Preface
This folklore story book is a part of the ‘informative literacy learn-
ing’ programme which is conducted by the library division of Se-
kolah Terpadu Pahoa. In the process of publishing this book, the
library has coordinated with Naning Pranoto and other language
teachers to guide the students to develop their skills in rewrit-
ing the stories and their critical analysis in comprehending its
contents. This programme also aims towards the recollection of
Indonesian folklores, particularly within the school environment.
The process starts with the first step: finding the sources of the
stories, reading, comparing, and rewriting the story the student
selected. The second step: Upon the completion of the stories,
the division then collaborates with some particular students who
have excellent skills in drawing thus can be the illustrator of the
book. All of which, these whole processes cannot be separated
from the guidance of the school teachers in implementing the
learning value into the national culture.
Other than this book, there are different folklore series rewrit-
ten by both students and teachers of Sekolah Terpadu Pahoa.

named Ratna Manggali. They lived in Girah Village, in Daha King-
dom, which was ruled by King Erlangga. Calon Arang possessed a
very powerful magic which was feared by all of the people there.
A lot of the villagers have been the victims of her dark magic.
King Erlangga was very angry to see those people was suffered
because of it.

Calon Arang has been worried about Ratna Manggali.
She kept asking herself, ”Why haven’t been there any
men to propose to Ratna Manggali?”
10

One day Ratna Manggali was in her house yard
when suddenly a drunk man walked towards her
and uttered bad words to her.

Calon Arang was very upset when she saw the incident.
She wanted to help her daughter to get rid of the man.
She lifted her hand, and the tips of her fingers
sparked with flames that burned the drunk man
right in front of Ratna Manggali.

Ratna Manggali was very shocked to see what
her mother had just done.

There were some villagers who witnessed the incident,
but none of them dared to do anything. They were all
remained quiet when the man’s body turned into ashes.
Ratna Manggali felt very guilty and darted away
from the crowd.

After then the Girah villagers knew Calon Arang as a
witch. They also kept gossiping about Ratna Manggali
who hadn’t got married yet.
All the young men in Girah village were afraid to
approach Ratna Manggali, and Calon Arang was more
concerned about Ratna Manggali.
She hated the youngs in the village more because of
the way they treated Ratna Manggali.
She then took a revenge by casting dark magic
spells over the village.

The disaster in Girah was soon spread over the Daha
Kingdom and King Erlangga was very upset to hear it.
He sent his soldiers at once to capture Calon Arang.

Unfortunately, not only the soldiers failed to capture
Calon Arang, but they were also defeated
by her followers.
King Erlangga felt like being slapped in the face
and was more upset. Then he called Mpu Baradah
to stop Calon Arang.
19

Mpu Baradah told King Erlangga that Calon Arang’s
strength is her spell book.

“Yes, we have to find a way to take it,” Mpu Baradah
once again confirmed his information. King Erlangga
then came up with an idea. Bahula, Mpu Baradah’s son,
could go meet and propose to Ratna Manggali.
Mpu Baradah agreed with King Erlangga’s plan.

Bahula soon set to Girah Village as
a common boy who tried his luck to
propose to Ratna Manggali.
Bahula successfully convinced Calon Arang
that he was very serious about his
proposal to Ratna Manggali. Calon Arang
was relieved and happy to find this young
man. And so, she arranged a big wedding
party for Ratna Manggali and Bahula.

Ratna Manggali adored her husband very much.
She often talked about how powerful her mother’s spell
book was. Bahula took this opportunity to ask her
where Calon Arang kept the book.
24

Ratna Manggali told him where the book was.
2255

One night when Calon Arang was asleep, Bahula sneaked
into her bedroom and took the book away with him.
2266

Bahula then set off for the Daha Kingdom right away to
hand it out to Mpu Baradah.
2277

The next morning, Calon Arang woke up and found that
the box of her spell book was open.
28
BUKU CALON ARANG - ENGLISH.indd 28 06-Apr-18 10:32:02 AM
She was very shocked and outrageous.
“Who dared to steal my book?”
She hurriedly walked out to seek Bahula
and Ratna Manggali.
29

Mpu Baradah met her in her way and scowled,
”You’d better stop casting your evil magic!”
Calon Arang saw that Mpu Baradah had
her spell book in his hand.

After the death of Calon Arang, the Girah villagers then
lived in peace and they felt safe. The Daha Kingdom was
then more prosperous under King Erlangga’s
sovereignty. Ratna Manggali lived happily with Bahula,
Mpu Baradah also lived with them in Lemah Tulis Village.
