SLOUGH (H)It was a dismal Boxing Day for Maidenhead United as a lead was thrown away in a painful defeatto local rivals Slough Town in front of an excellent crowd of 2,846 in the first York Road leaguemeeting between these sides in exactly 25 years.A typically fractious derby match - which saw five Magpies cautioned by referee Mr Whartonand Slough's on loan Basil Tuma red carded on the stroke of half time - started so well for theMagpies. Within the first couple of minutes a Maidenhead corner to the near post saw a miscuedSlough clearance fall to the feet of Josh Umerah who bundled the ball home at close rangeunder the exposed Rebels 'keeper Adam Desbois for his eighth goal of the season. A definingnear miss came when Slough's Tarik Gidaree took a throw in in the Maidenhead half, succeededonly in finding Liam Dulson who danced down the left flank and burst into the area. Dulsonmight have taken the option to shoot but chose instead to play the ball across the penalty areato Umerah who would have had a tap-in were the pass not fractionally behind him.The visitors came into the game more as the half wore on but it took something special to levelthe game ten minutes before the break. Luke Holness received the ball outside the Maidenheadpenalty area, turned and hit an unstoppable shot past the under-occupied Jordi VanStappershoef. The match however took a further twist in first half injury time, as ChanseHeadman jumped into a headed clearance and was poleaxed by an aerial challenge ofdisproportionate force by Basil Tuma. Referee Wharton issued an immediate red card for the onloan Reading man.Ultimately, the red card changed the game in a way which galvanised Slough. They sat back andlooked to counter with Holness leading what were understandably infrequent raids into theMaidenhead half. United had vasts amounts of possession and saw goalbound efforts blocked bya disciplined defence well-marshalled by the Rebels player-manager Scott Davies. However agoal would not come despite a continued bombardment of corner kicks, narrowly off-targetefforts from the likes of Matt Robinson and Sam Barratt and loud penalty shouts for a tackle onJayden Mitchell-Lawson which looked to have occurred on the very edge of the box. .With Maidenhead unable to fashion a clear opening, there was always the danger that Sloughwould get a crucial goal on the break. They did just that inside the final twenty minutes when asoft-looking free-kick was given against Popoola, the ball delivered into the box was half-clearedonly for a wayward Slough pot shot at goal to take a kind deflection off a Maidenhead player intothe path of their captain Kiki Oshilaja who will not have been able to believe his luck as he swepthis side gleefully into the lead. Maidenhead thereafter were chasing the game and their playbecame more hurried and mistake ridden. Into four minutes of injury time United failed to cleartheir lines following a free-kick and substitutes Jaiden Drakes-Thomas and Jared Myers wereable to link up with the latter finding himself in front of an exposed Jordi Van Stappershoef toslot home a third Slough goal.Full Time - Maidenhead United 1-3 Slough Town
It was an all-action start at The AJN Stadium. United started well, but it was the everdangerous Brooke Stirrup who had the first sight of goal for the home side. Maidenheadhowever led inside three minutes. Captain Simone O’Brien won back possession deep in theKeynsham half and from the tightest of angles she drove home a right-footed strike whichlooped over Chloe Jones in the Keynsham goal and dipped just under the crossbar.Maidenhead thereafter dominated first half proceedings with top-scorer Izzy Stockton andMegan Harper sending efforts wide of goal. At the other end Chloe Webb had to clear fromher own goal line before a cross field ball bounced unkindly on the 4G surface over the headof Webb with Stirrup crashing a volleyed effort over the bar.United forced plenty of corners and from one such delivery Stockton turned and her shot hita Keynsham player and drifted behind. From the resultant corner Stockton stabbed a shotwide. The hosts came close when Stirrup pulled the ball back from the far post but GeorgiaGalley fired her effort over the top.A key 60 seconds before the break came when a Keynsham attacker had an empty goal toaim at but could only find the base of the post from a tight angle. The rebound fell kindly foranother Keynsham player whose shot was cleared from the line by an alert Myah Baksh.Following that dramatic near-miss, United immediately counter-attacked and a cross fromKatie Akerman was tapped home at the far post by O’Brien for her second of the game andof the season.Maidenhead had their third three-goal haul of a prolific season barely five minutes into thesecond period. A chipped ball over the top of the Keynsham defence by substitute EmilyMcMaster was hit on the half-volley by inform Izzy Stockton and United’s top scorer beatJones who was given no time to react. Lyndsey Preston came close for United as the halfwore on but the next and final goal of the game was scored by the alert Angharad Beman, who tapped home from close range after Hull had wisely opted to parry a free-kick launchedgoal bound but saw the loose ball come back off the underside of the crossbar. Maidenheadthereafter saw out the remainder of the game with comfort.MUWFCMUFC Women compete atTier 4 of the women’sfootball pyramid and aremanaged by formerPremier League star DaveKitson.United made it a veryencouraging start to the newyear with a clinicalperformance in a 3-1 victory atKeynsham Town to furthersolidify their position in thetop half of the table.
