SINHALA & TAMIL NEW YEAR Theme of the Month The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, known as Aluth Avurudda and Puthandu respectively, marks a cherished occasion on the Sri Lankan calendar. This festive celebration, spanning April 13th and 14th, symbolizes the transition from the old year to the new, coinciding with the movement of the sun from Pisces to Aries, signifying the end of the harvest season. Rich in cultural significance, this annual event brings together the multi-ethnic communities of Sri Lanka in a spirit of unity, gratitude, and joy. The period between the conclusion of the Old Year and the commencement of the New Year, known as Nonagathaya or Punya Kalaya, holds special significance in Sinhalese tradition. This neutral time is devoted to religious observances, with people donning white attire and visiting temples to seek blessings from priests or monks. Preparations for the New Year begin well in advance, encompassing a range of activities such as cleaning and decorating households, purchasing new clothes, and crafting traditional sweetmeats. The acquisition of a new clay pot is deemed essential, symbolizing new beginnings. Families come together to prepare delectable treats like milk rice, kavum, kokis, and kalu dodol, fostering a sense of unity and sharing within communities. Visiting relatives and neighbors, bearing gifts of traditional delicacies, further strengthens the bonds of kinship and camaraderie. Throughout the festivities, communities engage in a variety of games and activities, fostering a sense of togetherness and harmony. The auspicious dawn of the New Year sees individuals embarking on their endeavors with renewed vigor and determination. Paying homage to elders is a deeply ingrained tradition, with younger members seeking their blessings for prosperity and success. Anointing oil ceremonies and special temple rituals are conducted to invoke blessings for good health and fortune. LEO LUMENS Illuminating Excellence! PAGE 06 LEO CLUB OF COLOMBO WATERS MEET

The Tamil community ushers in the New Year, or Puththandu, with reverence for age-old customs and rituals. Homes are meticulously cleaned, and auspicious preparations are made, including the creation of maruthu neer, a sacred concoction of herbs, flowers, and milk used for ceremonial purification. Symbolic rituals, such as the creation of decorative kolam designs and the assembly of the Mangala Kumbam, mark the auspicious dawn of the New Year. Offerings are made to the Sun God and Lord Ganesh, invoking blessings for prosperity and well-being. Families gather to partake in sweet rice and receive blessings from elders, while the head of the household performs traditional acts like ploughing, symbolizing agricultural prosperity. A visit to the temple and acts of charity are integral to Tamil New Year observances, reinforcing values of piety and compassion. The exchange of gifts and tokens of goodwill among family members further enhances the spirit of celebration and solidarity. Amidst the diverse customs and traditions observed by the Sinhalese and Tamil communities, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year serves as a unifying force, transcending cultural boundaries. The sharing of traditional delicacies, the exchange of blessings, and the joyous camaraderie experienced during festive games foster a sense of belonging and mutual respect among all Sri Lankans. As the nation comes together to celebrate this joyous occasion, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year exemplifies the richness of Sri Lanka's cultural heritage and the spirit of unity that defines its people. Glimpse on Projects CELEBRATING ELDERS The Story of Our Silver Moments Project On April 21, 2024, we, the Leos of Colombo Waters Meet, embarked on a heartwarming initiative at the Grace Prerea Home for Elders. With nearly 42 elders residing in the home, our goal was to bring joy and support to the elderly community. Two days prior to the event, we visited the home to understand the needs of the elders. We discovered that basic toiletries such as soap and toothpaste, along with groceries like onions and garlic, were in demand. In response, we organized a supply of these essential items and arrived at the home on the designated day. As we arrived at the home, we were greeted with warm smiles and open hearts. The elders were in the midst of their lunch, and we took the opportunity to join them, engaging in meaningful conversations and laughter. The atmosphere was filled with joy, and the celebration was amplified by the coincidence of an elder's birthday. It was a moment of pure happiness, a reminder of the importance of cherishing each passing year and the significance of human connection. In that shared moment of joy, we found a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment, knowing that we had brought light and warmth to the hearts of the elderly residents. The results revealed that several individuals were in need of reading glasses to aid their daily activities. Armed with the data from the