of 10 years has not been an easy journey. Even though it looks simple and easy, like a bed of roses, it has never been that. Yes, my parents opened the doors for me, so it was really easy for me to get into the industry and stabilize myself there. But, maintaining this position for a long time and becoming the dancer that I am today required a lot of hard work. You need to have a good mental and physical synchronization for the passion you have towards the arts and you need to be a strong individual. You need to be mentally prepared, because you will not always receive the positive feedback that you're looking for. You'll always get criticized, there will always be negativity. Since different people see you in different ways, even though you're an entertainer, you can't entertain every man on earth. So, you shouldn’t be discouraged every time you get a negative comment. This has been really hard for me and as a Kandyan dancer, you need a lot of strength, energy and you have to give in a lot of your time. How do you see yourself looking back ten years from now, how has your journey been so far? Well, the growth in Sri Lankan traditional dancing is in a really good state at the moment because I see many people getting into it. I see competitions happening, and many people appreciating our culture, heritage and traditions. There are new creations happening with the traditions instilled in them, so I think it's levelling up to a different stage and I'm extremely happy to see where dancing is now. Also, it's beautiful to see how parents still love to send their children for traditional dancing classes because this is a key place where you still have your traditions going. For example, we start by worshipping our teachers and doing the Namaskaraya. There’s a huge value and bond that is being created with the influence of traditions, religion and culture. From worshipping our elders, the God, the floor and the sun to taking permission from everyone, it's beautiful to see how parents want their children to feel this uniqueness. The Sri Lankan traditional dance is truly Sri Lankan. It's very unique to us. We must evolve with the world as the world changes. But, we tend to not give much importance for our traditions because people are very distracted nowadays. Yet, it's lovely to see how people still find time to grow the traditions within themselves, to make oneself a proud Sri Lankan. I think it is our duty as elders and as teachers to protect our culture and pass it on to our next generation. These things should be treasured because this is what we have and this is who we are. So, I’m happy to see how the Sri Lankan traditional dancing style keeps growing. How do you see the growth in Sri Lankan traditional dancing, apart from the support extended by the Channa Upuli Performing Arts Foundation? “Dance has the ability to express and also impress, and dance makes my soul happy… That's why we say, when in doubt, dance it out!” I appreciate every form of dance. Apart from Sri Lankan traditional dancing, I've also studied classical ballet under Mrs. Deanna Jayasuriya and I find every dance style extremely amazing. Dance has the ability to express and also impress, and dance makes my soul happy. I love watching different dance videos from which I learn and try different movements. Every dance style has a very unique history of how it started. There are specific reasons as to why these movements have been created. Dance possesses the ability to express anything. Dance is life for me, so I love any form of dance. That's why we say, when in doubt, dance it out! 09

Having a suitable costume for a performance is one of the main things that you need to think about because it has to support your performance; it has to express the same story or the message that you are trying to convey through your movements. It can't be completely different. It definitely has to have the three “F”s, which are Fit, Functioning, and Fabric. The “fit” has to be in a certain way that you can move your body easily. The “functioning” has to be very different from a very ordinary jacket or dress, because you make various movements when dancing. Then, the “fabric” has to be perfect as it can change with gender, colour and texture. You should make your costume a part of your performance. If not, the costume would completely deviate from your story. I feel many people nowadays are not aware of, especially the male and female colours. This is very important because for example, the female red and the male red are completely different in its colour and texture. If this difference is not considered, it could completely wash off someone’s femininity or masculinity. You should be aware of what you're trying to express. Can you tell me about the importance of having a suitable costume in a performance? As a female dancer, what are your comments about the femininity and the elegance that a female dancer requires in a performance? Balancing your family life and your career is very important. I was very family-oriented, so it was really hard for me to balance my social life and the work I do, but I feel that I've come to a state where I can balance both of them today. Sometimes, you have to make choices. For instance, if there is a very special day in your career, you might have to cancel on a family event or vice versa. Life is full of choices and you must commit to your choices. It's about how a