ANNUAL
REPORT
2017

A NOTE
FROM DR. V

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Thank you for making 2017 another great year for
Family Outreach Center, Inc.!  This year marks our
38th year of providing services in West Michigan
with Kent County being our base of operation.  Our
dedicated staff has done an incredible job at
expanding our outreach while strengthening our
programs and services.
A few program highlights include:

• Serving more than 2800 children, adolescents, adults and families
• Expanding our work in area schools
• Receiving approval to serve younger African American males who are victims of violence
• Expanding services and the identification of a more central location in Muskegon County
• Grant awarded to provide services to those who are uninsured or under-insured
• Offering  additional social work training opportunities along with CEU’s for area professionals
One of our business goals is to keep our overhead low while increasing our service in the field.   Your
financial support helps to make this possible.   Family Outreach Center is strong due to the
generosity of our community who comes together to donate time, resources, and talent in support
of our important mission.   In addition to the quality clinical work we are most known for, we
provided 188 educational groups, presentations, workshops, and resource fair exhibitions this year
alone.
Our Board of Directors has and is helping us to increase our donor base and continually supports our
efforts to ‘reach out to strengthen family life’ for those who represent the underserved in the
community.
Thank you again for your interest in and support of Family Outreach Center, Inc.  We are looking
forward to achieving much more for the good of the community in the year to come!
Sincerely,

Dr. V

In 2017 Family Outreach Center continued to adopt Evidence Based
Treatments (EBT’s) into routine practices across programs.

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (TFCBT) has proven to
be beneficial in changing kids’ lives. Family Outreach Center trained 6
staff in 2017.  These staff joined our growing team of certified TFCBT
therapists in the Children’s In Home Services program.   The University
of California at Los Angeles Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Reaction
Index (UCLA-RI) is one of the most widely used instruments for the
assessment of traumatized children and adolescents.  Although the
instrument was not designed to make a formal diagnosis, it can provide
preliminary diagnostic information. Family Outreach Center tracks the
UCLA score at intake, mid-point and discharge.  Youth completing the
TFCBT program have shown a 53% decrease in trauma symptoms to
date.

In May 2017, 10 Children’s In-Home staff attended a regional clinical
training on TRAILS- Transforming Research into Action to Improve the
Lives of Students. TRAILS is the evidenced-based Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy (CBT) model for addressing anxiety and depression. Four staff
participated in a 12-week web - and phone-based support from a
TRAILS staff with the intent of becoming consultants for future coaches
beginning in 2018. This provides the opportunity to assist school
personnel in early and effective interventions for children and
adolescents with untreated mental illness.
The Seeking Safety Modification Project is serving a target population
of young African American males ages 14-24 who have been the victim
of violence.  The program is using a modified Seeking Safety curriculum
as part of a demonstration project with the U.S. Department of Justice
(DOJ) through its Office of Justice Programs and Office for Victims of
Crime (OVC).  The program is evaluated through Western Michigan
University who reports “The Project has successfully helped survivors
to increase their safe coping behaviors and reduced their PTSD
symptoms and the impact of these symptoms on their daily lives (e.g.,
relationships, school, and work).”  The program has successfully
graduated 79 young males to date.
During 2017 Family Outreach Center’s Outpatient Program has two (2)
additional staff trained in Eye Movement Reprocessing and
Desensitization (EMDR).  Family Outreach Center’s Outpatient
Counseling Program now has three (3) (EMDR) specialists.    EMDR
therapy is a cost-effective, non-invasive, evidence-based method of
psychotherapy that facilitates adaptive information processing.  EMDR
offers the life changing capacity to overcome the devastating effects of
psychological trauma.
The Outpatient and Adult Case management team trained seven (7)
staff to deliver acupuncture services for clients served at Family
Outreach Center.  Acupuncture can be useful through all phases of
addiction treatment. Staff were trained to utilize the NADA 5-point
treatment involving placing five needles into five points in each outer
ear and leaving them for about 30 minutes thus reducing cravings,
promoting  anxiety and stress relief, and reducing depression.

Family Outreach Center continues to be a leading provider of behavioral health
services in Kent County for low income and underserved members of our
community.