HORSHAM (A)United made it a satisfying start to the new calendar year as they came frombehind to record their first league double of the season, defeating Horsham FC ontheir own 4G surface. The match at the Fusion Aviation Stadium on a bitterly coldthird day of 2026 was similar to the return fixture at York Road back at the end ofthe summer, when a dominant second period by United made amends for anuncertain first half performance.United dominated the early exchanges, winning a number of corners and pinningHorsham back. However, the home side came back into the game and MannyOnariase had to be alert to pinch the ball away to end a threatening road fromformer Magpie Shamir Fenelon. With just under half hour played of a scrappy halfHorsham were awarded a penalty by referee Mr Swan. There was some careless playby Maidenhead in the build-up, but the contact by Onariase on the home playerlooked minimal. James Hammond stepped up to sweep the ball into the corner ofthe net. With the home side proving increasingly adept at smothering United’sattacks, it came as something a surprise when an injury time penalty was awardedat the other end for a foul on Josh Popoola. Liam Dulson stepped up but saw hisspot kick saved low in the corner by home goalkeeper Carey. After an unsatisfactory first 45 minutes an early attacking substitution in thesecond half changed the face of this game, as Josh Umerah replaced OwenCochrane. This allowed Liam Dulson to operate in a more familiar wider role withRemy Clerima reverting to a defensive position. United thereafter ramped uprelentless pressure, roared on by good numbers behind the goal travelling fromBerkshire. An equaliser followed ten minutes of one-way traffic. Popoola was onfamiliar tricky form and he gained half a yard down the left and sent over adelicious cross for Miles Welch-Hayes to bury into the roof of the net with his head.Popoola was making openings on seemingly a minute-by-minute basis, a deliveryto the far post saw captain Will De Havilland drive a volley off target before Mr Swandecided against a third penalty award of the game as the Magpies forwardslalomed into the box and looked to have been stopped by illegal means. Carey –later named sponsors player of the match for his heroics – pulled off a point-blanksaved from Umerah and the luckless United top scorer then turned in the area andpulled his instinctive shot just wide of the far post.It felt like one of those days where something special would be needed to win thegame and that moment came in the first of four minutes of stoppage time. MattRobinson received the ball on the edge of the box after Popoola’s cross was halfcleared, took a touch with his right foot and with his second touch instinctively firedhome a bullet of a strike into the top corner before Carey could even move, earningUnited a fifth win in seven league games and sparking wild scenes of celebration.Full Time - Horsham 1-2 Maidenhead United

With a new management team at the helm, United have sent a number of players on thefringe of the squad out on loan in order to gain much needed game time.Just prior to the Christmas break, an extension was made to Josh McMenemy’s loan withlocal Step 4 side Binfield. Josh will stay with the Moles until 24 January and – following afrustrating three-week break from action due to inclement weather – he was back inaction at the heart of defence for the Isthmian League outfit as they forced a 1-1 draw athome to Bedfont Sports the day after Boxing Day. Josh’s most recent outing came onWednesday night as Binfield took on local rivals Ascot UnitedthAscot themselves gave a debut to United teenager Quaye Vine in their drawn fixturewith Hartley Wintney on 27th December. Quaye – who scored twice on senior debut forUnited in the Berks & Bucks Cup tie at Aldermaston in October before signing his firstcontract with the club – replaced his brother Lucias as a substitute with fifteen minutesremaining at The Racecourse Ground and has since made one further susbtituteappearance for The Yellas - themselves disrupted by weather - last Saturday afternoon.A third Academy graduate out on loan is Jadyn Dundas, (pictured below courtesy ofDBeechPhotography) who has joined London-based