right choice is made at the right time. You need to plan how time is given for your career, for yourself and for your family, thereby, all these leads to a successful work-life balance. I require a lot of energy for what I do and after all that, if there is a family commitment or any other endeavour, I feel exhausted. Yet, I make sure I participate, because it's a choice that I make to find time for my family. It is hard, but it's possible and you need to do adhere to it to have a successful lifestyle. Finally, can you share some insights on how someone can effectively balance their personal commitments with their career, particularly when their professional responsibilities become overwhelming? Colour is energy so, factors such as the proper usage of colours, how it's going to look on you, how it's going to blend in with your skin tone must be carefully reflected upon. Designing a costume is extremely hard because, for example, even though there is a specific colour you want that matches the theme of your performance, which also suits the character and the mood, might not support the lights, have the same look on camera, or the same with your makeup on. With all these, you should also be able to decide on a suitable budget for the costume. So, for a performance to be successful, the costume does play a huge role. I believe in beauty, and the key for a female dancer is grace and elegance. You can capture anything with beauty. By beauty, I don't mean a beautiful face but a very beautiful soul and a beautiful body. You need to be in perfect shape as a dancer. Construct yourself in a way that just hitting a pose could make someone's eyes locked onto you even if you are in a pitch-black spot. You need to have that skill as an entertainer for people to watch the whole performance. In the Channa Upuli Performing Arts Foundation, we emphasize on the three curves of a woman's body, which is also called “Tribhanga” in the Indian art forms. When your soul is beautiful, it radiates. It will show your aura and it will connect beautifully with your audience which is a very special and a beautiful connection. From the tip of your fingers to a strand of your hair, you must inculcate a very rhythmic value within you. This makes a dancer unique. It's the rhythm that runs a dancer’s body and as long as you and your thoughts are beautiful, everything is possible. Scripted by: Leo Sevni Jayasinghe 10

Penned by: Leo Hiruni Saubhagya Hugs Over Drugs In a world where second chances are invaluable, the Youth Development Avenue of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya successfully concluded “Hugs over Drugs”, Phase 02 of the project BreakingFree'23 on 29th of February 2023 at the Mithuru Mithuro Movement, Pelmadulla. This phase was focused on empowering the community of inmates of rehabilitation centers to reintegrate into society with confidence and enhancing their mental resilience . Building on the foundation laid in phase one, Phase 02 determined to provide essential goods and conduct valuable sessions according to the requests made by inmates themselves of a selected rehabilitation center. During the midpoint of phase one, a study had been carried out to collect data from the inmates. The members had opted to organize a friendly meetup with the inmates as the Second Phase of the project, naming the event "Hugs over Drugs". The friendly meetup served as the springboard for a day of connection and support, where the counselling and relaxation session, expertly led by Leo Aneesa Azeem and her supportive companion, were meticulously tailored to elevate the psychological well-being and stress management of the inmates. Through a thoughtfully curated blend of activities such as music programmes, breathing exercises, and interactive sessions, these sessions provided invaluable tools for relaxation and self-discovery, enriching the rehabilitation experience for all participants. The most enjoyable segment of the event was undoubtedly the fashion show, which not only showcased the creative flair but also highlighted the unity among the inmates. As the fashion show concluded, the inmates came together to serenade the gathering with songs. This provided a wonderful opportunity for them to exhibit their vocal talents, and each inmate who participated delivered an impressive performance, adding a touch of harmony and joy to the occasion. Despite facing obstacles along the way, dedication and collaborative efforts of the Organizing Committee ensured the success of the project. Overcoming challenges together, they forged ahead, determined to make a positive impact on the lives of the inmates. The friendly meetup served as a catalyst for building bonds and instilling hope. The counselling sessions equipped the inmates with essential skills to navigate their emotions and challenges effectively. The day left a lasting impression, fostering a sense of camaraderie and empowerment among both inmates and club members. “Hugs over Drugs” exemplifies the Leo Club's unwavering commitment to social responsibility and making a tangible difference in the lives of those seeking rehabilitation. Through their dedication and compassion, they are lighting the path for a brighter future for all involved. BREAKINGFREE’23 PHASE 02 22

