Subject Approach Critique
Tanong ni Totoy (Totoy's Question, 1981),
created by Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, portrays a mom
and her kid living in fear of their home being invaded
by martial law soldiers. It visualizes the idea of
release from concerns in women's imprisonment
following their desire for that independence showing
that the interiors and exteriors are interchangeable.
With this, it finds a connection in events taking place
in the social environment far beyond the field of
vision at the time.
Since the artist is a politics student, known for
her righteous and justice attitude towards her works,
it conveys the story behind perished anti-Marcos
activists, revolutionaries from the late-nineteenth-
century Philippine war for independence, and
forgotten women artists. The painting wants to bring
us back and reflect on the struggles of women and
children during martial law. The emotions and
feelings that the characters felt were emphasized
with the use of bloody and dark colors. This is
because of her intention to connect the audiences, as
well as herself to the subjects. Also, to construct a
connection with bodies of heroines separated by
place and history. And this painting is only one of her
paintings that depict women's engagement in
securing reforms in labor rights, agricultural
resources, and land ownership following the fall of
the Marcos regime.

MACASAET BUILDING
CRITIQUE
Macasaet Building is the most featured facility in San Pablo
Colleges (SPC). It is because of its location facing the
entrance of the school. And it is where the school's
symbolism in the form of Judge Paulo de Gala Macasaet's
statue is placed at the center of the building along with the
2 flags, the Philippine Flag and SPC Flag, on both sides. It
is for the people to see and recognize the pride of SPC as
they enter the campus. Judge Paulo de Gala Macasaet,
considered the father of this Golden Era of Renaissance,
was Chairman of the Board of Trustees and later College
President.
As for the structure of the building, the construction of the
walls is way more distinct from the other buildings that are
full-walled. It makes the Macasaet Building receive much
fresh air and have a good ambiance. The 3 storey building
was made to increase its occupant capacity since SPC has
thousands of students. And to also meet many common
spaces such as teaching spaces, staff spaces, large spaces,
and hallways while maintaining the safety of the staffs and
students. The use of multiple columns with steel railings in
between at a height not less than 1.50 meters for the
composition of its strong foundation and to comply with the
architectural design standards of DepEd. The color
combinations used were based on the school's color palette
of green, white, and yellow. Furthermore, the greenery
landscapes at the front of the building added to the overall
theme and ambiance making it pleasing to the eye.

The term “Hellenistic” refers to the period after the 5th century BC when the
Greek culture intermingled with Oriental influences and, with the political
instability that time, gave rise to a new set of “aesthetic ideals”.
Art became imbued with dynamism and movement. Emotion replaced
classical restraint and serenity. Agitation and violent passion contorted
physical features and strained muscles to a bursting point.

With the spread of Christianity Byzantine Art
throughout Europe, art and
architecture during the Byzantine era
followed a religious theme.
Paintings, mosaics, and sculptures
were common forms of artistic
expression.
Also important at this time were
illuminated bible manuscripts.
Gothic Art
Developing in France out the Romanesque
period, Gothic art begins with the construction
of monumental architecture.
Very ornately designed cathedrals with
luminous stained glass windows were commonly
constructed at this time.
Known as a period of "rebirth", this Renaissance
was a time when artists looked back to Art
ancient traditions while applying new
scientific knowledge.
The development of linear perspective
and a greater understanding of human
anatomy became two concepts that
would forever change the way that
artists render the natural world on a
two-dimensional surface.
Some of the most influential artists of
this time include Michaelangelo, Da
Vinci, Raphael, and Botticelli.
Common forms of artistic expression
during the Renaissance include
painting, fresco, and sculpture.
Centered around the church, art was commonly themed around religion,
mythology, and portraiture. However, the artists of the Renaissance were mainly
interested in capturing the essence and beauty of nature.
The Middle Ages marks a period between Classical and Modern history
(hence "middle").
It was at this time that Christianity was being spread throughout
Europe, and so art and architecture follows a religious tradition.
Middle Ages
Art
Following tradition at this time, the
Romanesque period is marked by lavishly
decorated architecture, manuscripts, and
embroidery.
Romanesque
Art
Medieval is a term used to describe the
art created over a span of 1,000 years
during the middle ages.
Art was largely produced at this time with
a variety of mediums including illuminated
manuscripts, paintings, sculptures,
stained glass, metal works, mosaics, and
even textiles.
Medieval Art
A reformation of art and architecture,
Neoclassical art sought to bring back
classical elements of the ancient Greeks
and Romans.
Art was now moving away from the
