Notes

Passiontide, culminating in the period from Palm Sunday to the Solemn Liturgy of
the Passion of our Lord, celebrated on Good Friday is, arguably, the richest period
of the Church’s year from a liturgical point of view and this is reflected in its music.
With the preferred absence of organ accompaniment during this period, chant is all
the more appropriate, particularly when it comes to the Palm Sunday procession
into Church, the Washing of the Feet on Holy Thursday and the Veneration of the
Cross on Good Friday.

The new English translation of the Third Edition Missale Romanum clearly
indicates where music should be sung and – in some instances – the translators
(ICEL) have provided a music setting of the English translation of the chant. These
may be found in this booklet where there are no stems to the notes (ICEL’s own
notation).

However, there are many chants for which music has not been provided and this is
where The Music Makers has stepped in. Included in this booklet are all the
chants as indicated in the new Missal from Palm Sunday through to Good Friday
both in Latin and English equivalents, which have been sensitively set as close as
possible to the original Latin chant. For the sake of ease, these have been set using
modern 5-line notation. Choirs therefore have a choice of singing these chants in
Latin or English, or a mixture of both.

It is not necessary to include all the psalm verses, when repeating the Antiphons,
just sufficient to cover the action of the liturgy.
