World Press FreedomDay "Freedom of the press is a precious privilege that no country can forego." Mahatma GandhiEvery year on 3 rd of May everyone celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate it around the world, to defend media from attacks on their independence and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession. It was held in London for the first time. It was held by UNESCO under the theme of “Promoting an Independent and Pluralistic African Press.” This year’s theme for the Day was “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights”, signifying the enabling element of freedom of expression to enjoy and protect all other human rights. This anniversary edition of World Press Freedom Day had a full day of activities at the UN Headquarters on 2 nd May. Partners from the media, academia, and civil society were invited to organize events in New York and around the world centered on this year’s theme. Specially, on this day, the United Nations General Assembly places a special focus on educating people about the value of press freedom in society, the importance of information transmission, and the need for the government to uphold and defend the right to free expression. Without freedom, the press is nothing and without a press, society is nothing therefore we all must ensure that right to expression of truth is safeguarded.
