The primary goal of the Leo club program is to provide a platform for the youth for development.Leo Colombo of Colombo Waters Meet has shown the priority on conducting quality projects and their focus being on quality rather than quantity is truly appreciable. As a Leo who has witnessed the club from the initiation to now, I am proud to say that the Leos of Colombo Waters Meet are doing an excellent job. Leo Club of Colombo Waters Meet has been performing exceptionally throughout this year as well under the presidency of Leo Lasikumar Parameswaran. Celebrating 76 Years of Sovereignty M O N T H ’ S S P E C I A L A D D I T I O N The 4th of February marks a significant milestone in the history of Sri Lanka, as the nation proudly commemorates its Independence Day. On this auspicious day, Sri Lankans across the country join together to celebrate their freedom from British colonial rule, which was achieved on February 4, 1948. As the nation observes its 76th Independence Day, the spirit of unity, resilience, and progress shines brightly, symbolizing Sri Lanka's unwavering commitment to peace, prosperity, and sovereignty. The Independence Day celebrations in Sri Lanka are a reflection of the nation's rich heritage and deep-rooted patriotism. The day is marked by various ceremonies and festivities, with the main events taking place in the capital city of Colombo. Streets are adorned with national flags, and the air is filled with the sounds of traditional music and cultural performances, showcasing the diversity and vibrancy of Sri Lankan culture. One of the highlights of the day is the flag-hoisting ceremony, which is presided over by the President of Sri Lanka. A highlight of the ceremony was the TriService Guard of Honor presented to the President, followed by a customary 21- Gun Salute rendered by the Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment, honoring his leadership and commitment to the nation. The event culminated in a spectacular display of show jumps performed by courageous para troopers from the Tri-Services and Police, captivating the audience and concluding the festivities with flair and admiration. This year's Independence Day celebrations were particularly grand and dignified, with His Excellency Ranil Wickremesinghe, the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, serving as the Chief Guest. The day's proceedings commenced with a colorful pageantry of Military Police outriders and mounted Policemen, setting the tone for a day of pride and dignity. His Excellency the President was welcomed by Hon Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and other distinguished dignitaries, further enhancing the significance of the occasion. As Sri Lanka proudly marks its 76th Independence Day, the nation stands united in its commitment to peace, prosperity, and sovereignty. Twelve teams eagerly participated in the tournament, each bringing their A-game to the court. A highlight of the event was the gracious presence of Leo Thenukushan Sundaramoorthy PFLM, the District Secretary of Leo District 306B1, whose participation added to the fervor of the tournament. The Leo Club of Colombo Waters Meet proudly hosted the Leo Kickoff Futsal Tournament on February 25, 2024, at Club Fusion, Boralesgamuwa. The event, which ran from 10 am to 3 pm, saw a bustling congregation of sports enthusiasts coming together for a noble cause – raising funds. ECORECLAIM PHASE 3 TOWARDS A GREENER FUTURE G L I M P S E O N P R O J E C T S We are thrilled to share the latest update on our ongoing EcoReclaim project, a vital endeavor towards fostering a cleaner, plastic-free environment. The Leo Club of Colombo Waters Meet proudly announces the successful completion of Phase 3, which took place on the 18th of February 2024. During this phase, our dedicated team, along with the support of enthusiastic participants, embarked on a mission to tackle plastic pollution head-on. We are delighted to report that our collective efforts resulted in the collection of almost 5.15 kilograms of plastic waste, alongside approximately 3 kilograms of tin waste and 4.4 kilograms of glass waste. These numbers are a testament to the impact achievable when communities come together for a common cause. What makes this phase truly special is the heartening participation of a foreign couple who joined us in our action, demonstrating that environmental issues know no boundaries. Their presence, even if for a short while, added a global perspective to our initiative. Free Medical Camp Hemas Hospital COLLABORATIVE EFFORT In a joint effort between Leo Club of Colombo Waters Meet, St. Lawrence’s Youth League, and with the sponsorship of Hemas Hospitals, a significant medical camp took place on February 23rd at St. Lawrence Church. The primary goal of this initiative was to offer accessible and free healthcare services to the community, aiming to enhance overall well-being and foster collaboration among residents. Running from 8 am to 3 pm, the event saw a remarkable turnout, with close to 300 individuals benefitting from a range of health checks and consultations. Participants had the opportunity to avail themselves of various services, including height/weight and BMI measurements, general checkups, blood pressure monitoring, random blood sugar testing, eye examinations, and consultations with medical officers. These services were crucial in providing insights into participants' health status, identifying any underlying health issues, and offering guidance on preventive measures and necessary treatments. Moreover, the inclusion of eye check-ups highlighted the importance of vision health within the community and encouraged individuals to prioritize regular eye examinations. MEDICAL CAMP AT ST. UNDERSTANDING CANCER A Journey Towards Awareness and Prevention Cancer, a formidable adversary to human health, continues to pose significant challenges worldwide. February 4th marks World Cancer Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness, promoting prevention, and advocating for improved treatment options. This global initiative aims to empower individuals, communities, and governments to take action against cancer. Understanding the nature of cancer, its risk factors, and preventive measures is crucial in combating this complex disease. W E L L N E S S Z O N E WHAT IS CANCER? Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. These cells can invade nearby tissues and organs, disrupting their normal function. Cancer can arise in any part of the body and can manifest in various forms, including breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and leukemia, among others.
