BYZANTINES? WHO?

It all began in 330 when the Roman Emperor moved

the capital from beloved Rome to Byzantium, and

hence began the Byzantine Empire. Due to its loca-

tion at the entrance of the Black Sea, Byzantine had

both sea and land trade routes in their grasp, from Roman Emperor Constantine

Hear Ye Hear Ye
Pick the wrong clothes to get out of the bed,
The king demands “Off with your head!

Ladies, you’re going to have to dress
according to the position of your
fathers and husbands from now on.
Also, make sure to not wear veils above
twelve pence in value if you’re the wife
or daughter of a servant. Remember,
showing class is the new trend, and
you know we have to be on trend, that
might as well be another law.
Furs are now exclusive to the women
of knights and they have a rental above
200 marks per year. That’s right, flaunt
the fur ladies, be proud of your title.
However, don’t be too proud. Make
sure not to wear gold clothes or sable
fur, or velvet, or satin, or ermine. You
got linen and cotton, what more could
a lady require?

Now if you’re the lady of a labourer, oh boy, you have even
less options, but don’t worry, Squire is here to inform you
of what is and is not ok. Make sure to not wear any clothes
that look or are expensive. If it looks nice, it’s not for you.
Absolutely no garments decorated with silver, that’s a
death sentence for your social standing.
Now, ladies of all classes, remember, Gold and purple silk
is only for the royal family and if it’s imported by a for-
eigner or by a Lombard, it is strictly forbidden. Keep the
royal family a family, no outsiders allowed, just how God
intended.
Do make sure that your man never wears shoes with
spikes or points that are longer than 2 inches. It would be
a shame if that were the reason for his decapitation.

ARTIST APPRECIATION

Vie et Miracles de Saint Amand, painted by Saint Boudemond is present this week in Artist
Appreciation. It portrays Saint-Amand after 1150, sitting with Saint Baudremon inscribing a
scroll seated in golden chairs, signifying their importance in the eyes of God. Though not having
the Divine Right of Royalty, the golden glow around the heads of the saints signifies their love of
God and God’s love for them, how they glow in his eyes. A truly magnificent Christian piece.

The piece also illustrates the dress of our time, with missionary bishop Saint Amand wearing a
dalmatic and chasuble over his alb. Saint Baudremon wears a modest and simple tunic, empha-
sizing his humility as a man of God.
