Academic Awards Ceremony

Speech by Larissa Flintoff

Public speaking isn’t my thing, but today isn’t the day for holding back.

In each of our lives there comes a moment when we must move on. For the class of
2015, our time is up. Today isn’t about closing the books, but instead we’re turning
the page to a new chapter.

To the class of 2015, I say a huge congratulations, we’ve made it. The journey
that in year 7 looked like it would never end, has now concluded. Our journey to
the finish, as a class was not always easy or smooth, at times we lost sight of our
goals, but somehow its worked and now here we are graduating.

Seeking out the things we have learned is not just a matter of looking at our
grades. So today we can celebrate our success where a year ago I was not sure I
would have made it

Today each student from the graduating class would have that good feeling that we
have done our best and each of us has achieved and qualified. Graduating isn’t done
by each student alone, there are many who have helped in making this day possible
and I would now like to thank them. To our families, who gave us support along our
journey, thank you, and for the constant encouragement, to our mentors, without
your assistance and back-up, many would not have succeeded, so thank you.

At this moment, I have the opportunity to thank our teachers for the help and
support they have provided us with since we started in 2009. You are all truly
amazing, and you continued to teach, no matter how you were treated. It seemed
hard to believe as year 7 students that the teachers were here for anything more
than to making life difficult. But through experience we have learnt otherwise. I can
think of numerous year 12 teachers who have selflessly given up free periods, recess,
lunch and even school holidays to assist us in our learning, and I deeply and sincerely
thank them. I believe that whatever successes we will accomplish in the future, our
teachers from Woodthorpe have played a significant role in helping us get there.

Many students I guess are looking towards the day they graduate, I want to
encourage every student here today to make the most of your time at school. Work
your hardest, achieve your best and most of all have fun. I can say from experience
that school isn’t always about getting homework done and finishing essays. To the
class of 2016 I wish you the best of luck with all that’s ahead of you, year 12 has the
best of it all. You will experience every emotion listed in The Oxford, be challenged,

run off your feet and exhausted. But ultimately, you will remember year 12 for all the
good times, and for a lifetime.
I would like to share a short quote titled a place called success.

The road to success is not straight.
There is a curve called Failure,
a loop called Confusion,
speed bumps called Friends,
red lights called Enemies,
caution lights called Family.
You will have flats called Jobs.
But, if you have a spare called Determination,
an engine called Perseverance,
insurance called Faith,
a driver called Jesus - you will make it to a place called Success.

In other words the road to success is paved with sacrifices and determination.
Along the road, you will face many stumbling blocks, twists, and turns. You may
never know how far the road will take you. Or is it just around the corner?
Your journey will be determined by faith, hard work, belief, courage, and above all
persistence, your willingness to take chances and to fail, only to get up and try again
and again.
Along the way, you will face fear, doubts, unfairness, and setbacks.
There is no telling what you will experience along the road on your way to your
success.

Let me remind you, though, if you are going to experience success, you will have to
remember that success does not start with you – it simply ends with you.

Thank you and good luck to the class of 2016.

Battle of the Bands

14th December 2015

by Mrs Sarah Johnson – Music Coordinator

The school year of 2015 ended in an amazing spectacle of talent in the first
ever Woodthorpe Battle of the Bands. Five fabulous bands including, The
Rebels, Unorthodox, Lost Embers, Indecision and Black Ice rocked the Mount
Pleasant Venue to showcase their skills to a huge crowd of excited parents,
students, teachers and community members.

Judging was no easy task. Each band was well rehearsed and performed a
sensational two song set. Mr Kay, Mrs Mills and I had been given the task of
judging and we had our work cut out for us awarding scores for each band.
Judges scored each band out of 50 points using criteria that included
Musicality, Intonation and Balance, and Entertainment Value. The band with
the highest score out of 150 would be the winner. Each band also received
feedback sheets from the judges.

All bands were enjoyed by the audience but one stood out as the Winner. Lost
Embers lifted the room with their performance and they received the winning
prize and gave us an encore performance of their beautiful rendition of Wings
by Delta Goodrem.

The Battle of the Bands Competition was an opportunity for students to hone
their musical skills and give purpose and focus to rehearsals. As each band took
their turn on the stage I was very impressed at the standard of all the bands.
Students involved are to be commended on their instrumental, vocal skills and
encouragement of the other bands. Although there could only be one winner,
every band was necessary to create the performance and make it a success. I
encourage all musicians to look back on the excitement of the Battle of the
Bands competition and the joy your music brought to a packed audience who
were clapping, cheering and having a great time listening to and watching your
performances. This is what performing is all about so keep doing it and striving
to improve your skills as you are all are full of incredible potential and I look
forward to hearing what you come up with next.

Southern Campus Assembly

by Mr Suresh Veerappan

I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone. All the Students, Staff, Campus
Administrators and Directors have worked very hard to make this another successful
year. 2015 will be remembered as the year, where Albany and Gnowangerup
increased their travel and collaboration significantly to become the Southern
campus. This successful year was marked with a local assembly last Thursday.

