BUC Beginnings
Describe the format of an ordered pair {i.e (3, 6)} and
how to graph it.
Linear Functions
Relation:
Definition: A set of ordered pairs (x, y)
Characteristics: Ordered pairs
Mapping diagram
table
graph
Examples:
Function:
Definition: A relation that assigns EXACTLY one “y”
with each “x” (x only has one partner)
Characteristics: EVERY function is a relation.
Example:
Function vs Non Function
1. Cut out the function/not function sheet.
2. Cut apart the cards and sort them into function or not
function
3. Check your answers, then glue the cards onto the
function/not function sheet.
4. Glue into your notebooks.

Domain and Range
Domain of a relation is the set of all inputs or x-
coordinates
Range of a relation is the set of all outputs or y-
coordinates
D: {-9 ≤ x ≤ 3}
R: {-3 ≤ y ≤ 9}
Practice
Glue in half of your graph paper; grab 4 colors
Geogebra practice
Practice 4 functions (use the link above)
1. Draw each function on your graph paper with a
different color
2. State the Domain and Range for each function
Characteristics of a
graph
X&Y Relative
intercepts Maximums
and
minimums
Increasing Zeros, roots,
and solutions, x-
decreasing intercepts
intervals
x & y intercept door (inside)
The x-intercept is the point where the graph crosses the x-axis
The y-intercept is the point where the graph crosses the y-axis
Increasing and Decreasing Intervals door (inside)
A function is increasing on an interval if the y-value increases
with the x-value
A function is decreasing on an interval if the y-value
decreases while the x-value increases
Relative Maximum and Minimum
The relative maximum is the highest y-value of a particular
region.
The relative minimum is the lowest y-value of a particular
region.
Zeros, Roots, Solutions , x-intercepts
X-intercepts, roots, solution and zeros are all names that
describe the x-value of a graph whose corresponding y-value
is zero.
