Guide in Using PIVOT Learners Material Module

For the Parents/Guardian

This module is created while taking into consideration the learners
needing further assistance from us in terms of studying and learning what
they need to know when they are inside the classroom. Although the module
serves its purpose it still needs the guidance and concrete instructions from
the facilitators. As you give the instructions to the learner, give emphasis on
the importance of the lessons to be learned and to follow instructions well in
doing the activities and tasks required.

Also remind the learners to use separate sheets in answering the
pre-test, self-check exercises, and post-test.

For the Learner

This module is created to impart to you the lessons you have to learn in
modern arts. For this quarter the activities are made for clearer understanding
of the lessons in media-based arts and design. The module has to be followed
in sequence including its activities.

I What I need to know?

This module was designed and constructed for you. It was created to help
you understand and appreciate media-based arts. This module will help you an-
alyse art elements in the media based arts and design in the Philippines. The les-
sons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.

The module is divided into five lessons, namely:
Lesson 1 – Photography
Lesson 2 – Film
Lesson 3 – Animation
Lesson 4 – Print Media
Lesson 5 – Innovation in Product and Industrial Design

Activity 1: Photography

Painting and photography is almost of the same objective, it is to capture the
idea or scene. To understand photography better compare it with traditional
painting. The seven basic elements of photography – line, shape, form, texture,
pattern, color and space which all refer to the way you set up your photo.

LESSON 1: PHOTOGRAPHY

In the discussions of the previous quarter, you learned that computer
manipulation has widen its horizons in the field of art. It has introduced you to
technology-based arts which is limitless especially to today’s generation where
gadgets like computer, laptops, cell phones, tablets and other devices are
accessible. In this quarter, modern approaches in photography, film, print,
digital media, product and industrial design will be explored as part of
modern-based arts and design.

To start this module, you need to recall the elements of arts. These are
line, shape, form, texture, pattern, space and color. Line can vertical, horizontal,
curved or jagged. Shape can be two-dimensional representation of objects like
silhouette. Form is a three-dimensional representation of an object, usually
through the use of lighting and shadows. Texture is the use of lighting to bring
out details of an object, making it easy to see whether a surface is smooth or
soft. Pattern is the use of repetition to create an interesting picture. Color is the
use of warm or cool colors to set mood and space that is either negative or
positive space and it can be used to make a statement. Often seen when using
the rule of thirds.

Consider the time needed to complete all the activities in this mod-
ule lessons 1-5 for Quarter III for the submission of the outputs
and module activities.

Photography is a method of recording the image of an object through the
action of light. Focusing a camera at a subject and clicking the shutter is
photography as process. The word, derived from the Greek photos (“light”)
and graphein (“to draw”), was first used in the 1830’s. Photography is an art form
that came in the late 1800’s with “series photography” and the invention of
celluloid strip film. Photography as art is discerning a significant moment or a
unique expression, framing it in the camera viewfinder with an eye for
composition, and then clicking the shutter.

LESSON 2: FILM

Another art form risen on the last part of the 20th century pave way to the
introduction of the celluloid strip common called as cinema. Along with
photography cinema or film has been greatly influenced by technology.
Filmmaking is considered a technology driven art.

From the media-based arts and design discussed in Lesson 1, the
elements of photography was given. For this lesson you will learn the art of film
making and the collaborative art of filmmaking.

Film is an art form that came in the late 1800s with “series photography”
and the invention of celluloid strip film. Its early name is “motion pictures”. The
development of still photography came in the late 1800s with series photography
and the invention of the celluloid strip film. The moving images led to the rise of
Kinetoscope, a peepshow cabinet with an eyehole where the first movies were
developed.
Characteristics

Director conceptualizes the scenes and directs the acting, supervises the
cinematography and finally the editing and sound dubbing.

Acting the art of acting for film where actors had to learn to express
themselves without the exaggerated facial expressions and gestures used
on stage and learn to deliver their lines naturally and believably.

Cinematography is the art of film camera work or the work behind the
scenes.

Film Editing is the art of selecting the precise sections of film. Visual,
emotional and sound effects

Film Production/Set design are recreated in physical terms such as location,
scenery, sets, lighting, costume and props.

Different genres arise along with the success of filmmaking are action, fantasy,
thriller, science fiction, horror, musical, western, comedy, documentary, epic,
adventure, drama, and historical.

LESSON 3: ANIMATION

After the success of the movie industry a whole new career opportunity in
technology has emerged for creative Filipinos through the field of animation.
Filipinos have been involved in the creation of animated feature films such as
Shrek, Cars, Finding Nemo, Brave and others. Filipino animators also render
graphics in different platforms for the gaming industry like Nintendo, Sega ,
PlayStation and the likes.

In the previous lessons, the media-based art forms like
photography and films were discussed. Its contribution with the use of
technology as a form of art have been widely adapted and flourished. As it evolve
new techniques arise, giving new opportunities and chances for the art industry
to be recognized.

Animation is the art of making inanimate objects appear to move.
Animation is an artistic impulse that long predates the movies. The promotion
of the country’s animation is supported by the different organizations and asso-
ciation.

LESSON 4: PRINT MEDIA

Part of the media-based art and design is the large-scale traditional
publications such as newspapers, magazines, journals, books, posters, fliers and
the like. All of these materials display Filipino artistry.

Although digital media is now part of everyone’s life like in the previous
discussion in other lessons, we cannot get away with the conventional form of
media which is the print media. In this lesson, you will learn that the value of
printed materials is as much valuable that of the materials viewed on the web.

Print Media

Included here are large scale publications such as newspapers, magazines,
journals, books of all kinds, as well as smaller scale posters, brochures, flyers,
menus, and the like.

Advertising is one major field that still relies heavily on print media like
newspapers, magazines, posters, brochures, and flyers

Comic Book is also referred as komiks and is a field of print media that
highlights the artistic gifts of Filipinos. Its popularity began in 1920’s
through the Liwayway magazine.

Digital media are any media that are encoded in
machine-readable formats. It is a counterpart form techniques of
manipulation for comics. Nowadays, readers find access on electronic
books that so called “ebooks” like wattpad through the use of gadgets.

LESSON 5: INNOVATION IN PRODUCT
AND INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Art is a continuous process and development where ingenuity and
creativity is vital. Creating new ideas in every product is expected, it is a form of
art. The rawness of the product and the distinct artistry design becomes a
stardom both locally and internationally.

The previous lesson discussed are the many forms of media-based
art from photography, to film, animation, and print media. Now, another
breakthrough in art will be discussed which encompasses product and industrial
design as applied to furniture, lighting, interior accessories and even in fashion.

Innovation in Product and Industrial Design

Innovation plays a key role in the development of sustainable methods of
both production and living because in both cases it may be necessary to
create alternatives to conventional ways of doing things that were developed
before environmental consideration was central to most people’s framework for
making decisions.

Industrial design the design of mass-produced consumer products.
Industrial designers, often trained as architects or other visual
arts professionals, are usually part of a larger creative team. Their primary
responsibility is to help produce manufactured items that not only work well
but please the eye and, therefore, have a competitive advantage over similar
products.
The work of an industrial designer often relates to or includes graphic design,
such as advertising and packaging, corporate imagery and branding,
and interior design (also called interior architecture or environmental design),
the arrangement of man-made spaces.
