International Dance Day Dance is not just a form of art, but it is also highly beneficial for a person's overall health. It is an enjoyable and effective fitness exercise that does not require heavy lifting or painful stretches. Dance improves mental health and serves as a great relaxation technique. Every year on April 29, people observe International Dance Day to celebrate this beautiful art form. The day honours different dance forms practised by millions of people worldwide. International Dance Day, also known as World Dance Day aims at the promotion of art and culture. This day encourages people to participate in dance and learn more about it through numerous events and festivals organized worldwide. Every year a new theme is selected to commemorate this occasion and people plan their celebratory events accordingly. The theme for this year's dance day has not been announced yet. The theme of the year 2022 was "Dance for Life". History In 1982 the International Theatre Institute [ITT], in collaboration with UNESCO performing arts established International Dance Day to perform dance forms globally. This day is marked on April 29 every year and coincides with the birth anniversary of Jean Georges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet. The ITT chooses a distinguished dance personality, choreographer, or dancer to compose a message emphasizing the importance of the art form. This message is translated into multiple languages and shared worldwide. Significance The significance of International Dance Day lies in its ability to raise awareness about the importance of dance as an art form and to promote its accessibility and inclusivity. The day encourages people from all walks of life to participate in dance-related activities whether as performers or as audience. It aims to break down the barriers and create a sense of unity through the power of the art form. International Dance Day serves as an excellent opportunity to use dance as a medium for strengthening relationships and exchanging dialogues in our universe. It is not only a means of self-expression but also a diverse art form with the power to unite people. "These are shortcuts to happiness and DANCING is one of them.” -Sahisha (grade 9)
