LT, USN, NC

BIOGRAPHY

Sarah Chilson has been serving in the United States Navy Nurse Corps for
the last seven years. She has seven years of nursing experience, with the last 5 in
critical care. She has been a certified Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) for the
last 2 years.

As a member of the Nurse Corps, Sarah has assisted in the development as
well as personally taught various classes for programs such as Hospital Corpsmen
Basic Skills, Medical Assistant, Hospital Orientation, and Nurse Internship Program.
Sarah has also precepted many new graduate nurses, new corpsmen, as well as
new Intensive Care Nurses.

Sarah is currently in her final semester at Drexel University for her Master’s
of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Nursing Education and Faculty Role.

PERSONAL TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Sarah’s philosophy on education most closely aligns with the humanist approach,
focusing on the creativity and potential of my students (Billings and Halstead, 2012, p.
224). An educator shall be perceived as an authority, not the authority in the classroom,
facilitating learning while sharing the responsibility for education with her students
(Lipscomb and Ishmeal, 2009, p. 174). The relationship between the educator and the
student is one that must remain courteous and respectful at all times. Educators will
help students realize their full potential through praising the students, encouraging
student participation, as well as elaborating on students’ responses and questions.
Educators will utilize activities that enable students to research the topic, make
decisions, and draw their own conclusions. Students must always be actively engaged
in their own learning; beginning by recognizing their own needs, goals, and objectives
(Billings and Halstead, 2012, p. 224).
