SOUTHWEST CHRISTIAN SCHOOL | SCS Life 3

Insights Brian Johnson

Shortly after arriving at SCS, I met a colleague from an area school who
offered a number of compliments about Southwest Christian, based on
her many years of living in Fort Worth. When I mentioned something
about the Lakeside Campus, she asked, incredulously, “You’ve got a lake?”

This incident was neither the first, nor the last opportunity for me to see
people surprised who thought they knew SCS. I’m regularly amazed by the
energy and dedication of our students, families, and faculty and staff… and
I’m not alone. Recently, SCS hosted visiting professionals from a number of
schools as part of our five-year re-accreditation process, and they echoed this
observation. SCS stands out, not just because the three pillars of our tag-line
reflect what we’re actually doing: “Academically Excellent, Globally Minded,
Distinctively Christian.” The school is more than a collection of outstanding
programs, activities, and facilities. Southwest Christian School soars because
it’s a community where Christ is alive. With this magazine, I’m thrilled that
we’re able to provide you with a glimpse into life at SCS.

This year’s theme, “All In,” aptly describes the commitment to our school’s
mission that I’ve seen in the classrooms and hallways, on the stage and
playing field, in public places and private conversations. In my experience
with schools all over the country, I know that it’s easy to focus on what we do
in schools and lose sight of why. Therefore, I’m grateful that from the trustees
to the students, we can all see our work as expressions of Christ’s love and
gifts. Our mission at SCS is “to provide a Christ-centered college preparatory
education that graduates young adults equipped as Christian leaders in the
world.” Each element of the program, therefore, must spring from that why.

Simon Sinek’s book Start with Why also notes that most effective
organizations are clear about how they accomplish their mission, and SCS
embraces its defining commitments to learning and growth, to the spiritual
development of the students, and to supporting healthy relationships. Few
schools are as deliberately attentive to these three features that make up our
how.

With SCS Life, we’ve tried to give you an accurate picture of this vibrant
community. I hope you find joy in the surprises you discover about the
school you already know. As you peruse the pages, I pray that you see in all
the accolades and events, the photographs and the prose, evidence of our
school’s heart and values. We are a community of hundreds of individuals
striving to fulfill one mission: equipping Christian leaders and helping to put
them in position to impact the world for Christ.

I came that they may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10).

Students become the canvas, WNEorekwvs Aenrtt

scenes of famous artworks

The SCS Visual Arts Department
ended the fall semester with a
show titled the New Works Art
Event. The production incorporated
collaborative works using various art
forms, including painting, sculpture,
lighting design, and performance
art. The students used these
media to portray some of the most
influential artists and their works in
the history of visual art. Depicting
artists such as Van Gogh, Warhol,
Dali, Picasso, Seurat, and Pollock,
the students were able to bring
six masters and their art to life.

The show was the brainchild
of SCS Arts Chair, Kimberlea Bass,
who envisioned a transformation
of the students themselves into
the works of art. She imagined they
would become the canvas, covered
in paint from head to toe, thus
creating life-size scenes of famous
artworks. She presented her idea
to the officers of SCS’ National Art
Honor Society, and the excitement
and bright ideas grew from there.

The students spent most of
November preparing backdrops,
building papier-mâché pieces and
painting clothing to help bring
the art scenes to life. Students
participating in all levels of
the art program were involved
with the creation of the event,
including students enrolled in the
Lakeside Art Academy, middle
school, Art Foundations, Art 1,
Advanced Art, and AP Art. They
created Art History board games,
papier-mâché for Dali’s melted
clocks and backgrounds of all the
environments, the small painting
that hung on the wall in Van Gogh’s
bedroom, and the painted outfits
that were worn by the performance
artists. The department’s AP Art
students also served as directors
for the show. In all, more than
100 artists created the magic,
with 100 percent of SCS’ AP Art
students and National Art Honor
Society students participating.

