Challenges Abound...

Foreward...

A t Meril Academy, we are striving to turn challenges
into opportunities. Academy is an important platform
for the exchange of medical ideas and knowledge
which will ultimately translate to better patient care.

The aim of this Academy is to meet the needs for continuing medical education from
national and international communities and disseminating information for scientic
excellence.

With the 5th edition of Academy Times - Challenges Abound, we have come a long
way organizing CME events, hands-on workshops and experiential eld force
trainings. Creating true healthcare leaders with creativity and innovation, we are
constantly working to make that happen.

Globally, there has been a surge in the enhancement of various aspects of
healthcare, including its quality, reach and cost efciency; this is aimed at achieving
the well-being of and fullling the healthcare requirements of the general population.
Despite the substantial rise in medical costs, India has a highly privatized healthcare
system, with a huge chunk of these costs being borne by the patients themselves.
Healthcare system in India is marred by several issues, including accessibility of
health services in remote areas as well as by the urban impoverished along with a
dearth of experienced medical men.

In view of this we have come up with essential laparoscopic skill courses for aspiring
surgeons serving at rural area to enhance and upgrade their surgical skills.

This has been possible due to the concerted efforts of everyone at Academy and
proper directions from the management.

The joy of contributing.....

This is my third visit to Meril Academy in last
three months and I feel very much honoured to be
associated with this place. All thanks to Mr. Yoginder
Sahni.

Meril Academy is a very special, unique place that is
enriched with a dedicated staff as well as many multi-
sensory materials and technology. It is a very
therapeutic environment, which is highly structured,
supportive, and accommodating. The infrastructure
is bright, cheerful and well organized. It presents a
very nurturing and caring environment. What
impressed me the most is the rapport that is
established with the surgeons while they are here.

The “Updates in Hernia Surgery” program was highly
engaging. This is a plus and it was very apparent that
this same kind of rapport continues in each and every
program. It is a place that promotes a positive
learning experience. The professionalism and
dedication displayed by all employees is of very high
order.

I also had the privilege to meet some of the
promoters of the company. In all spheres, including
philanthropy, their thinking is way ahead of their time.
There can be no better example of someone walking
their talk so convincingly which can be seen in their
innovative products they are manufacturing. Their
vision truly reects the joy of contributing to society and mankind at large.

Also, I was delighted to see the production facilities and I must say it’s one of the best plants in Medical Device
Industry in India. I was impressed with detailed technical knowledge of the team. The Company is poised to rise to
greater heights in the years to come.

In a nutshell, Professionalism, Innovation and an Open mind to accept new challenges go to describe Meril.

Regional Manager - North 1,Meril Healthcare

“I still remember, the rst VSP (Visiting Surgeon programme) we did at the R&D oor
and total 26 surgeons came including Faculty. We know how tough it was to bring
surgeons to our center.

However, our perseverance and passion attracted more and more surgeons and
they actually saw our commitment towards academic excellence and our
endeavour to show how an Indian company can make a difference to the fraternity.

What Master’s Course and Academy did to us,

1. Perception - KOLs and Non-KOLs never expected any Indian company to invest so much and had a
vision of international level. They were surprised by our product line and became our brand ambassador. It
helped us in building Meril-Maxx as a brand.

2. Product and R&D – 90% of the visitors had never seen manufacturing process of Knee and Hip.
Witnessing our international standards generated a lot of condence in our products. People who saw MNC
manufacturing center (Boston, Mahwah etc) said...ours is better than them. A sense of pride.

3. Commitment - Adding international Delegates and Faculty further cemented our commitment towards
Orthopaedic Industry. Domestic surgeons saw our strength on International arena.

Masters’ Course had helped us immensely in converting surgeon to business and earning their
condence and respect. It had given us platform where there is only one scope - To excel and to excel.

I sincerely thank Management and Mr. Vivek Shah for putting up so much trust on us and Mr. Manish
Deshmukh for tirelessly working to make all these programmes a big success.”