The journey of preparations began long before the event’s commencement. Months of planning, countless meetings, and relentless ER hunting sessions were the building blocks of this grand celebration. The mission of the team behind this festive celebration was to create a memorable and authentic experience that honoured the cultural and traditional significance of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year while providing a platform for the Leos to showcase their talents and creativity. “සූරිය සිං හලේ UOK Leos එක්ක අවුරු දු” is the annual Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya. This year, the Organizing Committee hosted the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration under the theme of “සූරිය සිං හලේ UOK Leos එක්ක කෝ පි කඩේ අවුරු දු” with the guidance of the Executive Board of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya. As the echoes of laughter and joy still resonate in our memories, it’s essential to shine a spotlight on the unseen heroes who made it all possible. The Organizing Committee had also prepared a dancing performance with days of practice to make the event day more beautiful and vibrant. Besides, the members committed day and night to make the decorations in order to have the event most perfect and elegant. The members shared the responsibilities and duties for the day of the event with the guidance of the Executive Board members. The preparation process involved numerous tasks, including selecting the perfect venue, fundraising, and coordinating with various institutions and organizations. The Organizing Committee worked tirelessly, often sacrificing their own time to ensure every detail was carefully considered. They first started off with fundraising events. The members organized food stalls that included mojitos and other various savouries. In fundraising events, not only the ER Coordinators worked to raise funds for the event, but all the committee members worked hard together. Communication and teamwork were key components of the committee's success. Members collaborated closely, exchanging ideas, and sharing responsibilities to bring their vision to life. As the day of the celebration approached, the committee's commitment to excellence became increasingly evident. They managed unexpected challenges with grace and adaptability, ensuring that the event ran smoothly and according to plan. Their hard work and perseverance not only made the event memorable for all who attended but also demonstrated the power of teamwork and community engagement in creating something truly special. “සූරිය සිං හලේ UOK Leos එක්ක කෝ පි කඩේ අවුරු දු” had been, hence, a resounding success. As the event drew nearer, the committee’s efforts were increased, with late-night meetings and last-minute adjustments. Yet, amidst the chaos, there was a sense of excitement and anticipation, a shared belief that their hard work would culminate in a celebration to remember. Cheers to more joyful Leo celebrations in the years and months to come! Penned by: Leo Gayani Wijethunga 30

The project "Kelibimata Arunalu 3.0", organized by the Sports and Recreation Avenue, concluded its impactful first phase, successfully igniting a passion for sports among school students. Designed to empower students with the tools and knowledge they need to pursue their athletic dreams, this multi-phased initiative is fostering the development of well-rounded individuals. Phase I of the project kicked off with a thrilling Wushu tournament, a competition open to both school students and members of the Wushu Club of University of Kelaniya. This exciting event served a multitude of purposes, promoting sports participation, building discipline and teamwork, and encouraging respect and self-control. Beyond the physical fitness benefits, participation in the Wushu tournament significantly contributed to the students’overall character development. It served as a practical application of health and fitness principles, reinforcing the idea that sports play a crucial role in shaping well-rounded individuals. Whether a seasoned Wushu student or a newcomer eager to learn, the tournament offered an invaluable opportunity to gain experience. "Kelibimata Arunalu 3.0" looks towards the future with its exciting plans for Phase II. The Sports and Recreation Avenue hopes to equip schools with the necessary resources to nurture future generations of athletes. Through the donation of essential sports equipment, the project aims to uplift student health and fitness, and improve sports infrastructure.Furthermore, a dedicated health and fitness workshop is planned to educate students on the importance of physical well-being and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. This informative session will equip students with theoretical knowledge, creating a sustainable framework for the continuing development of their sports talents. With Phase I successfully concluded, "Kelibimata Arunalu 3.0" looks ahead to building a strong foundation for the future of sports within the participating schools. Penned by: Leo Rizma Uvais Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean… Understanding the environmental challenges posed by non-biodegradable waste, the Poverty and Hunger Avenue of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya initiated the project "Eco bricks". The project's initial phase, Weligama beach clean-up was effectively completed, capturing the attention of many. The voice advocating for environmental protection of the members of the Avenue persisted beyond that