LEO CLUB OF COLOMBO WATERS MEET THAI PONGAL FESTIVAL A CELEBRATION OF HARVEST AND GRATITUDE Thai Pongal, a lively and culturally significant festival celebrated by the Tamil community worldwide, is observed on the 1st day of "Thai," the Tamil month (usually falling on January 14th or 15th). This joyous occasion marks the harvest season and is a dedicated time for expressing gratitude to the Sun God for a bountiful harvest. Farmers predominantly partake in the festivities to convey their gratitude to the Sun God, for providing the energy needed for the growth of crops. Beyond being a religious celebration, Thai Pongal serves as a moment for families to unite, share joy, and express gratitude for the abundance bestowed by nature. A focal element of Thai Pongal involves the customary preparation of 'Pongal,' a distinctive dish crafted from freshly harvested rice, jaggery, and assorted ingredients. On this auspicious day, individuals rise early, adorning the Pongal preparation area with vibrant Rangolis, sugar cane plants, and fragrant flowers. As the day breaks, people commence the Pongal-making ritual, offering prayers to the sun while preparing and presenting the overflowing dish, symbolizing prosperity and abundance, in a traditional clay pot. In rural areas, Thai Pongal is also a time to honor and show gratitude to the cattle, which play a vital role in agriculture. Cattle are decorated with colorful garlands, and special offerings are made to them as a gesture of appreciation for their hard work in the fields. This practice reflects the deep connection between nature, agriculture, and human life. Thai Pongal transcends regional and religious boundaries, emphasizing unity in diversity. It is celebrated not only by Tamils but also by people from various backgrounds, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and harmony. The festival serves as a reminder of the importance of gratitude, sharing, and coming together to celebrate life's blessings. On the whole, Thai Pongal is a festival that beautifully encapsulates the essence of gratitude, community, and cultural richness. As families gather to express their thanks for a bountiful harvest, the festival becomes a symbol of unity, reminding us all to appreciate the interconnectedness of humanity with nature. Thai Pongal stands as a vibrant celebration, not just of agricultural abundance but also of the enduring cultural traditions that bind communities together. LEO LUMENS Illuminating Excellence! LEO CLUB OF COLOMBO WATERS MEET Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is an ancient infectious disease that has plagued humanity for centuries. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae and primarily affects the skin, peripheral nerves, mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, and the eyes. Throughout history, leprosy has been surrounded by stigma and fear, leading to social exclusion and discrimination against those afflicted. Despite significant progress in medical science, leprosy remains a global health concern, necessitating ongoing efforts for its prevention, early detection, and effective treatment. W E L L N E S S Z O N E CLINICAL SPECTRUM OF LEPROSY INTRODUCTION Leprosy has deep historical roots, with mentions dating back to ancient civilizations such as India, China, and Egypt. In biblical times, people afflicted with leprosy were ostracized and considered unclean. The societal stigma attached to the disease persisted through the Middle Ages, leading to the establishment of leprosaria, special institutions where individuals with leprosy were isolated from the general population. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: DISCOVERY AND SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING: The discovery of Mycobacterium leprae in 1873 by the Norwegian physician Gerhard Armauer Hansen marked a significant breakthrough in understanding the causative agent of leprosy. Subsequent advancements in microbiology and immunology have contributed to a better understanding of the disease's transmission and pathogenesis. CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS AND TRANSMISSION: Leprosy primarily affects the skin and nerves, leading to a range of clinical manifestations, from skin lesions and nodules to nerve damage and deformities. The bacterium spreads through respiratory droplets, and prolonged close contact with an untreated individual is the primary mode of transmission. The disease has a long incubation period, often ranging from several months to many years, making early detection and intervention challenging. LEO LUMENS Illuminating Excellence! PAGE 24

Although leprosy is no longer considered a public health emergency, it continues to affect vulnerable populations in various parts of the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 200,000 new cases were reported globally in 2020. Countries with high endemicity include India, Brazil, Indonesia, and several African nations. GLOBAL BURDEN: World Leprosy Day is observed annually on the last Sunday of January. This international day aims to raise awareness about leprosy, dispel myths and misconceptions, and promote the importance of early detection and treatment. Organizations, governments, and communities around the world use this occasion to educate the public, reduce stigma, and advocate for the rights and well-being of individuals affected by leprosy. WORLD LEPROSY DAY CHALLENGES AND FUTURE OUTLOOK: Despite significant progress in leprosy control programs, challenges persist. Late diagnosis, limited access to healthcare, and lingering social stigma contribute to the continued transmission of the disease. Efforts are needed to integrate leprosy services into existing healthcare systems, strengthen surveillance, and promote community-based rehabilitation for individuals affected by leprosy. CONCLUSION: Leprosy, with its historical significance and ongoing impact, serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between infectious diseases, societal attitudes, and medical progress. World Leprosy Day provides an opportunity for the global community to come together in the fight against leprosy, promoting inclusivity, understanding, and compassionate care for those affected by this age-old disease. As we move forward, continued research, education, and advocacy are essential to achieve the ultimate goal of a world free from leprosy and its associated social burdens.
