MEASUREMENTS
Introduction on Standard & Non-standard units of length
WHAT IS MEASUREMENTS?
Measurement refers to the comparison of an unknown quantity with a known quantity.
The result of the measurement is a numeric value with certain units. We can measure the
length, weight, and capacity (volume) of any given object. https://youtu.be/pdW1X8nxuKc
WHAT IS LENGTH?
Non-standard units of length
Non-standard units and standard units are the two types of units used to measure length.
Nonstandard units of measurement are units of measurement that aren't typically used, such as a pencil,
an arm, a toothpick, or a shoe.
What is a handspan?
A handspan is the distance measured by a human hand, from the tip of the thumb to
the tip of the little finger. In ancient times, a span was considered to be half a cubit.
What is footspan
Foot span is measured in terms of length of foot.Let us look at what is meant by foot span.
The distance between the tip of the toe and the foot’s heel is called the foot span.
WHAT IS CUBIT
The cubit is an ancient unit of length based on the distance from the elbow to the middle finger.
Pace
Two natural steps are equal to a pace. So, starting with our right foot as the first step, we can count
one pace when our left foot strikes the ground. How to use pacing to estimate distances? Pacing
can be used to estimate distances.
CONTINUE
1. We can count the steps to walk the distance between two points in a straight line. Pacing is especially
effective for scouting surveys, contouring with the grid method, and fast double-checking chaining
measurements.
2. To be precise, we need to know how long our average step is when we usually walk. It is referred to as our
regular pace. We always time ourselves from the toes of the back foot to the toes of the front foot.
Arm Span
The physical measurement of the length from one end of an individual’s arms (measured at the fingertips) to
the other when elevated parallel to the ground at shoulder.
Difference between Uniform Non-standard and Non-uniform
non-standard units of length
Standard units of measurement are units of measurement that are typically used within each measurement system, such
as inches, feet, ounces, pounds, kilograms, or cups. Nonstandard units of measurement are units of measurement that
aren't typically used, such as a pencil, an arm, a toothpick, or a shoe.
Standard Units for Measuring Length
The standard unit of length based on the metric system is a meter (m). According to the length that needs to be measured, we
can convert a meter into various units like millimeters (mm), centimeter (cm), and kilometer (km).
Centimeters and millimeters help measure smaller lengths and meters and kilometers help measure larger lengths like distance.
Length is the term used for identifying the size of an object or distance from one point to Length is a measure of how
long an object is or the distance between two points. It is used for identifying the size of an object or distance from one
point to another. The length of an object is its extended dimension, that is, its longest side. For example, the length of the
ruler in the picture is 15 cm.

Ask the following questions to ensure understanding.
1. What is length?
2. What is a handspan, show me yours?
3. What is footspan?
4. What are some things we can find the length of?
5. Do you think that if I were to measure the length of the book using my handspan our measurements
would be the same, why?