moment. Consequently, they convened to host an awareness session on waste and e-waste management with the aim to ensure that the knowledge resonates and spreads for generations to come. Thus, the Second Phase of the project Eco Bricks took place on March 7th, 2024 at Millaniya Devarakshitha College, Horana. The journey leading to this event was not without its challenges. The Poverty and Hunger team carefully chose a rural school in Horana, to educate students about waste and e-waste management. Our goal was to empower the next generation, as they are the future leaders who will carry forward this vital knowledge. Further, collaborations with the Central Environmental Authority in conducting the session added value to our purpose. The team understood the importance of making the session both informative and engaging. Therefore, they incorporated two interactive games, one is a Q&A challenge where questions were asked on the relevant topic. The children soon came into action trying to be the first to answer. They were incredibly active and eager. The next session was a fun activity where over 100 students were grouped, and they creatively displayed their talents by actualizing their ideas into innovative items using waste papers and other waste materials. Some students made dresses out of newspaper, while others made other creations with the use of plastic bottles, pots, wrappers etc. We were all impressed by their creative work. Not only was it enjoyable, but it also provided us with the insight that even waste can be transformed into something beautiful with efforts from the heart and soul. Later, prizes were awarded to the winners, further boosting their enthusiasm. This beautiful day ended with all of us capturing the moment. This session successfully concluded along with a heartfelt gratitude of the principal of the school. Looking back on the experience, all the members of the Poverty and Hunger Avenue gained valuable insights and lessons. Despite the challenges, the students' excitement showed us how vital it is to be engaging while being informative. Moreover, the session served as a reminder of the transformative power of collective action and community engagement in driving positive change. Moving forward, the team is committed to utilize these lessons to enhance their future initiatives and further cultivate a culture of environmental sustainability. ECO BRICKS PHASE 02 3221

Penned by: Leo Sevni Jayasinghe A Quest to Protect Mother Nature Project “Thuru” was organized for the third consecutive time by the Clean Water and Energy Conservation Avenue of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya. As the name itself implies, project “Thuru” focused on the well-being and the conservation of nature. This environmental endeavour was successfully completed under three significant phases, each phase carrying a novel experience. The First Phase entailed two segments of which its first segment was an awareness session on global warming conducted to a group of enthusiastic undergraduates. Implemented on the 24th of January, the session was led at the Climate Change Secretariat at the Sobadampiyasa, Ministry of Environment. This proved to be productive as all attendees found the session both informative and engaging.. The second segment of the first phase was a conservation activity implemented at the Yagirala Forest Reserve on the 5th of February, as a practical implementation of the session’s teachings. This was an open invitation to everyone willing to participate. With the guidance of the Divisional Forest Officer of Kalutara and other Forest Reserve officials, 100+ endemic plants were planted, contributing to its rich biodiversity. The officials also provided the opportunity to explore scenic landscapes within the forest reserve, having completed the plantation successfully. The journey amazed all participants, inspiring them to take part in more conservation activities while building up a profound connection with nature. The Second Phase was implemented on the 16th of February under the guidance of the Agriculture Development Officer of the Divisional Secretariat Office of Ingiriya, focusing on the field of greenhouse gardening. Initially, an informative session was organized to upcoming greenhouse gardeners by pioneers in the field, providing them the opportunity to learn and grow their greenhouses. Thereafter, as a part of the Second Phase, the team visited several greenhouses within the Ingiriya region to publish a documentary on YouTube, extending support to greenhouse gardeners outside Ingiriya. Several footage of greenhouses were shot along with short interviews with its owners and the video is now available on all social media platforms of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya. The Third Phase was implemented at the Kadawatha Central College on the 28th of February. Two awareness sessions were held on pollution management and schoolgardening practices by the Public Health Inspector of Mahara and the Agricultural Inspector of the Agrarian Service Center of Sooriyapaluwa, Kadawatha respectively. As a practical implementation, the students were thereafter divided into groups with the assistance of the teacher in charge for agriculture and plants were distributed for each student. Since the Organizing Committee visited the school beforehand and prepared the ground to allocate spaces for the plantation activities, the