COMMUNICATION People love to talk so let’s have fun talking…
We begin with a talk from our current Head of School, Luke Rosenberg.
A powerful message from a young Albanian.
We look THE ESSENCE OF BEING AN ALBANIAN...
out for The essence of being an Albanian is made up of numerous factors. One of the most
one obvious of these factors is that as a whole, we are a very hardworking group of young men.
another Because we are a smaller school than most of those of a similar calibre to us, we work
and even harder to ensure we produce the best results and we strive for greatness. Albanians
ensure are young men who understand the value of this hard work, integrity, brotherhood
everyone and respect. Albanians are generally well rounded individuals, due to diligence in the
is not only classroom, participation in summer and winter sports, our cultural commitments and our

but I take immense pride in having been given the privilege to be the voice of the College
thriving. boys for 2016. I think it is something every College boy dreams of at some stage. It is
a massive honour that has been bestowed upon me. I feel that it is my duty to try and
ensure everything I do is for the benefit of the boys within the College. I have an incredibly
powerful and talented group of matrics to help me lead the school to new heights this
year. We will focus on getting the simple things done better than they have ever been
done before. Within the College there is already a formula to success – we will try to
improve and build on that formula. We will try and ensure every single boy is happy and
working to the best of his potential throughout the year.
There is a very strong sense of brotherhood within the College. We look out for one
another and ensure everyone is not only surviving, but thriving. In my eyes, the best
thing about the College is not the big brick walls of the buildings, but rather the people
inside them. Albanians are what make the College the special place it is. The strongest
of friendships are made here that will last for life. I say this because we do not see each
other simply as friends, but as brothers. Regardless of the type of person you are, how
good you are at sports, what your family’s financial status is or what colour your skin is,
you will find friends at the College who accept you for whom you are. There is a sense of
camaraderie and brotherhood because we are all united under one badge. It is a mutual
sense of pride amongst us which unifies us.
Now over to you to talk to us about an adventure, occasion, a story.

COMMUNITY TERM 1 2016 News
CONSISTENCY
COMMUNICATION This first term, as usual, began at a furious pace with the New Boys’
Lunch and Camp.
FOUNDERS’ DAY
Founders’ Day is an incredibly important day for the College, as it reminds us of the origins
of our school. But this year’s Founders’ Day was unique in seeing it commemorate Saint
Alban by placing an icon in the Chapel. The icon was commissioned by Theo and Karin
Botoulas and was created by one of the premier artists in the Greek Orthodox world, in
Thessonolia. It can be seen as the official monument to recognise Saint Alban. Father
Gradwell deemed it as ‘an incredibly historical moment in the College.’ It was an event
that, as an Albanian, was truly special to witness. It emphasises our school’s journey of
53 years from birth and how we have accepted Saint Alban as our martyr; without this
our school would lose a substantial amount of tradition – for this is ultimately what makes
a school.
Although our school is young it has already established a great deal of history and this will
continue making Founders’ Day even more special.
Matthew Thomas Form 5 – Allan Gray Bursary Student.
From Left: Tom Hamilton, Father Tim Lowes along with Father Gradwell, Karin and Theo Boutlas

In March we hosted the Experience St Alban’s College and Open Day. The young Grade
7 boys from schools far and wide were eager, enthusiastic and looking ahead to 2017
when there is no doubt there will be a whole new batch of young Albanians walking
through the Dick Ochse gates. Subsequently, boys were invited back for the Scholarship
Programme and the recipients will be notified in May.

There is no doubt that on return they are more independent and they realise they are

Ultimately there is testament to the fact that it is a risk worth taking. Kean Broom,

This achievement is significant in the sense that we may be seeing the rise of an Old
Albanian being a Constitutional Court Judge/Justice in years to come. A Constitutional
Court Judge/Justice is one of the highest-ranking officials in the South African Judiciary.
As was displayed this week our Constitutional Court plays an integral part in protecting
and upholding our Constitution. The court also reignited our standing as a Constitutional
Democracy… and it is very exciting that an Old Albanian played his part in history.”
