Historia: Adventures Book

The Battle of the Scarlet Bight GIUDITTA FROM BIANCOLIDO Puma Goffredo’s second-born, younger sister of Guglielmo the Young, has shown an aptitude for combat and sword use since childhood, and as soon as she was of age, was immediately appointed as leader of the Biancolido armed forces. She is currently secretly involved in a relationship with a member of the rival family, Franzisco Lamellino, who she happened to meet during a reconnaissance mission, and saved from certain death by drowning in the river. Personality: ‘A warrior guided by their conscience serves all, one not guided by conscience serves only themselves.’ Ideal: ‘I would like to live my life with Franzisco.’ Bond: ‘I am the sole maker of my destiny.’ Flaw*: ‘I always respect my father, even when I disagree with his orders.’ CORINNA LAMELLINO Lynx The countess of Cirocca, as charming as she is unstoppable, has been forced to show her valor and wisdom since the death of Oreste Lamellino, so as not to lose her title after her father’s failed assassination plot. She has been able to maintain hold of the port of Albea bight with great skill and during the time of forced truce imposed by the Confederation. Though her troops hold a tactical advantage, they are much smaller in number than those of Biancolido, and less prepared. Personality: ‘I shake hands with my right and carry a knife in my left.’ Ideal: ‘I wish to be recognized in my leadership.’ Bond: ‘I can offer you a way out, but only once.’ Flaw*: ‘I alone can make my destiny.’

IVANA LINGUATORTA Cat Ivana Linguatorta is an enigmatic figure in the fight between the two counties, and she has gained her name (lit. ‘Twisted tongue’) from Rolando of Acquascura thanks to her ability to poison the minds of those she speaks to, turning events in her favor. This thickly red-furred cat can be found in the towns around the Albeo river and is known by a variety of different names. At the Biancolido court, she is known as Shadow, and is Goffredo’s most trusted confidant; in Cirocca’s palaces, her name is Fiammetta, the fiery, gossipy adviser to countess Corinna Lamellino. The general population is not immune to her workings; the streets know her as Mimì, the person who takes care of young urchins from either city. Ivana was the one to organize Gugliemo the Young’s kidnapping, and directing the blame towards Cirocca. At the same time, she has poisoned the mind of Corinna Lamellino to make her believe that Goffredo would be willing to sacrifice his own son in order to have an excuse to attack the ruling Cirocca family. She plans to bring the two cities to open combat only to reveal they have been manipulated by the Holy Kingdom, so that they may put aside their rivalries and join in an alliance – one which will threaten both the Holy Kingdom and the cities of Nova Marina and Liveccia. Personality: ‘Appearances deceive only the mediocre.’ Ideal: ‘They took away all of my certainties, I will take away all of theirs.’ Bond: ‘I always have the right face for the occasion.’ Flaw*: ‘Everyone must respect me, at all times.’ CREATING A NEMESIS FOR THE PARTY It might be useful for the GM to create a nemesis for the PCs during this adventure. The goal is to set this enemy as their counterpart in the rival city, to add personal stakes to the wider story. Alternatively, the nemesis may be created along with the PCs and the table can use a flashback to explain how the hostility between the PCs and these other characters was born, using Ideals and Flaws as a starting point. The character(s) then, will only be referred to as ‘nemesis’ during the following adventure, though there may be multiple characters in the role, depending on the table’s or GM’s decisions. FRANZISCO LAMELLINO Linx Theoretically the heir of Cirocca, Franzisco Lamellino has been appointed as the leader of the armed forces by his mother, Corinna Lamellino, who much prefers her daughter Elisabetta to him. Solitary and reserved, he was alone when he fell into the river, at risk of drowning due to his heavy armor. His debt of honor to Giuditta from Biancolido, who saved him from certain death, has become a relationship kept secret from the entire Lamellino family. This has also worsened his relationship with his mother, effectively making their familial bond into one purely between countess and captain of the guard. Personality: ‘Truth cannot harm a just cause.’ Ideal: ‘I want to live with those to whom I can be truthful.’ Bond: ‘Cirocca and its people deserve a prosperous future.’ Flaw*: ‘I always feel like opposing and overturning the countess’ orders.’ ELISABETTA LAMELLINO Linx Younger sister to Franzisco and last daughter of Corinna, Elisabetta is a teenager currently learning everything she can from her mother; her conversation and administration skills grow by the day and her mother is certain to appoint her as leader when the time comes. Elisabetta, however, is more scrupulous than her mother; her conscience is louder and she holds much more respect for her older brother. She yields to her mother’s wishes but she is still young, and her personality has time to find its own path. Personality: ‘I want to find out what I’m capable of.’ Ideal: ‘I want people to recognize my worth.’ Bond: ‘I always try mediating my family’s tensions.’ Flaw*: ‘I am constantly worried that I’m not up to the task, and I freeze.’

