BUDGETING

Activity 2

During you Job shadowing experience, ask your mentor what could be the expected monthly
salary for a newly qualified person for this job. R____________________

Once you have this prepare as accurate a budget for yourself as if you are newly qualified and
are about 24 years old.

These are the following parameters:

 You no longer stay at home and will therefore need to pay rent in the area you want to
live in. Look on property websites to establish just how much you will be expected to
pay per month in that area.

 You will need to pay for transport, either petrol or public transport.
 See the SARS website whether you will need to pay tax on your predicted starting salary,

deduct that from your salary
 Look on an insurance website to establish what kind of insurance you will pay as a 24

year old, male.
 See medical aide websites to establish how much you will need to pay as a 24 year old

male
 Work out what you will need to eat per month
 Work out how much you will need for entertainment
 All financial advisors suggest a minimum saving of 10% of your salary for a retirement

fund. Calculate that in as an expense
 It’s NEVER advisable to pay for monthly expenses on credit, so let assume you have no

access to credit for this budget.

discuss your experience of the actual job shadow experience as well as the budgeting activity

Job shadowing – Suitability Report

Now that you have completed your 3 days of job shadowing, you are to relay your experiences to your
peers.

In order for your peers to vicariously learn from your job shadowing experience you need to cover the
following aspects in your presentation:

1. Compare and contrast your expectations before job shadowing with the reality of the
experience (use a double-bubble-map to assist you in your thinking process)

2. Explain the major activities you were shadowing on a typical day
3. Identify and explain the aspects of the job that you perceive to be positive
