We Know Onions!

Being in business for 105 years is something
that few companies can celebrate. We know
that we couldn’t accomplish this milestone
without great products, knowledgeable and
friendly staff, and a commitment to our
customers. We are farmers, first and
foremost, and that separates us from many
other companies. We know that we don’t
have the luxury of pulling a product off of
a shelf and selling it so even when Mother
Nature is unkind, we must come through on
growing the crop. We want to thank each of
our customers who recognize and appreciate
all of our hard work. That is what keeps us
going and looking forward to continuing this
farming legacy. Our staff is here to clear up
any misunderstanding to take out the mystery
of growing onions. Our goal is for our customers

Choosing the Right Varieties for Your Area

Onion plants have two growth phases. At first, they focus on growing roots and leaves. This is
important because the size of a mature onion is determined by the size of the tops. Each leaf
corresponds to a “ring” of onion, so lots of large leaves become lots of large rings. The
second growth phase is bulb formation, which is triggered by a specific combination of daylight,
darkness, and temperature. Choosing onion varieties that are adapted to your growing region
ensures bulb formation will happen at the proper time to give you the best possible results.

Storage Tip: Three areas to watch when curing onions: the roots, the outside layer of skin, and

the neck. After pulling the onions out of the ground, wait to trim the tops until you don’t feel any moisture at
the base of the neck when rubbing it between your thumb and forefinger.

Mesh Netting (MN)

The perfect way to keep onions garden-fresh for later
use. Approximately 9 ft. of mesh netting stores 10-12

EXCLUSIVE Onion Fertilizers for Planting
All bags are resealable!

Dixondale Farms Onion Special 10-20-10 (FERT)

Micronutrients such as copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo),
manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) are all required in small amounts
in onions, but have a large impact on their growth and yield.
Unlike the major nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorous
(P), and potassium (K) that can easily accumulate and be replaced
in the soil, micronutrients do not accumulate and must be added
annually. Lack of these micronutrients may cause stunting after transplanting. The crucial period
for application is during the initial growing period so be sure to apply this product in your soil
before planting!
4 lb. bag (treats 200 ft. of row or approx. 20 bunches) $19.95 12 lb. bag (treats 600 ft. of row or approx. 60 bunches) $39.95

Directions: Prepare your beds and dig a 4 in. deep by 4 in. wide trench. Sprinkle 1 cup of fertilizer per 20 linear ft. of row.
Cover the fertilizer with soil. Plant the onions 6 in. from the edge of the trench on both sides of the trench. Do not plant
the onions in the trench since the fertilizer will burn the young roots and cause the plants to die. The roots will grow to the
fertilizer once the plant gets established.

Insect & Disease Prevention

Most onion plant diseases are preventable when you use the appropriate fungicides and
insecticides. Using the growing solutions we offer will keep your plants healthy and
produce bountiful crops of delicious onions.

Mancozeb Fungicide with Zinc (MF) is a broad spectrum, protectant

fungicide that prevents fungal and bacterial spores from forming
on your leaves. These spores will be transferred to the bulbs creating
decay and unusable bulbs. Contains zinc, iron, and manganese to
keep tops healthy after spraying. Effective in controlling common
onion diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, blight,
neck rot, purple blotch, and botrytis. Can be used on almost all
fruits and vegetables.
1 pint (treats 30 bunches for an entire season) $18.95 2 or more $16.95 each

Directions: Mix 2-3 tsp. with a gallon of water in a hand sprayer and spray until tops are
thoroughly saturated (approximately 150 ft. of a single row). Start spraying on a

weekly basis 3 weeks after planting and continue until tops start to fall over.

18 For large bulbs, fertilize every 3-4 weeks with a good source of nitrogen.

Aids After Planting

Nitrogen is the element that encourages plants to produce foliage. Feeding your onions
with a high nitrogen based fertilizer every 3-4 weeks until bulbing will produce larger bulbs.

Weed Control

Treflan Herbicide Granules (TG)

Onions do not like to compete with weeds. Treflan granules prevent 27
different grasses and weeds in your garden. This is a pre-emergent herbicide
which does not kill weeds, but prevents them from germinating.

plants are going to be planted so you keep weeds completely out of the area. Incorporate
into the top 3 in. of soil by raking or tilling and then plant transplants in the treated soil.
Can be reapplied every 4 weeks by sprinkling and raking into the soil.

AzaGuard Organic Insecticide (AZA) is an organic, non-toxic insecticide for

controlling thrips and onion maggots, which are the two most common insects in
onions. AzaGuard is a growth regulator that prevents molting between larval, pupal,
and nymphal stages of onion thrips and onion maggots and also repels insects on
treated crops.

OxiDate Organic Fungicide (OXD) offers powerful disease control for all vegetable

plants. To prevent disease, you must kill spores. These spores are so small that they
cannot be seen with the naked eye. Proven effective on killing fungal and bacterial
spores on contact while being eco-friendly. Leaves no chemical residue behind. May
be used as a preventative and curative treatment on any type of fruit or vegetables.

TEn Ways to Ensure
a Great onion Crop

★ 1 Choose the right varieties for your area and plant
at the proper time. Refer to our ZIP Code Chart

on the order form.

2 Select a planting location with full sun, good
drainage, and no disease history. Make sure to
rotate your crops every year.

3 Prepare your onion beds early so that a few crops
of weeds can be flushed and tilled prior to planting.

★ 4 Apply a pre-emergent fertilizer and herbicide
prior to planting (pages 18-19). This will help your

onions get a good start in a weed-free environment.

★ 5 When your plants arrive, remove them from the
box, cut the rubberband, and spread out plants in

a well ventilated, cool area until you plant. Do not put
them in soil or water.

★ 6 Water after planting. Use the “knuckle rule” to
determine when to water during the season. If

you can’t feel moisture up to your first knuckle when
you stick your finger in the ground, then it’s time to
water. Onions require 20 to 22" of water per season.
Use drip or furrow irrigation rather than an overhead
sprinkler system, which may promote the rapid spread
of disease.

7 Use a high source of nitrogen (21-0-0 or Omega
Grow - see page 19) every three weeks until the
onions start to bulb.

★ 8 Spray weekly with a protective fungicide to
prevent foliar diseases and rotting during storage.

You won’t notice there is a problem with the disease
until it is too late and they start rotting in storage
(see page 18-19).

9 When the tops start to fall over, lift the onions out
of the ground. Place the top of one onion over the
bulb of another to let the tops dry in the field. Clip the
tops once you are able to squeeze the neck and not feel
any moisture.

10★ Store the onions in a cool, dry, well-ventilated
location. Place them in mesh bags or netting to

permit air flow all around the onion and prevent one
rotten onion from touching the others (see page 17).