With more than 300 people
in attendance, the New Works
Art Event was the largest Visual
Art event in Southwest Christian
School’s history. Congratulations
to our visual art students and
teachers on this huge success!

Craig Smith, Associate Head of School

DEAR SCS
Family & Friends
The 2016-17 school year was a time of growth and success for
Southwest Christian School. There were many highlights, in-
cluding graduating a stellar senior class that also happened to be
our largest ever at 81 members.

Lives were changed and affected for good–in the classroom, on the
athletic field, during Minimester trips, during service projects, in our
students’ relationships with each other and with Christ, above all.

Our faculty showed amazing commitment again to each students’
success–all 782 of them last year–through their time and devotion in
and outside of the classroom.

God blessed us to build momentum for enrollment growth and supporters from our SCS community, including parents,
grandparents, teachers, alumni and friends, donated $1,911,174 to our school. We were humbled to see our families and
friends make philanthropy to our school a priority.

As you read through this report, know that God has been faithful to His school. The numbers tell part of the story but the
story will ultimately be told in the lives of our current students and graduates who will change the lives of others.

Thank you for partnering with SCS and making a difference now and for years to come.

Sports Recap CHEER TEAMS

The SCS Cheer teams did an impressive job this year cheering on fans and athletes during athletic competitions.
The team has continually worked hard to perform a routine at every pep rally and lead dedicated fans in
cheers during football season. SCS Cheer also competed this fall at the TAPPS Cheer Competition where they
grew together as a team and competed well. The cheerleaders accomplished a great deal this year as a team.

The following cheerleaders received TAPPS honors: Sophie Smith - Division 1 All State Cheerleader,
Patty Beth Austin, Darby Beeson - Division 2 All State Cheerleaders.

FOOTBALL

Football got off to a great start in 2017 with the Eagles beating Trinity Valley School in the first-ever Dog Bowl game
benefiting Animal Hope Adoptions. In the first five games of the season, our defense only gave up 13.2 points a game
and had two shutouts. The Eagle offense averaged 36.6 points per game. Despite being plagued with injuries to key
players beginning week one and being outsized almost every week, this team had a six-win season
(first time in nine years, first time ever since moving to Division 2), a winning season (first time in
13 years, first time ever since moving to Division 2), secured a playoff berth for the second time in
two years, was ranked in the top 10 for TAPPS, and was ranked number five in the state for small
private schools. Without a doubt, this group never stopped fighting and became champions in
their own right. The 2017 varsity team was led by a great senior group and five captains
voted on by their teammates -- David Cowley, Luke Johnson, Jason Norman, Ethan
Thomas, and Branson Wilson. Overall, the team finished 6-5 for the season.

Congratulations to the following players

runners set new personal records this season, and although the team faced its
toughest district competition yet, the varsity and junior varsity runners worked
hard to bring home two more district championship titles. At the district meet,
Emma Fitzgearld was honored for her service and dedication to the team by
receiving the Connor Gage Fifth Man Award; she is the first SCS student to be
given this award. The team also improved upon last year’s finish at the TAPPS State
Cross Country Championship Meet by finishing in ninth place out of 23 teams. In
addition to setting a new school record for the fastest 5K, Sarah Iannelli received
TAPPS Academic All-State honors and finished in the top ten at the state meet.

VOLLEYBALL

The SCS Volleyball teams had a lot of ups and downs during the 2017 season.
Our JV team members this year were the kind of athletes that a coach hopes
for, hardworking and ready to learn. While the scoreboard may not have
always been in their favor, they never lost their spirit and continued to fight until
the end. While the varsity team’s season did not go as many hoped it would, several
positives came out in the end. Several players earned all-district honors, and Madi
Monte broke every school defensive record for SCS. Her new school volleyball records
include most digs in a single match, most digs in a season, and most career digs.

The following athletes received TAPPS honors:
Madison Monte - First Team (District)
Ajani Hodges, Abby Vuduris - Second Team (District)
Katie Gear, Megan Holley, Jillian Norman - Honorable Mention (District)