Hendon FC. Jadyn made a happydebut for The Greens in a 4-1 win at Fareham and scored his first goal for Hendon in athrilling 4-4 draw with Raynes Park Vale, for whom former Magpies David Omilabu andIbra Sekajja also netted at Silver Jubilee Park last Saturday afternoon. The other Magpie ‘out and about’ is young Irish forward Noah Stewart. After making histhird start of the season in the County Cup defeat to Reading, Noah joined a Hayes &Yeading side under the new management of successful former Ascot boss JamieTompkins. Noah made an impressive debut in victory over Metropolitan Police and hassince made a further four starts, suffering just one defeat in his time at the SKYex so far,on penalty kicks to Burgess Hill in the Velocity Trophy. Last Saturday afternoon Noah waspart of a Hayes side which earned a come-from-behind 4-3 victory against Fareham.LOAN REPORT
Enfield Town - who proclaim themselves to be ‘the country’s first fan-owned club’have made remarkable progress since they were formed in 2001 as a response tosupporter dissatisfaction at the running of Enfield FC, once one of the giants of thenon-league game. Starting in the Essex Senior League, three promotions havetaken the north London club into the National League South and they are looking toscramble together enough points to secure a third season at this level.Last weekend they took what could be a very useful late point from their 1-1 draw atthe Queen Elizabeth II Stadium (pictured below) against Tonbridge Angels. TheKent side led early on when Leahy converted from a corner and it was in stoppagetime when the Towners levelled with a composed finish from Adam Thompson. It can be hard-going in this big-spending division when you are operating without abenefactor, but United got a taste of Town’s fighting spirit in the return match inAugust. There was an early chance for Liam Dulson on the day before JoshUmerah’s effort was blocked by former Magpie Rhys Forster. A last-ditch block byManny Onariase thwarted Lamar Reynolds and Sam Barratt came close twice - first, with a half-volley which forced Forster into a great save before an intended lobstruck the bar. A handball shout in Enfield’s box was dismissed by the referee beforethe break. With five minutes added on at the end, our best chance of the secondhalf saw Will de Havilland head Matt Robinson’s cross over the bar on a frustratingafternoon which at least saw both clubs record a first league point of the season. Our last York Road meeting with Enfield FC occurred 23 years ago tomorrow. A 3-3draw saw a Matt Glynn brace - one a penalty kick - and an Andy Morley strike forAlan Devonshire’s Magpies. Paul Armstrong levelled Glynn’s spot kick beforeMorley’s fine volley restored our lead. Jay Richardson scored a fine goal for Enfield totie things up before the break and Demba Traore gave the visitors the lead with tenminutes remaining. Glynn’s close-range equaliser before the end denied Enfieldtwo points in their forlorn Isthmian Premier League survival struggle. The clubs first met in 1935 when United travelled for an Amateur Cup tie to futuretwo-time winners Enfield and lost 4-1. In 1971, an FA Cup First Round tie atSouthbury Road saw Enfield beat Maidenhead 2-0, our last appearance at that stagefor 35 years. Our record versus Enfield FC was: Played 10, Won 3, Drawn 2, Lost 5.TODAY’S OPPOSITION

As a modest Athenian League team who’d battled through four epic qualifying rounds –defeating Isthmian League sides Wycombe Wanderers, Leytonstone and Walton & Hershamalongside Athenian league rivals Aveley - Magpies supporters, players and staff would havepreferred a home draw against EFL opposition when the FA Cup 1st Round draw instead sentthem to Enfield on 20th November 1971 to face a top Isthmian League side who had won thatdivision three seasons out of the last four.Equally, the draw was hardly a crowd-puller for Enfield, who had reached Round One for theninth time in 13 seasons. The Maidenhead Advertiser estimated that of the 1,500 crowd“about 500 of those were Maidenhead supporters”.The teams were as printed in the programme (above), except for Gibson and Turley replacingTilley and Adams for the hosts, with Tilley reverting to the bench. For