It was an opportunity for the Directors and teachers to recognise our students
fantastic effort throughout the year. It was also the last time to say goodbye to our
graduating year 12 students, Julian Dartnall, Brodie Jackson, Alma Jackson, Lloyd
Slack and Xanthe Sprigg, as well as recognise the valuable contributions they have
made along the journey. I personally have known these students for the past 8 years,
and I watched them develop into fantastic young adults, full of potential. On behalf
of our teachers and everyone in our campus, we wish you the best for the future.

As we reflect on the passing year, it is clear that we need to thank numerous people
for their contribution throughout the year for the smooth running of the Southern
Campus. I would to like to thank, in particular Mr John Richardson and Mr Lynton
Buggins for your tireless work, as we embarked on the new Campus structure.

We are also very fortunate to have such dedicated teachers and education assistants,
whose professionalism is second to none. Under their guidance, all of our students
have made remarkable improvements this year. Sadly 2 of our staff will be leaving
next year, who will be missed. Below is a short extract of what was said in the
assembly last Thursday.

Mrs Debbie Christensen

Mrs Christensen has been with Woodthorpe School in the Gnowangerup Campus for
near on 1/8th of her life – what a huge contribution! During that time she has seen
many changes, including the building of new classrooms, erection of a fantastic
basketball court, purchase of the luxurious coach that Gnowangerup students use to
travel in and a huge evolution in technology, including the Video conference system.
When she first started, the school was using very old computers which were not
networked, and each one had its own idiosyncrasies. What a change to the fantastic
one-to-one touch-screen laptops that students now use!

Mrs C, as students call her, has taught in almost every subject area, as well as in her
specialist area of English. She has even taught in Primary for many years! A very
versatile teacher, she has performed many roles at the Gnowangerup campus.

To staff, Debbie has been a support and assistant. She has been an administrator,
trouble-shooter and tech support. For VC teachers in particular, having someone on
the ground to help out is invaluable. Not to forget her dry sense of humour, which
has brightened many of our days!

To students, Mrs C has been teacher, confidant, guide, nurse, secretary, tech
support….the list goes on. She has provided continuity through many staff changes,
and has taken on the role of Head of Campus when necessary.

Everyone at Southern Campus will miss Mrs C, and wish her well in her next venture.
Thank you for your service to Woodthorpe School.

Dannielle Keatley

Many of us would know Dannielle better as Miss Uren, which she has been for most
of her time here at Woodthorpe before her recent marriage. Dannielle has
contributed a huge amount of time and effort to Woodthorpe School in
administration at the Gnowangerup campus for the last 3 1/2 years. During that
time her efficiency and cheery assistance have been much appreciated by staff,
students and Directors alike.

Whatever Dannielle’s job description is, she has surpassed it by performing many
and varied duties, including VC coordinator, tech support, OH&S representative,
personal shopper, nurse, exam supervisor, and many more in addition to her regular
administration duties. Dannielle has learned many new skills in this position,
including operating VC equipment and programming Real Care Babies! Particular
mention must be made of her efficiency when dealing with requests from
Videoconference teachers at far sites, as she has been very efficient and helpful even
when asked to do something right at the last minute.

Staff and students at Southern Campus will miss Dannielle’s efficiency, and hope that
we can find someone just as accommodating to replace her. We wish her all the best
with this new phase of her life, and hope that she will drop in to see us all from time
to time!

Thank you, Dannielle.

Lastly, I would like to thank the numerous parents and community members, who
have contributed willingly of their time and resources throughout the year. I would
also like to thank Mr Maher, Mr Morren and the COM for their guidance throughout
the year, as we moved through the new phase of the school.

Jump Rope for Heart

Ripper Skippers Jump Off

By Mr Garry Bochenek and Montanna Trewarn

The Willetton Primary students enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of skipping in
their annual Jump Rope for Heart charity fundraiser. Students competed in a
range of strenuous activities such as ‘keep the kettle boiling, miss a beat, build
ups ,the grueling marathon and the gut busting double unders.’
Canning were the narrow victors, pipping Avon for first place, with Swan not
far behind. In the end it was the sportsmanship points which made the
difference.
The teachers also could not contain their enthusiasm and put on flawless
display of skipping skills. The House captains were brilliant leaders and set the
example of encouragement and support for their classmates. The Teachers
were super impressed with the brilliant skipping skills and wonderful
sportsmanship displayed by the students.
The afternoon concluded with the awarding of prizes to Ripper Skippers –
students who have a passion for skipping throughout the term. Year three-
Peony Sprigg and Branden Vos, Year 4- Tash Morren, Year5- Polly-Anna
Kaciuba, Year 6- Phoebe Smith.
The whole school community is to be congratulated for their immense
generosity, the students at last count had raised $12 757 and rising! The
money will be of great assistance to help combat Heart Disease which has
devastating impact on our society.