IBD “Stories with Soaring Success”
at IBD Conuence Platform

The Playing Eleven
DETERMINATION. RESPECT. PATIENCE. PROCESS

Since its start in 2012, Meril’s Brazilian subsidiary has given respectable
growth, developing swiftly in all areas. While maintaining the competitive
edge with the likes of top American companies in Brazil who have been
dominant in the market, the Company had to continually adapt and grow.
Meril Brazil has been able to demonstrate the corporate culture, shared
values, cultural respect, learning attitude and proactive approach which
proved to be the key factors for the company’s success.

Practicing Mantra – Openness in Communication

Meril Brazil promotes and supports the cohesion of its staff
with numerous initiatives and activities. Every Monday
morning, our sales and administration team gather to
discuss the business potential and expected plan for every
single client (distributor/hospital). This has given good
results, as we were able to break down our monthly targets
which further gave us more control, analyzing our
achievements. The team was able to cater the current
distribution channel and also, was able to identify further
gaps to be lled. The company today has a client base of
160 hospitals and enjoys a market share of 7%. The team
practices extremely open and exible communication
channel ensuring that every single product order or client query is solved on top priority.

Delivering on newer Fronts

Continuing on the building blocks of the Brazilian operations, the approval of Biomime and Nexgen. Meril was
extremely diligent and consistent in its efforts to get the new products registered with ANVISA and commercializing
the same in Brazilian market. The products approved over the past couple of years were Mozec portfolio, ENT range,
Endo-Surgery. Meril managed to successfully organize the ANVISA GMP inspection for all of its verticals, which was a
mandatory process for its products’ approval.

In its third year of Brazilian operations, Company has grown at an average of 50% CAGR. This growth only shows the
consistent efforts and excellent groundwork across regions. The task was not easy as the country had negative
growth of –4%. The country faced a big scam in the healthcare industry causing huge cuts in the governments’
healthcare projects for public spending body called as SUS, which represents 70% of the Brazilian Healthcare market.
The setback was big and the challenge and difculties were now even bigger. But, unmoved by these changes, we
being fully focused and condent started to take company’s set objectives one after the other.

22 July, 2017 | Issue 05 | ACADEMY TIMES

The SUS success

Meril managed to enter in the SUS market winning 5 tenders and initiating work in more than 40 SUS accounts in 2016-
17. This was a huge success, given the changes in the SUS market and the strategic changes implemented by US
and European Multinationals. It was Meril’s rapport and clean relationship with clients and end users, which helped in
tackling the erce competition.
The readiness and easy approachability as professionals has reaped us good results. Meril has been exclusive
supplier of cardiovascular products for 2 consecutive years in 3 Hospital accounts.

The Backbone

Big leap in sales doesn’t come without the efforts of the back ofce and admin staff. These professional bond and
common goal was clearly demonstrated by the admin team who invoiced a monthly volume upto 350 invoices.
Supply chain for product orders are met within 48 hours in almost all cases that too without any software base.
Starting its operations from a modest house that had a working space of 80m2, the company has now moved to its
brand new ofce in the afuent Moema district of Sao Paulo with facility spanning over 400m2. Further understanding
the expected growth in years to come, Meril Brazil has migrated its operations with SAP compatible software to add
more precision and pace to its work process.

Continuous Learning and Development.

The process of Learning and Development doesn’t stop, be it internal or external. Meril Brazil has adopted this
principal policy and today is committed to deliver on this front. For the MERIL LIVE - CIT Program, an average of 40
plus clients visit its central facility in Vapi, India for training and development programs. In Brazil, the company
supports the national and regional bodies representing the physician society for learning and development activities.
In 2016-17, the company participated in 6 international events, 5 national events and organized more than 30 dinner
and coffee-break meetings. This has given lot of credibility for the company, as being a dedicated and committed
player in the Medical Devices Segment.