The Battle of the Scarlet Bight INTRODUCTION: WHOSE ALLIES? The adventure has been designed to offer the PCs an opportunity to play a relevant part. no matter which story they might come to agree upon. For this reason, the structure expects them to choose a faction, siding with either Goffredo or Corinna, while one of their rivals ends up allying themselves with the opposite faction. Both parties have several reasons to be seen as despicable: Goffredo is blinded by rage and craves the annihilation of his rivals out of revenge; Corinna is subtle and ruthless and has been waiting for a chance to strengthen her faction by breaking the famous military power of Biancolido. On the other hand, Goffredo is attempting to save (or should it come to it, avenge) his beloved son Guglielmo the Young, while Corinna wishes to free her city from a tyrant who has oppressed neighboring counties for too long. Each party has its own merits and flaws and are respectively supported by Nova Marina and Liveccia, who are both hoping to cause a loss to their rivals through their allies. The PCs have been chosen by Goffredo or Corinna, depending on which faction is the most suitable to the group and their previous exploits, to conduct a delicate investigation against the rival city and its powers. The scene will begin in the relevant city’s palace, after the expected formalities, during which the ruler will explain the situation. GOFFREDO’S SPEECH Today is a dark day, which will be remembered as the beginning of the end: cowards and traitors have kidnapped my son! With no shame, in the light of day, with no care towards hiding their colors and loyalties! And… I apologize, I cannot remain calm after what happened: my son Guglielmo has been taken in the area of the Albeo port, as he was conducting a final check of the latest shipment. My informants tell me that it was Cirocca soldiers. I request that you investigate and discover where my Guglielmo is kept, and ensure those who did this are punished. Giuditta, prepare the troops! There is commotion among the people already, we do not wish someone other than our men to fire the opening salvo now, do we? MAIN LOCATIONS WHITESHORE Biancolido was always the main trade center for the northern coast of the Confederation, famous for its market acting as a central sorting point for local production shipments to Nova Marina. After losing the Albeo river port, trade hasn’t decreased as such, but taxation due to Cirocca to use the port have throttled it, and the historic rivalry towards Cirocca has increased. The city takes its name from several white marble structures, imported exclusively to distinguish the city from its surroundings, making it ‘as white as the river’. Biancolido’s population includes an old puma tribe that count Guglielmo had welcomed and integrated into the city. Their behavior is well seen and appreciated by other citizens, though outsiders tend to be a little perplexed by and suspicious of their presence. CIROCCA Cirocca is a city swept by a strong, torrid wind, earning it the name of Warm City, and has long lived in the shadow of Biancolido along with the other small coastal cities. Since Oreste Lamellino, with Liveccia’s wealthy support, headed the failed plot against Guglielmo, Cirocca has become the seat of resentment against Biancolido, even after Corinna’s much more capable hands took the reins of power after her father’s death. The events that followed have made the counties’ borders quite mutable, leading to the Confederation’s request that all internal hostilities cease in order to face the common threat of the Holy Kingdom – who has taken over and blocked access to the Albeo river port. THE ALBEO RIVER The narrow river bed has historically been the border between the two counties, and its name is due to the chalky formations along its path. The two bridges that cross it, one wooden and one stone, connect Biancolido to Cirocca and further inland. The presence of seismic activity in the area means that the coast is mostly made up of sharp rocks and shallows, impossible to navigate with the exception of the river estuary: and that is where the region’s main port is located. Originally controlled by Biancolido, it has become a long-contended territory until the enforced truce, which permanently handed it to Cirocca.

