The formation of the Choma Nursery Association was facilitated by the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) and the Forestry Department in 2017. The Project facilitated mobilization of local people interested in establishing and managing tree nurseries as a business. Eleven (11) groups were identified in Mbabala, Popota, Sibanyati, Chipande, Mochipapa, Zambia Compound, Riverside, Kabimba and Kaweyani areas. In 2017, these groups came together and formed the Choma Tree Nursery Association (CTNA) comprising 36 small holder tree nursery producers Formation of Choma Tree Nursery and Growers Association The Vision To improve forest cover through the raising of 10 million tree seedlings for woodlots establishment from nurseries in Coma district by 2030 Aims The primary aim of the Nursery Association is to produce sufficient quantities of high quality assorted seedlings to satisfy the needs of customers. Objectives The objectives of the Association and individual member nurseries focus on producing assorted Seedlings to meet local markets, by facilitating trade and supplying to its members and the general public. Product Promotion and Marketing The Association is alive to the fact that an important factor in a nursery's success is effective promotions and marketing. Product promotion (seedlings) and services (training, landscaping) is done through various media (radio, local electronic newspapers, social media, brochures, agricultural fairs, and other events) and interpersonal channels. Seed Quality and Management Quality seed is one of the key factors in producing quality trees and attracting and maintaining customers. Therefore seeds the Association uses for seedling production are collected by individual members or purchased and originate from selected superior and proven seed tree sources and seed orchards. Choma Tree Nursery Association Projected Production The CTN Association anticipates a big market growth in the next five years and has projected a total seedling production of 1,300,000 in the next five years (i.e. 40% of total estimated market demand for the next five years). Gerbera jamesonii varieties Barberton daisy Gerberas are small perennials that are produced in a variety of bright cheerful colours. Their happy daisy like flowers create brilliant splashes of colour in pots or in the front of garden beds and are loved by butterflies and insects. If cared for correctly they have a long blooming period and make wonderful cut flowers. Gerberas will cope in sun or semi shade but will not perform well in hot summer sun. Although they are heat tolerant it is best during the summer months to keep them away from excessively hot and dry conditions and provide them with some shade in a well ventilated spot that has good light. If planting to fill a garden bed ensure spacing between plants is approximately 35 cm to prevent overcrowding. They make good indoor plants and will cope well on a sunny windowsill, if using indoors be sure to ensure regular watering and a well drained pot. Gerbera jamesonii varieties do best with regular watering when planted in garden beds, once established watering can be reduced. They enjoy a well drained compost enriched soil to ensure a continual flush of flower stems, feed every 6 months with Atlantic Flower and Fruit to ensure large blooms and intense colour. To encourage repeat flowering remove dead flower heads. Use Gerbera jamesonii as borders in garden beds or in containers and flower boxes. They are buck resistant and so are perfectly suited to rural gardening. Gerbera Jamesonii Cartwheel Strawberry Twist has large, semi-double blooms in a mix of distinctive colours which range from buttery yellow with a hint of pink to deep strawberry with a hint of yellow. They are multi-blooming, vigorous plants that reach a mature height and width of 40 cm x 30cm. Gerbera Jamesonii Revolution Mix Mega produces very large uniform flowers in a mix of bold bright colours that include pink, red, yellow, white and apricot. They have an upright growth habit and reach a mature height and width of 25 x 35 cm. PAGE14 | GARDENING MAGAZINE 2023
