Who is God to me?

God is an all-powerful (Genesis 28:3), affectionate father (Romans 8:15-17) who loves us so
much that he provides us with everything we need (1 Timothy 6:17). God’s provision is
evident in Jesus Christ, who is with us always. (Matthew 28:20.)

Jesus called God “Abba” (Mark 14:36) which is an expression of warm affection and
intimacy, similar to our expression “daddy.” The Greek equivalent of Abba is “father” (pater).
Journal on:
1. How God provides for you (Jehovah-Jirah)
2. How God has been and/or continues to be your intimate caregiver (Abba)
3. How God’s power and sufficiency comforts you (El Shaddai)
4. How you are comforted by knowing that God is currently with you (Immanuel)
5. How God has healed you from spiritual, physical and emotional sickness (Jehovah-Rapha)

Jesus is God

Jesus is In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was
God: the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. (John 1:1-5)

One with God: “I and the Father are one." (John 10:30)

Eternal: When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid.
I am the First and the Last.” (Revelation 1:17)

Omnipresent: And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body,

(Present everywhere) the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. (Ephesians 1:22, 23)

Omniscient: The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third

(All-knowing) time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." (John 21:17)

Life giving: In him was life, and that life was the light of men. (John 1:4)

Because Jesus is God, the names of Jesus are also names of God, such as Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, The Light of the World,
The Way, the Truth, and the Life, The Vine, The Gate, the Son of David, Lion of Judah, The Son of Man, and The Resurrection and the Life.

Often in the scriptures Jesus is called, or compared to, God’s names found in the Old Testament. Jesus would allude to his divine nature
by comparing Himself to several names used for God. Here are a few examples of Jesus being compared to God:

El Olam: The Beginning and the End: “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he
has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:12, 13)

Jehovah-Jireh: The Lord will Provide: Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he
who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)

YHWH-Rohi: The Lord is my Shepherd: "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me–just as the Father knows me
and I know the Father–and I lay down my life for the sheep.” (John 10:14, 15)

YHWH-Tsidkenu: The Lord is Righteousness: God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become
the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

YHWH-Rapha: The Lord Who Heals: Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom,
and healing every disease and sickness among the people. (Matthew 4:23)

“Aeneas," Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take care of your mat.” Immediately Aeneas got up.” (Acts 9:34)

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds
you have been healed. (1 Peter 2:24)

El Shaddai: The All Sufficient One: But he (the Lord Jesus) said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is
why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak,
then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9, 10)

Immanuel: God With Us: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" – which means,
“God with us.” (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23)

YHWH-Shalom: The Lord is Peace: The Lord replied, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world
gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

Choose one name of Jesus and discuss it in a group or write about it for five minutes. What does it mean to you personally? Write a prayer of
worship and honor to God using one of his names.

TEaching Tips

1. Did you Know that…?

• The first name mentioned in the Bible is the fourth word, GOD! (Genesis 1:1)
• The name of God in Genesis 1:1 is Elohim.
• Elohim is found over 2,300 times in the Bible referring to God.
• In Psalm 68, Elohim is used 26 times.
• The three most basic names of God are El, Elohim, and Yahweh (Jehovah).
• In Deuteronomy 5:9, all three names are used. “I the LORD (Yahweh ) thy God (Elohim) am a

jealous God (El )…”
• God wants a relationship with us. See Genesis 17:1-8 and Psalm 91.

2. Jehovah-Sabaoth

Throughout Scripture, God’s people would call on Jehovah-Sabaoth in times of despair. Some
examples occur in 1 Samuel. Read the following passages and see how the Lord of Hosts (Armies)
helped Hannah and David in their time of great distress and need.

- 1 Samuel 1:1-20
- 1 Samuel 17:41-47
At times, things seem so overwhelming that we find ourselves in complete despair. Despair can be
caused by financial, emotional, spiritual, or physical hardships. The Bible promises us that if we
approach God with a righteous heart (Proverbs 18:10), He will deliver us from out of the midst of our
troubles, just like He delivered Hannah and David. On a sheet of paper or in your personal journal,
spend several minutes reflecting and journaling on those times when Jehovah-sabaoth delivered
you from trouble, and call on Him for help in your current need.

3. Verses about the Lord of Hosts

Genesis 2:1 Daniel 4:35
I Kings 22:19 Psalm 68:17
Psalm 148:1-2 Nehemiah 9:6
Matthew 25:31 Matthew 26:53

TEaching Tips

5. Sing “Names of God” Songs

Discuss the meanings in the song “El Shaddai” before singing it.

El Shaddai, El Shaddai, El Elyon na Adonai
Age to age you’re still the same
By the power of the name
El Shaddai, El Shaddai, Erkamka na Adonai
We will praise and lift you high, El Shaddai
Through your love and through the ram
You saved the son of Abraham
Through the power of your hand
You turned the sea into dry land
To the outcast on her knees
You were the God who really sees
And by your might you set your children free
Through the years you made it clear
That the time of Christ was near,
Though the people couldn’t see
What Messiah ought to be.
Though Your Word contained the plan,
They just could not understand:
Your most awesome work was done
Through the frailty of Your Son.

(“na” means “oh”; “Erkamka” means “We will love you”)
