DIRECTOR NOTE

When I was approached about directing this production, I hadn't seen it in
probably over 10 years. I could recall, however, in my mind, the image of Emma
Thompson in the starring role of Vivian (for the HBO film). I was only 16 when
that movie came out, and I remember being jarred by the thought of what
cancer can do to the body. I don't think I actually watched until I was around 20
or 21, but I was immediately struck by the use of humor...of wit... alongside
what can be a very dark subject matter. Flash forward to being asked to helm
this production. I immediately re-visited the work, reading the play and
watching the movie. And I was surprised to see how much more jumped out at
me this time around. Perhaps it is because I have lived more, so I can empathize
with these characters on a deeper level. That is how I approached working with
this cast. These performers are so incredibly thoughtful and insightful. They
brought such a raw honesty and a willingness to dig deep into these people.
Everyone working on this production, watching this production, reading the
play, watching the movie...we can all find a bit of ourselves in these characters.
Ms. Edson's writing so beautifully manages to encapsulate the grief process
through this myriad of characters. We see how it plays out for Vivian as all of
these characters interact with her, but we also see how it is relevant to us, as
we attempt to process the various adverse situations in our own lives...like this
unprecedented COVID pandemic. This piece is truly timeless, and I am honored
to be able to share this phenomenal cast and thought-provoking writing with
you.

Director of WIT / Associate Director of FCS