OBTAINING CLUES What follows are the twelve people with information that the PCs can find; the important NPCs they can interrogate and discover the most critical locations to investigate. Depending on the number of players, if the first round is not particularly lucky, the GM should allow the PCs to find one or two clues in the second round, adding another for any successful roll: the chaotic situation is making the investigation harder, but maybe it will also loosen a few tongues. The GM will have to place the following NPCs in the most suitable city, describing them and assigning them a personality trait or instinct as the GM prefers and which the PCs may use as leverage to obtain the information they seek. • Giuditta or Franzisco • Lorenzio, the palace healer • Penelope, the musician • Eugenia, the school tutor • Marcello, fabric merchant • Adenio, spice merchant • Ruggiero, art merchant • Luca and Gioachino, guards • Silvano, Susanna and Sofia, three urchins LOCATIONS The investigation will bring the PCs to a variety of locations in the cities. The Biancolido palace is on the eastern border of the city, next to a wide wooded expanse, and is a severe building, simple in its shining white marble. The family servants occupy the ground floor while taking care of daily chores and tasks, while the family’s living spaces take over the upper floors. The Cirocca palace is smaller but more ambitious, with its colored stained glass windows. The staff occupies a nearby building, as the palace is exclusively used by Corinna for her diplomatic meeting with the neighboring aristocracy. Her artists, on the other hand, have a little more freedom of movement here. The Albeo river port, where the kidnapping allegedly took place, is an important location: there are Lamellino guards all over, and the atmosphere is particularly tense. The houses are low and all seems quiet: several ships have, perhaps presciently, left the area early. Near the port is a bustling market, resounding with trade and heated haggling over the latest products at a number of tables and stalls. A wide sorting area can be found close-by, where shipments are loaded upon and unloaded from carts and wagons connecting the more inland regions. CORINNA’S SPEECH Our less-than-beloved neighbors in Biancolido are up to something. My informants tell me that someone is intent on moving entirely unfounded accusations against Cirocca in order to have an excuse to clash swords – despite the truce forced upon us by the Confederation. Dearest Goffredo is still such a savage that he is willing to put his own heir in harm’s way just to sate his hunger for revenge. I will not see such an uncivil brute wage war upon us like this. Investigate his actions as Franzisco prepares our troops. Biancolido’s population has not taken well to the rumors of this kidnapping, we would do well to be prepared. Both factions are ready to offer a reward to each PC, and an extra reward if they are willing to solve the issue in the most opportune way for their chosen city. - ACT 1 - THE INVESTIGATION It will not be easy to discover what has happened, and it will be almost impossible to do so at first: Ivana’s machinations were detailed and her doings will only be discovered, if at all, long after the events will take a turn for the worse. MECHANICS Each PC will be able to make an ability or skill check (with DC around 17) based on their choice of what to do to investigate one of the possible areas. In case of a success, the GM will reveal one of the clues; the GM must also remember to give inspiration for good descriptions, strategies, or narrative hooks. After each PC has made their check and the first round is over, things will start to go badly, and the population will get into a state of unrest. There will be brawls in the streets and small groups will form with people intent on stoking violent actions, inciting others to grab whatever weapon is available to fight. Any check made at this stage will cause the loss of 8 HP and will be made with disadvantage due to the general confusion in the streets.

