Spofforth Parish Magazine September 2020

From the
Reverend Barbara

September is usually the time when we start getting back to our normal routines after the
summer break. With the current coronavirus pandemic, it might be quite different this
year as we all adjust to whatever the ‘new normal’ is for us. Life may be different for a
variety of reasons; moving house or school, working from home or going back to work
after long months of being furloughed. There may well have been separation due to
self-isolation which is now over, sadly not for all and still many are suffering and
worrying about the changes. There may have been illness or the death of a loved one, but
of course as we all know – change happens.

In the first programme of The Vicar of Dibley, after finding out that their new vicar is a
female! they talk about change. “Things have to change ……. like traffic lights - if they
didn’t change there’d be terrible congestion” says Frank Pickle, “But if gravity changed
we’d all go floating up into space,” muses Owen Newitt. “There’s good change and bad
change” declares Mrs Croppley, “Like the changing of the guard.” “And then there’s
pickled onion crisps!“ quickly replies Owen Newitt. Change is all part of the rich tapestry
of life, and as such is not a problem persay, it’s how we deal with change that matters.

It is a good time now then, to reflect on how God can use us to make changes; make a real
difference in our workplace or school, within our families or circle of friends as well as in
our community and parish.

Moses knew about change. When God gave him the job of bringing the Israelites out of
Egypt, He asked him a question,” What is in your hand?” “A staff” Moses replied. (Exodus
4:2). This characterized his livelihood and the things he knew how to do and what he was
good at. It represented his wealth - his flock. It also symbolised security and safety. But
God in his wisdom asked him to be willing to lay it down and trust in him whole
heartedly. God asks the same question of us: What is in your hand – or put another way,
what has God given you that you can use in the name of God? We all have a variety of
gifts, personalities, experiences, relationships and intellects and they can all be used in
the work God has given us to do. Make no mistake, God has given us all a ministry, a
mission; it is unique, created and blessed by God. How will we use our God-given gifts to
make a difference in the places where He calls us to serve Him?

2 Spofforth Parish Magazine September 2020

John Ortberg, in his book, ’When the game is over It All Goes Back in the Box’, tells a true
story about Johnny, a 19-year-old with Downs syndrome. He worked at a supermarket
checkout putting people’s groceries into bags. To encourage his customers, he decided to
put a ‘thought for the day’ into each bag. Every night his dad would help him to prepare
the slips of paper. If he couldn’t find one he liked he would make one up and he signed
them all on the back and put these positive little notes into customers bags in the hope
that it helped them have a good day. A month later, the store manager noticed one day
that Johnny’s line at the checkout was much longer than anyone else’s. They didn’t want
to go to another checkout; people wanted Johnny’s thought for the day. He wasn’t just
filling bags with groceries; he was filling lives with hope. Just like Johnny, God equips each
one of us with everything we need to make a difference, to elicit change for the better in
the lives of ourselves and others. The small things can make a huge difference.
I wonder, what changes can you make in your life and in the lives of others for the
better?? What has God given you to make His love known? What has God given you that
will help and encourage others in their faith? It is quite literally all in your hands, this is
your mission – if you choose to accept it?

With love and blessings
Revd. Barbara

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

It has been suggested by some readers that a “recipe of the month” section
could be of interest to our subscribers.

This month we have been provided with a lovely recipe for Nettle Soup by
Rebecca Hirst, which is taken from Gifford's Circus Cookbook. With
nettles in abundance, hopefully some of you will be inspired to try this.

Nettle Soup - Serves 6

Ingredients
Knob of butter
1 onion, diced
2 celery sticks, diced
3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
2 bay leaves
2 large potatoes, peeled and sliced
1 ½ ltr vegetable stock
1 handful of spinach
3 - 4 handfuls of young nettles, well washed
Vegetable oil, for deep-frying
Créme fraîche, to serve
Toasted seeds, to serve

1. Melt the butter in a large saucepan, then add the onion, celery, garlic
and bay leaves and sweat down for a couple of minutes.

2. Add the potatoes and stock and simmer for 30 mins until the potatoes
are cooked through.

3. Add the spinach and most of the nettles (saving a handful for deep
frying later), then return the soup to the boil and remove from the heat.
Allow to cool for a few minutes before transferring to a blender. Whiz the
soup until smooth, and season with salt and pepper to taste.

12 Spofforth Parish Magazine September 2020

4. Pour a couple of centimetres of the vegetable oil into a small heavy-
based saucepan. Heat the oil over a medium heat until a small cube of
bread dropped into it turns golden in about 15 sec (about 180C on a cooking
thermometer). Deep-fry the reserved nettle leaves until they are dark green
and just crisp, being careful to shield your eyes as hot oil can spit with
some ferocity.
5. Drain on kitchen paper, then drop into the soup with a drizzle of créme
fraîche and some toasted seeds.

please email Lisa at [email protected]

SHORT STORY

Lightening lay quite still in the darkness. There was no sound.
The only sound that crept up was the sound of rain patting on the crooked
roof. Suddenly, he was completely woken by a loud sound. Someone was
tapping on his wall.
Lightening lived in a concentration camp. It was horrible. The Guards were
big, burly men. You would never get out alive. He put his ear against the
wall then got out of bed to open the door, silently.
There he was, the only person he knew – The Man. He wasn’t allowed to
call him his name because it would prove he knows his identity. The Man’s
unspoken name was Johannes. Johannes told Lightening “Escape in 3
minutes when the guards change and the electric gate is turned off. Head
South. You will find a bag with a pocket knife, some water, a loaf of bread
and a compass.”
Lightening replied quickly “Ok” and climbed over the electric gate and
went South, just like Johannes told him to.
Lightning found a bundle filled with food, defenses and a compass along
with a map that he was not expecting. He picked up the bundle and
wrapped it in a cloth and began his journey.
He found a van and secretly clambered to the roof. The van driver kept
going South. He got off and jumped onto a ferry, which took him to France.
On the boat, surrounded by cheerful noises and bottles of wine clanking,
he ate some bread and then he went to sleep. He dreamt about finding his
family and seeing their happy faces. When he awoke from his 2-hour nap,
he had arrived. He left the boat. In Calais, he moved fast and swift and
eventually he was out of the busy docks.
Ahead of him, he saw a mountain. He felt like he had good feelings about
this. Then he saw a sign saying, Mountain of Luckiness. He started
climbing.
When he got to the top he was very hungry and opened his bundle,

18 Spofforth Parish Magazine September 2020

forgetting he had run out. He took his pocket knife out of his pocket and
walked on, hoping for food. Lightening found a small cottage with smoke
billowing out of a chimney. The windows there were tall and the house had
a fat red door. He knocked.
Tired and unable to focus, Lightning said sadly “My name is Lightning and
I am…” “Lightning!” the lady said in amazement. “MY SON!” she said again
and again and hugged him.
