Dear Parents,

Wow, what an incredible few days it has been. Words cannot begin to describe the feeling of
joy and delight I have experienced. Grace was born in the early hours of Saturday morning
and since then it has become apparent that Jess and my lives have become full.

Jess and I have been so overwhelmed by the love and support we have received from the
whole Murray community. We would like to thank each one of you for all you have done to
make us feel so special over these past few days. We would also like to thank you once again
for the generous gift which I am certain Grace will grow to appreciate in time.

It has again been a fantastic year in the life of the school, with so many wonderful events and
achievements. Whether you have experienced some of the brilliance of our boys first hand or
heard of them through Speech Day, twitter, the headmaster’s newsletters or just chatting to
your boys. St Alban’s has certainly been a hive of activity this year and I am delighted that our
Murray boys have had such an instrumental role to play in the goings on at the school.

One of the highlights this year would certainly be winning Cultural Week for the second year
running. The organisation of our boys and their competitiveness in each of the activities was
superb. Although we did not win, we have again been very competitive in most of the inter-
house sport and the Diligence Trophy. However, I have no doubt our boys will keep pushing to
attain both these trophies.

The success of this year would not have been possible without the effort of the matrics and in
particular Gabriel Dos Santos and Nale Mulaudzi who led with distinction as Head and Deputy
Head of House respectively, leading from the front and giving of themselves for the benefit of
others throughout. I wish each of the matrics everything of the best as they head into the next
chapter of their lives.

A big congratulations must go to Refiloe Mamabolo and Reece McLachlan who were elected
as Head and Deputy Head of House and College Prefects for 2019. I look forward to these
young men following on from the excellence of this year’s leaders as they grow and mature
into these positions. I must also congratulate the following two Murray boys who were also
elected as portfolio leaders and College prefects: Farai Mhlanga (Head of Activities) and
Thabo Chesane (Head of Community Affairs). I also look forward to working more closely with
each of the current Form 4s as they pick up their different leadership roles next year.

On the staffing front, we are sad to say good bye to Thembi Mtshali after 22 years’ service at
St Alban’s and a number of years in Murray where she was a wonderful Form One tutor. We
wish Thembi everything of the best as she takes up her new post at Kingsmead in January.

I am also sad to announce that Justin Brits will be leaving Murray to take up a position as
Assistant Housemaster in Knoll, Justin has had a short but powerful stay with us in Murray and
we wish him and his family well as they join the Knoll community. We will be appointing a new
assistant housemaster in the first few weeks of next term.

It takes a school with vision to prepare a young man for life

I would like to make mention of all the other tutors who have played a significant role in the
lives of your boys. We are looking to adjust the tutoring system next year and I look forward to
even greater interactions between our tutors, the boys and yourselves going forward.
Overall, it has been a wonderful year and I hope each of you are able to have a well-deserved
break and enjoy some quality time with your sons. I look forward to many more interactions
with each of you in the coming year as your sons continue to progress through their St Alban’s
careers.
I will be in touch in the new year with dates and info regarding Easter Term 2019. Have a
blessed Christmas and I look forward to seeing our Murray men back at school on Wednesday
16th January.
Take care and God bless.
Warm regards

Mark
