From the Director

In this issue: 2018 Brings New Excitement to Western York
County! GYCC has 5 New Board Members and
• Directors Report will hold its board retreat at the end of this month,
• Annual Gala & Meeting where ideas and programs will be exchanged, and
• Happenings new committees and initiatives will be formed to
• Upcoming Events create a year full of learning, engagement and
connections for all our members and the communi-
ty. The York Economic Development Corporation

has held public forums with their consultant Jason Broadwater and is now in
the final phase of creating a strategic plan for the city. This plan will ensure
that everyone is on the same page and we can begin to take the steps to en-
hance the community. The County is currently researching Agri Tourism and
the possibility of building something to showcase it in the county. The Annual
Gala & Meeting is at the end of the month followed by the Legislative Break-
fast. We have a new morning engagement series call Morning Brew that will
kick off next month.

menu like this!

Appetizers: Crawfish Bread - slices of grilled ba-
guettes, topped with sautéed crawfish tails,
minced green onions, garlic and melted mozzarel-
la. Boudin Balls - similar to fried hush puppies but
made with rice, w/minced peppers, garlic and bits
of grilled pork. Crab & Artichoke Dip.
Charcuterie/cheese platter w/ pickled okra, sliced
prosciutto, smoked almonds and dried fruits.
Entrée: Gumbo - with crab, S.C. Shrimp,
andouille sausage, grilled quail & chicken, and
okra over a bed of Anson Mills Carolina Gold rice
w/toasted garlic bread. Sides: Hoppin’ John black
eyed peas. Grilled corn salad.

7th Annual MLK Breakfast

The Mt. Zion AME Church Choir from Hickory Grove, SC performs at the Martin Luther King Jr.
Breakfast Celebration.
The Seventh Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast was held today at the First
Presbyterian Church in York, SC. The Mistress of Ceremonies was Wanda Reid with the Rever-
end Matt Burrell of Liberty Baptist Church in York giving the invocation and blessing of the food.
Breakfast was prepared and served by the YCHS Culinary Arts department.
After breakfast Councilmember Denise Lowry welcomed everyone to the event. Mayor Eddie Lee
spoke and there was music by the Mt. Zion AME Church Choir from Hickory Grove, SC. The Key-
note Speaker was the Reverend Kinston Jones, the Minister of White Hill AME Church in York,
SC. The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast is sponsored by the City of York.

The Men’s Shop Honored

On Wednesday January 10th, Mayor Eddie Lee held a presentation honoring the
Men’s Shop and recognizing the contribution of the Bailes family, which includes the late
Furman Bailes, (Ronnie’s father), Ruby Bailes (Ronnie’s 93 year old mother), Hazel
Bailes Somerville (Ronnie’s sister), and Norma Bailes Hoffman (Ronnie’s other sister), to
Downtown York after 70 years of service. Ronnie Bailes was presented with the “Key to
the City” along with a proclamation which designated January 10th as “The Men’s Shop
Day”.
Employees of the City of York, City Council, York School District 1 were among the many
dignitaries attending the presentation.

GYCC Annual Christmas Party

The mood was Jolly at this years GYCC Christmas Party! Gifts for the elderly
were generously donated by members for the residents of White Oak here in York!

Christmas In Olde York

Christmas In Olde York was kicked off with the
“Lighting of the Tree” with the High School choral
group singing Christmas favorites and Julie’s Fancy
Feet dancers performing. Then it was off to the Sip
N Shop Downtown! The “Gingerbread House” con-
test showed off some fantastic local talent. The pa-
rade participates and spectators braved the rain and
chilly temperatures and Santa wished everyone a
Merry Christmas! Christmas in Dixie at the Sylvia
was a huge success! The week capped off with the
Historic Home tour! It showcased 4 beautiful homes
and had over 600 participants.