students easily planted all the plants within the school premises under the guidance of the agricultural inspector. Eventually, the students will be evaluated and awarded within two months. The principal expressed his gratitude over implementing an initiative of this nature in his school. Thus, the project came to a successful conclusion, having initiated three significant phases towards environmental conservation. The Clean Water and Energy Conservation Avenue of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya has proved to be an Avenue for spearheading projects that leave a profound impact on society. Undoubtedly, Project “Thuru” is a testament to that. Not only is it a defining moment of the spirit of Leoism, but also a reminder of the power of teamwork, that has empowered multiple communities, including the ecosystem at large. PROJECT THURU 33

Just as families gather during Ramadan to break their fasts together, the Sinhalese and Tamil communities come together during Avurudu. Traditional sweets like Aluwa, Kevum, and Kokis are shared, symbolizing unity and goodwill. These culinary delights connect people across cultural boundaries. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from food, drink, and other worldly pleasures. This act of self-restraint fosters empathy, compassion, and unity among believers. Similarly, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year encourages reflection and renewal, emphasizing the importance of self-discipline in the interim period called “Nonagathaya”. Lighting the hearth to cook milk rice at the start of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year signifies fresh beginnings. Similarly, the first fire lit during Ramadan represents hope, renewal, and blessings. Both traditions emphasize leaving behind the old and embracing the new. While these celebrations have distinct religious contexts, they share common themes of renewal, community, and gratitude. As Koha's melodious call fills the air, Sri Lankans of different backgrounds come together to celebrate life, hope, and the promise of a new season. Whether we follow the path of Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, or any other faith, our purpose remains the same: to create a world where love, compassion, and understanding prevail. Let’s cherish these harmonious moments, respecting each other's traditions, and may this unique convergence of Ramadan and the Sinhala-Tamil New Year bring joy, peace, and prosperity to all in this month of harmony. APRIL 2024 - A MONTH OF HARMONY… This April’s night sky is adorned with a dual-glow, as the Ramadan crescent and the New Year’s moon dance in a celestial embrace. Ramadan, the holy month for Muslims, is a time of joy, gratitude, and spiritual reflection. It falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and this year, it coincides with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April. In the convergence of Ramadan and the Sinhala-Tamil New Year, we witness a beautiful tapestry of diverse traditions woven together. As the crescent moon marks the beginning of fasting for Muslims, the Sinhalese and Tamil communities prepare for Avurudu, the dawn of a new year. These celebrations, though distinct in their religious contexts, share common threads of unity, renewal, and gratitude. Penned by: Leo Nayanamini Wijayasantha 34

The project Femina is a continuous project of the Women Empowerment Avenue of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya. This project mainly focused on the empowerment of women through enterprise development as well as uplifting the hygiene of women for low income families and supporting them to address the issue of poverty. The project proceeded in three phases. In the First Phase, we decided to conduct an awareness session to enhance knowledge and skills to navigate challenges posed by social media, drug related risks and the importance of self-defence to empower girls. This awareness session was held with the participation of more than 500 participants and it was held on 02nd February, 2024 at St. Paul's Girls’ School, Milagiriya. This awareness campaign consisted of four sessions conducted by experts in this field. Mr Manoj Samarasekara, the Chief Inspector of Police conducted a session on abuse and Mrs. Umeshika Karandana, a officer of National Child Protection Authority conducted a session about self-defence. A session about negative impact posed by social media and how to overcome those challenges was conducted by Ms. Hirushi Navanjana, a demonstrator of the University of Kelaniya. Ms. Meesha Mervyn, a demonstrator of the University of Kelaniya conducted a session about artificial intelligence. The Organizing Committee of the project Femina successfully completed these awareness session series and they received overwhelming positive feedback, with many attendees expressing their gratitude for the valuable information provided. In the Second Phase, the Organizing Committee decided to conduct a medical clinic, an awareness session about entrepreneurship and planned to donate sanitary napkins for a group of selected girls from low-income families. A medical clinic, thus, was held at the school premises and the General hospital of Kandy collaborated towards its success. Hotel Cinnamon gave a sponsorship as the Food and Beverage Partner and Himali Suraweera, the owner of Duriyanzila conducted the awareness session about