eye check-up, we were determined to address this need promptly. Two days later, we returned to the home with a supply of reading glasses tailored to the specific prescriptions identified during the examinations. The joy and gratitude expressed by the recipients were truly humbling, reaffirming the impact of our efforts. LITTLE CHAMPS - PHASE 3 Bringing Joy to Underprivileged Children Glimpse on Projects On April 3, 2024, a heartwarming initiative, known as Little Champs Phase 3, unfolded in Hindupitiya, aimed at bringing joy and entertainment to underprivileged children. The essence of this endeavor was to provide an experience they had never encountered before, a day filled with laughter, excitement, and cherished memories. Selected from the Hindupitiya area, 8 children below the age of 10 and 3 children between 11 to 14 were chosen to partake in this extraordinary adventure. With utmost care and consideration, transportation was arranged for them, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the day, courtesy of a KDG Vehicle. For many of these children, the concept of going to a cinema was a distant dream. To make this dream a reality, they were taken to Scope Cinemas in Kollupitiya, where they were treated to the thrilling spectacle of a 3D movie, "King Kong Vs. Godzilla." Their laughter and awe resonated through the theater, marking a moment of pure joy. LEO LUMENS Illuminating Excellence! PAGE 16 LEO CLUB OF COLOMBO WATERS MEET

Following the cinematic experience, the children were whisked away to the renowned ice cream parlor, "Carnival," located in Kollupitiya. Here, amidst an array of delightful flavors, they indulged in scoops of ice cream, savoring each moment of this sweet treat. As the day drew to a close, each child was presented with a piggy bank, a symbolic gesture to instill the value of saving and planning for the future. This small token served as a reminder of the unforgettable day they had experienced, filled with kindness and generosity. A heartfelt thank you extends to Lion Pavithra Parameswaran, the sister of our President Leo Lasikumar Parameswaran, whose benevolence and support made this project possible. Each piece retrieved from the sands represented a victory in the fight against pollution and a step towards restoring the ecological balance of the area. LEO LUMENS Illuminating Excellence! Gathered in the evening on the beach area near the Ramakrishna Mission, Wellawate, we reflected on our achievements with pride and satisfaction. Throughout this final phase, we undertook the task of collecting 2kg of plastics and 1kg and 600g of tin wastages, meticulously cleaning the shoreline from the Wellawate Ramakrishna Mission to Dehiwala beach areas. It was a labor of love and dedication, symbolizing our commitment to restoring the natural beauty of our coastal regions. Our journey with EcoReclaim began in December, driven by a shared desire to make a tangible difference in our community. From the outset, we set out to tackle the issue of beach pollution head-on, embarking on a series of cleanup efforts spanning several months. With each phase, we covered ground from Bampalapitiya to Dehiwala, removing plastic, tin, and glass wastages along the way. Despite the challenges we faced, we remained steadfast in our mission. Through collaboration with our own club members, we made significant strides in our cleanup efforts, leaving behind a cleaner, healthier coastline for all to enjoy. As we gathered on that memorable evening, we knew that our work was far from over. While EcoReclaim Phase 6 may have come to a close, our commitment to environmental conservation remains unwavering. We recognize that the journey towards a sustainable future is ongoing and that our efforts must continue beyond this momentous occasion. LEO LUMENS Illuminating Excellence! LEO CLUB OF COLOMBO WATERS MEET BREAKING BARRIERS Raising Awareness on Diabetes On April 30th, 2024, the Leo Club of Colombo Waters Meet, representing Leo District 306B1, collaborated with the Leo Club of Pannipitiya Metro Titans from Leo District 306C2 to launch an impactful project titled "Breaking Barriers." The primary goal of this joint initiative was to raise awareness about diabetes among school children, fostering a proactive approach towards health and well-being. Diabetes, a chronic condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels, has emerged as a significant public health concern globally. Contributing factors such as sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy dietary habits, and genetic predisposition have led to a surge in diabetes cases, particularly among younger populations. Recognizing the urgent need to address this issue, the Leo Clubs embarked on a mission to educate and empower the youth to combat diabetes. The chosen venue for the Breaking Barriers project was Sri Siddhartha Vidyalaya, a small school located in Wattala. This decision was strategic, aiming to reach out to a diverse group of students and provide them with essential knowledge about diabetes prevention and management. To