The Battle of the Scarlet Bight

• Behind the scenes (prerequisite ‘Second generation’): Apparently the distaste that Franzisco and Giuditta show is exactly that: a show. It seems that the two have met outside of prying eyes (or so they thought), and behaved in a much more friendly manner towards each other; even intimate, some might say. • The bridge over the Albeo river: in the past few weeks, an accident involving two shipping barges damaged the stone bridge. A few simple tweaks could set it up for a trap if someone were so inclined. • The trail in the woods: a path across the pine woods around the port secretly leads to the clearing separating Cirocca and Biancolido. • A stranger among enemies: it seems that the PC’s nemesis has started working their way up through their rival city’s servants, building their power and reputation. • Venceslao: an old building in ruins is home to what is left of a small group of Worms. The ruins themselves are only used by local youth during their games. Unbeknownst to all, they also house Venceslao, the cannon used by the Brethren and which was being transported towards the local headquarters, along with plenty of black powder. The weapon is a little rusty but perfectly functional, while the powder is inert and needs some work by an alchemist to have their explosive potential restored. • Sacred and Confederate: both cities have signed trading deals with emissaries from the Holy Kingdom. The latter’s representatives have attempted several times to expand their influence in the region, in order to gain a bridgehead on the other side of the Green Pit. • Missing children (only discoverable with the final investigation action): children have almost entirely disappeared from the rooms and grounds of the orphanage and school. In the chaos caused by the turmoil, no one seems to have noticed. If the PCs have investigated the school or orphanage previously, leaving a good impression with staff, they will be directly contacted by the orphanage’s custodian Bernardino, who will warn them of the disappearance without needing any ability or skill check. After the second round of investigations, the population will no longer be able to be kept at bay due to the rumors making the rounds in the city: Guglielmo the Young has been killed, and his head currently adorns a pike down at the Albeo port. The orphanage, and its custodian Bernardino, is a modest building in Biancolido hosting young ones looking for new families. Adoption is a common practice in the area, though some older members of the aristocracy are against it. The schools of both cities are well respected, as it teaches the young to read, write, and count, crucial skills for a commercial region. That said, many of their students are not necessarily the most frequent attendants. Each city has an inn sporting its local group of slightly tipsy older citizens and a circle of gossipers that meet each morning. CLUES • Guglielmo the Kind: young Guglielmo is well-loved by the population thanks to his kindness and the shelter he erected for the ill during a pestilence a few years back. The topic is very close to the heart of citizens of both cities. • The gossip: a new confidant has appeared, around a year ago, at the court of Corinna Lamellino: a red cat with a sharp tongue, who seems to know everything about everyone. She’s the one who was told about Goffredo’s sordid plan to wage war upon Cirocca, and she’s the one who allowed the information to reach the countess. • Whispers in the dark: Count Goffredo is keeping the situation under control thanks to an intricate web of informants headed by a spy. This elusive figure, effectively unknown to most members of the court, exclusively meets with the head of the Biancolido family. Many have tried uncovering information about them in vain: they seem to be able to disappear into the shadows without a trace. • We’re being followed: when the PCs start gathering information about the kidnapping, they might notice that a red-furred cat has been watching them for some time. In case someone wants to dig a little further, they might choose to follow and capture the cat. This will not be successful: Ivana is particularly skilled and will be able to escape. No matter the outcome, she will still accidentally drop a handkerchief sporting reddish soil on it, very similar to the one found at the orphanage. • Second generation: Giuditta and Franzisco, despite knowing each other well, cannot stand each other’s presence – the young puma has saved the Lamellino heir from certain death by drowning, humiliating him. Since then, the two have been quite clear, and public, about their distaste for each other.

The Battle of the Scarlet Bight PREPARE FOR BATTLE All the PCs can do is to finalize the details of the inevitable clash. Biancolido’s forces are stronger in number, but the buildings and equipment of Cirocca are notably better compared to its counterpart. The starting Momentum then is 8 (already including the nemesis’ strategies), which can be modified by the PCs’ actions, according to the field pitched rules (found in chapter 9 of the Historia rulebook), with DC 18 for any check. Additionally, this is a time-sensitive situation, meaning that each PC only has time to prepare a single action. The GM may remind the players that among the clues they’ve obtained (if they have obtained these specific clues) during the investigation in ACT I there is information about possible surprise attacks and ambushes: • The stone bridge over the Albeo river can be damaged in order to collapse during the enemy troops’ weight, forcing that unit to waste one action to free themselves of the debris and wade across the river • The path in the woods can be used to set up a Reinforcements maneuver • The Venceslao cannon can be used by a unit if someone has been able to reactivate the black powder. Its Assault actions will give 1 additional Momentum and will confer advantage to Defence checks As always, the GM should reward good ideas from the players with inspiration. - ACT 2 - ON THE VERGE OF VIOLENCE Immediately after finding out about the death of Guglielmo the Young, both cities will be in chaos: Goffredo from Biancolido will have been slighted by the murder of his darling child, while Cirocca will be up in arms about being accused of such a heinous crime by a bunch of pumas. If the PCs find themselves in the wrong city at the time of the uprisings, they will have to make their way back. The group has to make a Dexterity (Stealth) check (DC 16) to avoid bringing any unwanted attention upon them and suffering 2d6 points of damage from their escape. The party who employed the PCs will ask them to meet with their respective captain of the guards: Franzisco for Cirocca and Giuditta for Biancolido, and start preparing for battle after which the PCs will be ‘generously rewarded for their assistance’. Unfortunately, neither character can be found. The couple will have seen what was coming and how it would lead to war and the death of at least one of them, and tired of the feud between their families they will have chosen to elope towards a new life, far away from the resentment and hatred of the two cities. The news of their escape will only be confirmed once the fighting is underway. STOPPING THE VIOLENCE The main goal is to let the troops intervene as early as possible to avoid a high number of civilian casualties. The citizens, though armed with passion about what transpired, are nowhere near trained enough to face the opposing city’s armed guards. The population cannot be contained, and the only way to solve the situation before they severely hurt each other is to lead the charge, hoping for a quick resolution to the battle. The GM will have to be clear, at this point, about the following: any attempt to placate the population will have no result, like trying to stop the sea with a single rock.