entrepreneurship. We also donated sanitary napkins for girls in Madduma Bandara Vidyalaya. In the third phase we decided to launch a magazine at the end of this Leoistic term. "Femina" magazine is expected to launch with the intention of addressing a larger community. It consists of interviews carried out by strong female personalities. Apart from the magazine launch, we have planned to conduct a creative writing competition. The selected articles from the competition will be added to the magazine. Hence, the project “Femina” has witnessed successful completion of its two phases and looks forward to concluding the term with the Third Phase in a creatively triumphant way. The project NaCl+H2O 2.0 is a comprehensive initiative organized by the Wildlife and Animal Conservation Avenue of the Leo Club of the University of Kelaniya, consisting of two phases aimed at fostering the well-being of marine ecosystems while directly benefiting the surrounding communities. Focused primarily on preserving coral ecosystems, conserving sea turtles, and enhancing mangrove habitats, our project embodies a commitment to ecological sustainability and community prosperity. In the First Phase of our project, we organized two virtual webinar series to raise awareness among people about the importance of coral conservation and sea turtle conservation by identifying the lack of knowledge among the population. These webinars served as an excellent platform to educate the audience about the threats faced by these marine species and the measures that can be taken to protect them. During the Second Phase of our project, we conducted a coral plantation programme along the coastline of Mirissa Coconut Tree Hill Beach in Sri Lanka, recognizing the critical role coral reefs play in maintaining marine biodiversity and safeguarding coastal communities against natural disasters. Additionally, we completed beach and underwater cleanups, distributed community awareness leaflets, and displayed a community awareness banner. As part of our commitment to honouring maritime heritage and protecting the inhabitants of our coastal environment, NaCl+H2O 2.0 launched a sea turtle conservation programme at the Rekava Turtle Conservation Center and donated hats, red light torches, and bags to the Department of Wildlife Conservation to help conserve sea turtle eggs, ensuring the continued survival of these majestic creatures. In addition to coral reefs and sea turtles, our project emphasised the restoration and expansion of mangrove habitats by recognizing them as vital ecosystems that provide critical ecological services such as carbon sequestration, shoreline stabilisation, and nursery grounds for marine life. Penned by: Leo Gishani Chamodya Through our multi-faceted approach encompassing education, conservation, and community engagement, the project NaCl+H2O 2.0 strove to create a sustainable future where marine ecosystems thrive alongside human communities. As we reflect on the achievements of our project, we are inspired by the positive impact it has had on both the environment and the people it serves. Moving forward, we hope to remain committed to building upon these foundations, fostering a deeper connection between humanity and the natural world, and paving the way for more harmonious coexistence among all life forms on our planet.Together, let us strive to create a world where nature thrives, communities prosper, and future generations inherit a planet rich in biodiversity and beauty. The camp was unable to achieve its target number of participants due to the exam season and study leave periods of some faculties of the university. Additionally, financial issues posed a significant challenge, necessitating creative solutions such as launching a souvenir book to raise funds through advertisements. Despite these challenges, Leoninus'24 kept going and the event's success reflected the passion and dedication of both organizers and attendees. Leoninus'24 was more than just a youth camp; it illustrated the strength of community, teamwork, and endurance. As we contemplate the significance of this event, may it serve as inspiration for future attempts, illustrating that with dedication, anything is achievable. In a world increasingly impacted by the effects of climate change and natural disasters, we wanted to contribute, extending our helping hand to those who are suffering from natural disasters. The project "EcoAura 2.0", initiated by Healthcare Avenue, is a sincere effort to reduce the effects of natural disasters through a tree plantation campaign at Yahangala, in areas prone to natural disasters. The project aimed to contribute to disaster management by planting trees and paving the way for creating a safer environment and decreasing the risks of natural disasters. Our foremost aim was to enhance the health of our people and also our planet by providing a helping hand to reduce their issues by disaster management through the project “EcoAura 2.0”. Thus, the project “EcoAura 2.0”, a tree plantation was held on the 1st of April, at Yahangala with active participation from both Leos and non-Leos, as an impactful initiative, receiving positive feedback from participants and team members, emphasizing how small actions can collectively make a significant impact on our ecosystem. The progress was evident as a substantial number of plants were planted, contributing to environmental restoration efforts.
