Dear Parents and Friends of the St Alban’s Music Department
Term 2, traditionally, is the busiest term for all involved in the Music Department, and 2018 will be
no exception! We have not been back at school for more than a week and already there is a buzz
in this beautiful building of ours. Preparations for concerts, performances and examinations are in
full swing and excitement is building for what promises to be a spectacular term!
A few pointers, to keep us all sane –
1. The DJ/Music Production Course kicked off last week and will be running, almost every Friday
from 15h00 – 17h00, until the 20th of July.
2. We are very excited to announce that we have started a project with the St Augustine Leap
School. This project involves our Choir, Gumboot dancers and Drum circle and we will meet with
their music students once a month starting 11 May 2018, from 15h00 – 17h00. Ultimately, we hope
to learn from each other, about friendship, music and the joys of sharing.
3. Several of our boys will be participating in the Pretoria Eisteddfod this month. The Choir,
Barbershop and Band are also participating and we wish all involved the very best with their
performances!
4. We are very proud of our new string trio and look forward to their first performance, hopefully
later this term!
5. Please make a note of our Mothers’ Day concert on 11 May 2018 and please join us for this special
occasion. The concert starts at 07h15, just after drop-off and you are very welcome to join us in
workwear, casualwear, gymwear or pajamas! Treats will be served after the concert!
6. Our Barbershop Boys were invited to perform at a corporate event in Johannesburg on the 18th
of May. The invitation was extended after a guest saw one of their performances! Well done, boys,
your hard work is paying off.
7. The annual Friends in Concert with WHPS and St Mary’s DSG will take place on the 23rd of May,
at DSG. Those of you who had the pleasure of attending one of these concerts will agree that this
is a highlight in our calendar. Please make a note of the date!
8. We are privileged that our Barbershop Boys and St Alban’s College Choir are once again invited
to share a stage with the UP Youth Choir on the 26 of May 2018. Tickets are available through
www.quicket and at the door.
9. The Choir and Barbershop will pay a social visit to Pretoria High School for Girls. To pacify the
parents, we have arranged for them to perform a song or two and now we call it a collaboration…
10. Many of our students, who take music lessons and are involved in the Choir, Band and
Barbershop, are not Subject Music Students. We would like to give them an opportunity to perform
in a concert and will present the Non-Subject Music Recitals on 15 June 2018.
11. The Subject Music Recitals will follow the week after, on the 21st of June. This will be the last
Recital for our seven Form 5 Subject Music students; we wish them best of luck for their preparation
for this and the Prelims starting on 3 July.
12. In between, many of the boys will be doing external examinations – we are very proud of them
and wish them steady hands and clear voices, deep breaths and excellent results!
13. Our Barbershop Boys will participate in the upcoming World Choir Games and they are putting
in many hours of rehearsals in preparation for this prestigious event.
14. A well-deserved half term starts on 22 June 2018.
15. When we return on the 2nd of July, we will be refreshed and ready to take on the latter part of
Term 2. More of this in our next letter to you!

The boys are very privileged to have your support and love. We get to work with well-mannered,
respectful, talented, hard-working young men and you must be very proud of them. Of course,
boys will be boys and we also enjoy their spirit and enthusiasm and their ‘forever pushing the
boundaries’ attitude!
That is what makes them so special!
Kind regards