- EPILOGUE - THE DEAD AND THE SURVIVORS With the end of the battle, rage and hatred will give way to silence and despair: the cost of the clash, especially among civilians, will be unbearably high. The damage must be calculated at this point. If the damage is five or higher, there will have been significant losses among the population; if the damage is ten or higher, it will have been a massacre, and one-tenth of the population will have died. In addition to this, both cities will receive news: it seems as though a large number of children were being kidnapped as the battle began. The PCs will receive news of a group of citizens led by a red-furred cat having attacked a cart leaving the city, discovering several children tied up and carrying letters sealed with the symbol of the Holy Kingdom. The letters appear to be from a cardinal, asking for a congregation to weaken the coastal cities, pushing them to war, so that the Kingdom may strike with more ease. The actions and events pertaining to the battle will be told in Carolino’s writings at a later stage: “The violence was such, and such was the fury, that the white rocks were bathed in red that ne’er would be washed away. Thus it was named the Battle of the Scarlet Bight by the people, on the day in which an alliance was formed. The ink was the very blood of the people, the parchment their own land.” IVANA LINGUATORTA’S PLAN Ivana’s plan has always been to nudge the violent instincts of Biancolido and Cirocca, by poisoning the minds of Goffredo and Corinna to let blood flow on their own streets, only to then present them with a common enemy in the Holy Kingdom by finding the cart of kidnapped children and sealed letters. Will the rivalry between the cities, washed away in blood, lead to a new power to challenge the Holy Kingdom and even the Confederation? The first step has been made, and only the PCs can discover, and perhaps influence, what may happen next. - ACT 3 - NO QUARTER The battle will follow its course once ACT III is reached. Their nemesis will have assumed command of the rival city and will have set up one of the surprise strategies not taken by the PCs (the bridge, the path, or the cannon). Corinna Lamellino will be well away from the site of the battle, and Goffredo, despite desperately craving face to face combat, is too old to be of any use. If the characters have chosen all three surprise strategies, the nemesis will have prepared substitutes for Giuditta and Franzisco, who will turn against their own forces and work together: the seeming betrayal of the captain will lower the battle’s Momentum by 2. The battlefield is divided into five zones, each with its own objective: • The Albeo river – The objective is the wooden bridge, as the stone one will undoubtedly be made to collapse by one of the factions. • Biancolido’s mountainside – The objective is the high ground offering clear visual and line of sight towards the river. • Biancolido’s seafront – The objective is a strip of land close to a river bight. • Cirocca’s mountainside – The objective is the high ground allowing for better defence of the road to the city. • Cirocca’s seafront – The objective is a fortified area initially prepared for the defence of the port. Additionally, during the battle any unit will have two ways to cross the river separating the two cities: wading through the river, conferring disadvantage to the action in their next turn, or using the bridge if it is under their faction’s control. In both cases, it will take a simple Repositioning action to do so. CIVILIAN CASUALTIES The civilian casualties among those interfering with the battle will be high. At the end of the tactical phase, mark one damage to civilians plus an extra one for every completed tactical phase until that point. The PCs can use their Defence actions to defend civilians and reduce this damage by one.
