Chairman’schat

2018 wrap up

Garth Ridgeway – Class of ‘86

At the beginning of 2018 we had the aim of creating a few traditions in the
form of regular annual events and dates for the OAC community. In this way
we want to ensure that the OAC community gets used to events happening
at similar times, each year.

Reunions are now formally arranged over a weekend in June. The weekend
starts on the Friday evening with a ‘Home-coming’ for the 40’s and 50’s and
a dinner for the applicable years (in 2019 all the ‘9’s will attend 1969, 1979,
1989, 1999, 2009). While every Old Boy is welcome, the ‘9’s will receive a
formal invite. Official Old Boys’ Day is held on the Saturday and coincides
with a Winter Home Fixture. SEE DATES TO DIARISE FOR 2019 WINTER
OLD BOYS’ DAY

OAC and St Alban’s Golf Day is now held every 2
year in September. We are busy arranging our
4th event and the date and event is starting to
become well known in the community. (See
Entry Form under Dates to Diarise).

2018 was also a phenomenal year for St
Alban’s, with loads achieved, some change
to routine and exciting projects finished,
with others started. The College is looking
wonderful, helped not only by the rains, but
also by dedicated parents and Ground Staff.

As a Club, we raised money to assist Old Boys
to send their sons to this wonderful school and
we aim to continue with this in the future. Our
contribution at this stage, is small, but we aim
to increase this as the Club grows.

The OAC would also like to better recognise our
Old Boys and the wider community, and in this
vein, I sent an appeal to the entire community
asking for nominations for the Honorary Old
Albanian Award, The Old Albanian Mitre
Award and the Old Albanian Glave Award.
Once nominations have been received, and
the Committee and College, have approved,
these names will be added to the board which
is erected in the @thegreyandtheblue building
(The OAC new home which used to be South
Cottage).

I look forward to a fantastic 2019 and hope to
engage with many Old Boys at official OAC
events, or simply at the College when you pop
in to visit.

Regards
Garth

Sue Daffon – Editor

Time marches on a pace and with the new College branding (hope you like it!)
being required and overseas visitors and sick granddaughters, I am running
over time with this edition. I do apologise, but I am sure you will enjoy a bumper
issue, packed full of photos and news of the Albanian family far and wide.
During the Christmas holiday, I met up with Michael Davis ’11, who was the co-
conceiver and birth partner of this newsletter. Mike is now in London working
on Government issues.
In January, whilst down in Knysna, who should greet me but Gerhard Claassen,
a young Maths Intern some years ago and now Head of the Montessori School
in Knysna.

More recently I was visited by Chloe
Farrer, Mike Farrer’s eldest daughter,
who is turning 21 this month. Chloe
was delighted to walk around her old
home turf and to be then chauffeured by
Calvin Le Mottee (an old tutee of mine in
MacRobert!) to Pecanwood to check out
her Alma Mater.

I do hope to meet up with many of you at
Old Boys’ Day, maybe the Consecration of
the Chapel, or if you’re local, maybe we’ll
just bump into each other! Meanwhile,
keep warm this winter, take care on the
roads and look after yourselves and your
families.

Share with us...

I felt it was appropriate in this edition to share the story of a faithful servant – David Butcher. Tom Hamilton paid this tribute to him.

1976 and 1990.
Jean and David Butcher
Later, when his three sons later moved to St Alban’s College,
David migrated with them too and was co-opted onto the
College Council. He took up the position of Honorary Treasurer
on the St Alban’s College in 1980 a position he would continue
to hold (with several nomenclature changes) through to formal
approval of the Annual Financial Statements by the Council in
March 2013. This is a truly extraordinary period of commitment
and service, all the more so when one considers that David
served as Chairman of Council from 1996-2005, and also served
as Chair of the Boards at Bishop Bavin School and St Peter’s
College in that same period.

David served with and advised five of the six Headmasters who
have led St Alban’s College. He had every reason to admonish,
chastise and tease each of those Headmasters about their
spend-thrift ways, but equally he encouraged them to lift
their horizons and plan for the future. He did the same to the
Headmasters of The Ridge School, Bishop Bavin and St Peter’s
College.

David’s service as a governor at St Alban’s College, and in all the
schools and community organizations that he was involved with,
was marked by his razor-sharp financial acumen and strategic
nous. He gave his boards, heads and organizational leaders his
unqualified support and in that way they had the confidence
and courage to invest in the future of their institutions and the
country at large. His legacy is everywhere to be seen at St
Alban’s College, as it is in every other school and organization
that he served. I dare say that he never once submitted an
expense claim.

As Headmaster, I had the honour to serve St Alban’s College
with David for over a decade. He wasn’t just “The Chairman”, he
was equally a confidante, confessor, friend and mentor. He never
interfered and firmly believed in delegation of authority. I know
that he played the same role with many others in the institutions
in which David served. Back in July, David drove me to Soweto
to help him develop ideas on a church complex in White City,
Soweto, which had potential to be a beacon in its community.
He was as enthusiastic, humorous and engaged as ever, and his
devotion to education undimmed in the later season of his life.

and the Consecration of
the new Chapel will be on
20 June 2019. Everyone
concerned, from current
students, to Old Boys,
to staff, to parents and
to all contributors, is
excited that once again,
our beloved Chapel can
be at the heart and soul
of our College family. And
… Father Tim Bavin will
be an integral part of the
Consecration Ceremony!
You are more than
welcome to attend too.
