Clara's Journal

June 25, 1884 (Clara's side)

I woke up hearing the boats.I ran outside to see people getting forced on these ships my mother
was screaming my name as I ran towards her and my family.Then we were grabbed and forced on
the boat.We spent days there all bunched up and uncomfortable.We got barely any food and some
got sick and passed away.When we got off we were given a new name,I think mine was something
like Clara.I was sent on this stage where people shouted things untill I guess one shouted
something right and took me away.I found out what they were doing, they were bidding us! I saw
my mother and father crying as I was taken away and that was the last day that I ever saw my
family agen.

June 25, 1884 (slave owner side)

My wife and I just saved $40,000 enough so we could get a slave.We went to bid and at the
time they were selling a 20 year old girl,good she shall be strong and shall last us a long
time.We yelled a high price and they chose us to take her.I am so happy now I don't have to
stay in the hot sun and I can do other things.We will also get money faster and may get more.
Life is so great.I cant wait to get home.

July ,1884 (Clara's side)

It has been a month I could not take it any more. This night I planned to escape. I
need to get to canada. In the middle of the night I got my things and ran.I did not care
what was behind me.I did not care how many dogs were barking I did not care who saw I
did not even care if I could make it.I just ran until i could run no more.I went up in a
tree and waited until I could not hear the dogs anymore.Then I went to sleep.

July,1884 (slave owner side)

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! She decided to run away after all I do for her.I give her decent food
clean water a shelter.All I ask in return is for her to take care of my crops.But nope thats not
enough for her she wants more.Now my family has to suffer we dont have a lot of money
because we spent it all on getting her.I have to get a slave catcher *sigh* our savings for a
secound slave shall be gone.Why did our slave disided to run away I probly treat her alot better
than some would.What am I going to do

August 10 1884

As starting in Louisiana my Master has noticed that I left and he has sent bounty hunters and

dogs. Does he really have to overreact just because I ran away does not mean he has to PaY

money to get me back. It’s not necessary.He has lots money he can buy lots more slaves. I had to
run through swamps and marshes, jumping in ditches, waiting ‘till the bounty hunters pass I had to
find a way to get rid of my stench so I could be hidden.Ah HA a stream! I ran during the night
and slept during the day. Once when I think I was in Tennessee I heard the gunshot as a bullet
went past my head. I am starting to get low on food.The dogs don't make anything easier.I just
hope I can make it to Ohio on time.

August 10 1884 (slave catcher side)

I was told that one of the plantations slaves needed to be catched and wow is it
a high price for me to get it.I got seven of my dogs my gun and a net and went
searching.I saw it.She was running through the lake.I tell my dogs to go and run
after her. But her stench soon wore off and we could not find her any more we
kept on walking hoping to hear something but it was a day with nqqqqo pay.Later
when I went searching for her in Tennessee I almost shot her but it went right
past her head.

September 1848, (Slave side)

Finally I’m here in Ohio. I made to a station. Soon I should see family here. It’s been months from
the last time I saw my family. I need to see my family again. In the station I meet Ms the
station master. She's really nice. She told me I may see my family in a week. If not she would go
look for them. Until then I will stay with her.

One week later

They're here they're here! Finally my Family made it. We can’t wait to get to Canada. There we will
be free. I’m just so happy to see my family again. Canada here we come.

September 1848, (station master side)

Today another slave came. She told me her name was Clara and she was looking for
her family. She may she her family again. I hope they show. If they did not show up I
would look for them. Looking for slaves and not being a border ruffian. I may get caught,

but I will do it for some slaves. Clara kind reminds me of me. All she wants is her
family no matter how hard it is. Yep she is me. I hope she makes it.