deliver impactful sessions, two final-year medical students from the Faculty of Medicine university of Kaleniya were invited to share their expertise with the students. Their participation not only facilitated fruitful discussions but also encouraged students to take ownership of their health and well-being. As the sessions drew to a close, the organizers extended heartfelt gratitude to the principal of Sri Siddhartha Vidyalaya for graciously hosting the event and supporting their cause. Additionally, the medical students who volunteered their time and expertise were commended for their invaluable contribution to the project. Tokens of appreciation were presented to both the principal and the medical students as a symbol of gratitude for their unwavering support and dedication. The Breaking Barriers project exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and collective action in addressing pressing health issues within communities. By empowering youth with knowledge and fostering a culture of health consciousness, the Leo Clubs are laying the foundation for a healthier and more resilient society. WORLD HEAMOPHILIA DAY Advancing Awareness and Empowering Lives Every year on April 17th, the global community unites to observe World Heamophilia Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and understanding about heamophilia and other bleeding disorders. This observance serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by individuals living with these conditions and emphasizes the importance of access to proper treatment and support systems. INTRODUCTION: UNDERSTANDING HEAMOPHILIA: CHALLENGES FACED: Heamophilia is a rare genetic bleeding disorder characterized by the inability of the blood to clot properly. This condition is caused by a deficiency or absence of clotting factors in the blood, which can lead to prolonged bleeding even from minor injuries. There are different types of heamophilia, the most common being Heamophilia A and Heamophilia B, which are caused by deficiencies in clotting factors VIII and IX, respectively. Living with heamophilia presents numerous challenges for individuals and their families. The constant risk of bleeding episodes, the need for regular medical care, and the financial burden of treatment can significantly impact the quality of life for those affected. Moreover, misconceptions and stigma surrounding the condition can further exacerbate the challenges faced by individuals with heamophilia. Wellness Zone EMPOWERING LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION: Education plays a crucial role in empowering individuals with heamophilia to effectively manage their condition. Providing comprehensive information about heamophilia, including its causes, symptoms, and treatment options, helps individuals make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Additionally, raising awareness among the general public helps dispel myths and misconceptions, fostering a more supportive and inclusive society for those living with heamophilia. ACCESS TO TREATMENT: Access to appropriate treatment is essential for individuals with heamophilia to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. This includes access to clotting factor replacement therapy, which can help control bleeding episodes and prevent complications. However, access to treatment remains a significant challenge in many parts of the world, particularly in low-income countries where resources are limited. Efforts to improve access to affordable and sustainable treatment options are crucial in ensuring that no one is left behind. SUPPORT SYSTEMS: In addition to medical treatment, individuals with haemophilia benefit greatly from strong support systems that encompass emotional, social, and financial support. Support groups, advocacy organizations, and healthcare professionals play a vital role in providing guidance, encouragement, and assistance to individuals and families affected by haemophilia. By fostering a sense of community and solidarity, these support systems help individuals navigate the challenges of living with haemophilia more effectively. LOOKING AHEAD: As we observe World Haemophilia Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to advancing awareness, promoting access to treatment, and supporting individuals living with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders. By working together, we can create a world where everyone affected by haemophilia has the opportunity to live a full and healthy life, free from discrimination and stigma. CONCLUSION: World Haemophilia Day serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of solidarity, compassion, and action in addressing the needs of individuals living with haemophilia. By raising awareness, advocating for access to treatment, and providing unwavering support, we can empower individuals with haemophilia to live their lives to the fullest, irrespective of the challenges they may face. Let us stand together in solidarity and commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive world for all.
