2019 Dixondale Catalog - Final

2019 Dixondale Catalog - Final

Choosing the Right Varieties for Your Area

Onion plants have two growth phases. At first, they focus on growing roots and leaves. This
is important because the size of a mature onion is determined by the size of the tops. Each leaf
corresponds to a “ring” of onion, so lots of large leaves become lots of large rings. The
second growth phase is bulb formation, which is triggered by a specific combination of daylight,
darkness, and temperature. Choosing onion varieties that are adapted to your growing region
ensures bulb formation will happen at the proper time to give you the best possible results.

Micronutrients such as copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo),
manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) are all required in small
amounts in onions, but have a large impact on their
growth and yield. Unlike the major nutrients such as
nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K) that can
easily accumulate and be replaced in the soil, micronutrients
do not accumulate and must be added annually. Lack of
these micronutrients may cause stunting after transplanting. The crucial period for application is
during the initial growing period so be sure to apply this product in your soil before planting!

Directions: Prepare your beds and dig a 4 in. deep by 4 in. wide trench. Sprinkle 1 cup of fertilizer per 20 linear ft. of row.
Cover the fertilizer with soil. Plant the onions 6 in. from the edge of the trench on both sides of the trench. Do not plant
the onions in the trench since the fertilizer will burn the young roots and cause the plants to die. The roots will grow to the
fertilizer once the plant gets established.
