On Thursday the 24th of September, students from Years 6 to 11 attended two engaging
debates in the Learning Centre which brought a memorable ending to the term at
Woodthorpe School. The four debating teams consisted of four students (three of whom
spoke) from Years 10 and 11 in each team, including students from both Woodthorpe
School and their South Australian friends from the Meridian Campus.
The topic of the first debate was whether there should be one time zone across Australia,
during which both teams proved to be highly competitive. However, the Negative Team
won, with minute lead, persuading the judges to leave Australia in three separate time
zones. The topic of the second debate featured a current affair in our nation: that Malcolm
Turnbull would make a more successful Prime Minister than Tony Abbott was, and the
Negative Team again won, this time with a decisive victory.
The debates proved highly engaging for the audience of students, parents and teachers, and
the debaters put on an entertaining and competitive show, staying on topic most of the
time. The short time was enjoyed by many and integrated the skills of both West and South
Australia together in an exciting way. We all look forward to similar events in the future!