Maidenhead, Goodestarted in place of cup-tied Tommy James. Scott and Fancett were mistyped in theprogramme line-ups as ‘Stott’ and ‘Yancett’ respectively.England amateur international Tony Turley opened the scoring in the 26 minute. Turley hadonly recently battled back to fitness from a cartilage operation but beat Spittle in theMaidenhead goal with “a 20-yards shot which curled in through a narrow gap by the nearpost.” Maidenhead hit back as the prolific Alan Tottman - who’d scored a brace againstWycombe - lobbed Williams in the home goal, but saw his effort land in the side-netting.United also cursed their luck when Mick Chatterton’s header struck a post with Williamsbeaten and the Maidenhead forward also saw a shot blocked on the line in the second half.thSpittle made three great saves from Hill, Turley and Gray before the former clinched the tiewith twenty minutes left with a side-foot volley after an assist by full-back Moffatt. So it wasEnfield who went through to the Second Round for the fifth time in thirteen season, wherethey weould be eliminated by the odd goal at Division 4 side Peterborough United.Manager Maurice Williams declared himself as “quite pleased” with the team’s performance, but added “the result shows that we still have some way to go before Maidenhead can classthemselves as one of the top amateur sides”. There would however be ‘some way to go’before the Magpies reached that stage again of the FA Cup again, 35 years to be precise.Enfield meanwhile went on to enjoy a boom period of great success in the 1980’s.FA CUP ‘71

In the last group game abrilliant defensive display earnt a 0-0 draw against favourites Arsenal.”“Having conceded only one goal, we were confident going into face a very strongThames side in the premier league semi final. It was a great game ending 0-0 andgoing to penalties which went to sudden death and we just missed out.”“Undeterred, in the Third & Fourth play-off versus Arsenal again we scored early andheld on for a joyous victory. Thames went on to beat Bracknell in the final but we weresuper proud to more than hold our own against some top teams.”“There was fantastic goalkeeping from Karen, supported by Cookie and guest playerShazza. Both Jo and Jan were excellent in defence, and on the wings, Sue, Cookie andShazza - two goals too! - worked so hard. With the recent Boxing Day defeat still painfully fresh in the memory a chance tolook back to 2017 when a Slough Town side reduced to ten men went home emptyhanded in a feisty Berks & Bucks Cup semi-final match at York Road. The two sideshad met in the same competition just over three years earlier when Maidenheadhad suffered a disappointing 3-1 home defeat (sounds familiar) to their nearneighbours; but United were now riding high at the top of the National LeagueSouth and an impressive crowd of 1,112 were in attendance in freezing conditions tosee the two old rivals do battle for a place in the final.Things did not get off to great start, ex-Magpie Chris Flood put the Rebels ahead on15 minutes before Ryan Peters, already on a booking, was fortunate not to see redfollowing a clumsy tackle on Slough’s Nathan Smart. Despite this set back thevisitors doubled their lead on the half-hour, Gavin James, another ex-Magpieheading home a cross from Lee Togwell. The complexion of the game changedshortly after when Slough’s Guy Hollis was sent off for a studs-up tackle on ReneSteer and within a minute Dave Tarpey got one back for the hosts taking advantageof a disorientated Slough defence.Maidenhead finally equalised in the 69 minute, a long throw from Sam Barratt(above, centre) found substitute Jordan Cox who hooked a fine shot past MarkScott. Six minutes later a diving header from Sean Marks putUnited 3-2 in front,Slough threw bodies forward looking for an equaliser but were finally undone ininjury time when Tarpey set up James Mulley to make it 4-2 and set up a final withHungerford Town.thThe Magpies celebrated a third consecutive victory today in 1981 when Aveley madethe trip to east Berkshire; Barry Mason’s goal in the 40 minute followed by a closerange effort from Benny Laryea midway through the second half secured a 2-0Isthmian League 1 Division win.thstON THIS DAYBy Maurice Cann
